Elite Squad Gets Simultaneous Release

We have an update for the U.S. distribution of Elite Squad, it appears that it will be launched in theaters and VOD simultaneously for your convenience! We get wind of this news thanks to THR:
“Elite Squad,” the first feature to be produced by the Weinstein Co. and Costantini Films’ Latin Film Fund, won’t be released theatrically in the U.S. by the Weinsteins. Instead, Jose Padilha’s Brazillian drug drama, which won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, will be released simultaneously in theaters and on VOD through IFC Films, one of several day-and-date releases IFC is planning from other indie distributors.
The move is quite unusual given that “Squad” is one of the most acclaimed films of the year, the Weinsteins have shepherded many successful foreign film releases since their Miramax days and “Squad” was promoted by the Weinstein Co. when it made its North American premiere two months ago at the Tribeca Film Festival. The company launched Third Rail Releasing in February to handle its lower-budget specialty films, through which it will distribute Julian Schnabel’s docu “Lou Reed’s Berlin” next month.
I have heard cool things about this film and I am anxious to check it out. It’ s odd that the Weinstein Co. dropped this picture, but I’ m excited for the release on Video On Demand. VOD release means that it will be much more convenient for those of us that don’t live in a “limited release” city.
I would like to see more simultaneous launching of films on the VOD format. That way those who hate the theatre are able to join in on water cooler discussion monday morning like everyone else – because they saw the film at home.

All I can say about this film is that it’s like City of God but this time it’s from the policeman’s POV.
I just saw this movie the other day at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Sound Designer Dan has nailed – City of God from the police perspective. I am sure you will be very impressed with it, Doug.
‘Simultaneous release’.
As the cinema owners/operators would say, ‘Them’s fighin’ words!’
It’s time for them to get real and see what’s coming: simultaneous releases for almost all product. I repeat a mantra about Those Who Make The Product: they don’t care how they make their money, in cinemas, in VOD, by mental-synaptic-dump. It’s all the same colour to them.
The ones who will be panicking are those who SHOW the films. Here comes the future, boys. Serves you right for fucking up exhibition so badly over the past thirty years. Asshats.
I will watch this on VOD jsut for the pure support of releasing something in this format. I fucking love this idea and want to see more of it. The only way that can happen is if studios see a fedeuciary benefit from doing so, so I’ll cue that bad boy up no problem!
could the reason be that a pirated dvd quality version is already avaliable on the intertubes?
