Star Trek Composer Alexander Courage Passes On

CourageWe are sad to announce that composer Alexander Courage has passed on at the age of 88. We get the following scoop from our friends at trekmovie:

Alexander Courage, who wrote the original Star Trek title theme as well as the scores for numerous television shows and movies, died May 15 in Pacific Palisades, California at the age of 88. The Emmy winning and Oscar-nominated composer had over 90 film and television credits and at least one other TV theme (Judd for the Defense), but he was best known for the exotic, bongo-driven siren song he wrote for the original Star Trek TV series.

The Star Trek TV theme is an amazing piece of work. It is instantly recognizable and is among the greatest of themes. In high school, I had the privilege of seeing the Canadian military band perform the song live, and it was rad. At 88, Alex had a good run, but it’s always sad to see people exit this plane. Our condolences go out to his friends and family.

This is really sad, he created a great theme for the series, and his opening fanfare for the show has always been used every single Star Trek movie with the only exception being the first.

Him, and Jerry Goldsmith were very good friends, and they did some great work for Star Trek.

    Alexander Courage will be missed.

Thanks for posting this Doug. Courage’s passing is sad indeed.

His ST – Enterprise fanfare gives me goosebumps to this day.

You can say what you like about the actual film but he did an awesome score for Superman IV which he lived just long enough to see finally unearthed and get a full score release. I urge all music lovers to track it down.
