Keira Knightley Set To Star In My Fair Lady

Myfairlady LogoIt looks like another stage production is making its way onto the silver screen (again). We get news today that Keira Knightley will star in My Fair Lady. The following scoop was made available to us thanks to our good friends at comingsoon:

Columbia Pictures has entered into an agreement with CBS Films to create a new motion picture of the Lerner and Loewe classic musical “My Fair Lady,” to be produced by Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. CBS Films will be actively involved in the development of the new film. Keira Knightley is reportedly in talks to star.

The new film will use the original songs of the much-loved Broadway show, and will not alter its 1912 setting, but Kenworthy and Mackintosh intend where possible to shoot the film on location in the original London settings of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street, and Ascot racecourse.

I haven’t been much of a supporter of live theatre. I have nothing against it, and hope to see quite a few more productions before I die, but I am unfamiliar with most.

I very much enjoyed the most recent screen incarnation of the Producers and hope to see something as enjoyable from this production. I like films that take place in the early 1900’s it was a time of great change and people still dressed up just to get milk. We will be sure to follow news of this production and will have pictures of Keira in period garb as soon as humanly possible!

  1. Hey everybody, don’t forget this is a 2-person show. I’m sure Kiera will do fine, but it’s ‘enry ‘iggins that makes the chemistry work.

You can go down the list of who would make a good uptight Englishmen all you want, but there’s only ONE answer:

Hugh Laurie! If this Engllishman can act good enough to make you think he’s a cranky, self-absorbed American, how good do you think he’d be as a…
    cranky, self-absorbed Englishman???

  2. I guess it’ll be interesting to see if Kiera can sing. Personally, I don’t think this movie really needs to be made again, but let’s see what comes of it.

I’m a little tired of Kiera who can’t seem to keep her lips together. It drives me crazy watching her sometimes…her mouth is always hanging open just a little bit! It’s like Corey Haim from the 80s all over again.

  3. I don’t think a new version of this movie will have much to offer that the old one doesn’t. Maybe real settings instead of sets? Furthermore, while KK can act, I don’t know if she can sing, and this part requires a Julie Andrews kind of range (she played the role originally on stage.). I usually don’t mind a good remake, but like Campea, I feel like it should have something new to offer, and this won’t. Plus I think enough people are familiar with the old one–the people who are the target audience for a musical would be, at least.
