It appears that Beverly Hills Cop 4 may be PG-13. We get the scoop from our friends at MTV:
“We’re trying to revitalize the franchise. He was one of my favorite movie characters of all-time, Axel Foley, by far the coolest movie character,” he said. “It’s an honor to be able to direct another ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ film.” Each of the previous three “Cop” movies were rated R, and Murphy’s machine gun mouth, which spewed expletive after expletive in those days, was as much a part of the character as anything else. Surely, his swearing wouldn’t be lost in the translation?Maybe. When asked what is biggest challenge would be, Ratner seemed to indicate that his new film would be geared towards a very PG audience. “10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”
Why on earth would you bother to make a Beverly Hills Cop film that is rated PG-13. Now they are not only giving us a film that we do not want, they are taking an adult franchise and pacifying it for 10 - 12 year olds? This really is unbelievable. Eddie Murphy is going to let the studios pimp him out as a PG-13 fool in a shitty film that will destroy one of the characters that launched his career? Yep.
I love reading all the liquid shit that is pouring forth from Ratner’s mouth. How the hell can this fucktard sleep knowing that he’s going to make a Beverly Hills Cop 4 film with a PG rating? How he defends this decision and makes it sound noble for “the kids of today” is laughable. If he came out and said “we want to make money, and you idiots love shit movies” I would at least respect his honesty. Now he just comes off as a shitty storyteller, and a liar.
I am sure both Murphy and Ratner are going to have a payday that is bigger than any I could ever hope for, and I hope it’s worth it - because it’ s costing them the respect of their peers.
To quote the funny Eddie Murphy (now deceased) Fuck you Eddie, I want half.

“i am american women now Eddieeeee”
This pisses me off behond words. It was bad enough that Die Hard was neutered.
This takes the cake. I was so excited to hear that we may get funny Eddie back. Looks like once again the almighty dollar wins once again.
Fuck this sucks :(

So it’s a complete contradiction to what Eddie Murphy said about wanting to get back to the edginess of the character. The more i’ve thought about it though, the reason Axel was a cocky, smart ass was largely due to his youth. It probably would be ridiculous to see the Eddie Murphy of today try and do that.
But Mr Ratner; let me tell you about the youth of today. They are sadistic, evil little bastards who, as I type, are driving at top speed on a Liberty City pavement, knocking rows of pedestrians down like bowling pins in ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’ (and quite right too). They want violence and swearing and R rated stuff. You’re kidding yourself if you think otherwise and worse yet, you’ll end up making a film nobody wants to see.

Eddie is catering to the lowest common denominator. No one will be denied access to this movie therefore broadening how wide of an audience you can get in the seats.
The real problem is that Eddie is not a draw anymore. His movies all fail. Even Tropic Thunder is using Murphy movies as gag fodder now.
The only people this could have appealed to are those wanting to see Eddie be Axl again. Even an older Axl. And with a PG13 rating we know he wont really be Axl.

So it’s OK for Ratner to see R rated material when he was a child, but R rated material for today’s kids is a no-no?
Seems kind of hypocritical.
I’ll probably see this movie regardless (as I’m a big BHC fan) but I have very little hope for this movie.
Do kids even like Eddie Murphy today? Oh wait, Norbit. Never mind.

Well we all know he’s not doing it for the kids, he’s doing it so the movie will be more financially successful (PG-13 vs R).
He just sounds like a complete idiot when giving that quote about the memories of children.

Um… am I the only person who sees “PG” in the quote? No mention of PG-13.
You’re complaining about a PG-13 movie, but they actually said “PG”….

It’s Live Free or Die Hard all over again. Making a rated R film PG-13 will just DESTROY it. It’ll be so hilarious. Everytime Foley swears, it’ll be edited (”What the f (udge) is that?”) since three months later, they’ll release an unrated version. Whoop de fucking do. PG-13 can suck shit.
