Robert Downey Jr Approached to play Hugh Hefner

Posted by on 24. 05. 2008in News Chat

In a really huge stretch of his acting ability, Robert Downey Jr, who just nailed the role of millionaire playboy Tony Stark has been approached to play the lead in a biopic of Hugh Hefner… THE millionaire playboy.

EISB.net says:

HEF has given his blessing for Downey Jr. to bring his story to the big screen.

He may have given his blessing, but with no script and no director it sounds like this project may be going nowhere fast.

So as good an idea as this sounds, it just might be bad timing. Logically he isn’t going to throw his stones in with this deal since Ironman 2 is right around the corner (which I am sure he wouldn’t risk) and not much has been developed in this yet.

Unlike a regular script based on fiction this one is going to have to have Hef’s seal of approval, which adds one more stage this will have to pass through before coming to light.

I like the idea, really I do. But I am not all that optimistic we will see this happen until well after Ironman2. He does look sharp in a smoking jacket, and he is a fine actor. So if and when this does happen, I am in.

After Iron Man, I would watch this guy in anything.

  2. Kristina says:

If Hef thinks you are cool enough to play him, then it’s official. You are the shit.

  3. I think he could really pull off the role, but would it really be all that good of a movie anyway? I can’t imagine the plot being little more than soft-core porn. Sex, drugs, money and how a man was trying to achieve success. It’s all been done.

  4. Freddy J says:

    lol @ Kristina

    I concur.

  5. Troy says:

I agree he’d be great…BUT…complete Iron Man 2 first, and keep the Hef biopic artistic and low (er) budget between 30-50m a la Chaplin. RD Jr deserved more praise for that role. Of course, he was in the press for the wrong reasons then. It seems my memory just prodded me with him in Less than Zero……….not many actors have the bravery to do that…….That’s it RD Jr for Prez!!!!!

  6. Mozzerino says:

I will watch anything if Downey stars in it.
This however is just a unsubstantiated rumor that only came about because Downey played a very cool playboy-millionaire in IRON MAN.
    Nothing to see here.

  7. Rodney says:

Actually Mozzerino, If you read the article you would have seen that this is not rumour.

Hef himself has made the fist step in approaching Downey giving him approval for the role. Downey likes the idea but wont commit without a script or director attached.

No one said he WOULD do the role, just that Hef gave his nod, and Downey was very interested in it. What happens next is still up in the air.

  8. Mr.Death says:

He would be a very goof Hugh Hefner, although maybe Stan Lee could do a better job ;-)

  9. Dragonslayer says:

RD Jr. will take over the world!!!!!!

(and so will motion capture animation)

  10. dvdsforcheap.net, I totally agree…..!

  11. bigsampson says:

man if u dont know cruise the net about stories of hefner….i scene pics of him with like 4 -7 girls boning….i also heard he has gotten head from a dude…but he said it was the 70′s and people used drugs and experimented……well i gave taken drugs…and never experimented…but hell it aint the 70′s so hahaha probly be good flick

  12. Mozzerino says:

Actually Rodney, Hef giving his approval doesn’t mean shit. The old geezer would probably endorse Ashton Kutcher for the part, if he would be asked.

In what way did Downey express his interest? Got any soundbites? Or excerpts from an interview? As long as I don’t hear it from his own mouth, I don’t believe anything.
If you however have a source, feel free to post it and I will apologize happily.

  13. Rodney says:

I suppose the article I referenced isn’t enough for you? Eisb.net has quoted the Chigago Sun Times saying that Hef himself signed off on the approval.

However it is just the approval as nothing else has been established yet. Downey says he is very interested but wont sign until he says there is a script and director.

All we have so far is Hef backing the idea and Downey being approached.

  14. Mozzerino says:

Both the Eisb.net-article and the Chicago Sun-Times don’t offer any quote from Downey himself and as long as he hasn’t been asked directly and we can quote the man himself, this is all pure speculation.
This whole “being approached” business doesn’t mean anything as far as I’m concerned.

  15. Rodney says:

90% of what movie news sites and newspapers report are out of the mouths of publicists and managers. So it doesnt come from Downey’s mouth and you dismiss it as false?

Why do you read these sites then? Most of what we write would be dismissed if that is how you want to approach it.

    Quoted:
“Downey’s publicists feel the same, “A representative for the actor said he’s interested in the Hefner project but is unlikely to commit to it until a script is done and a director is named,”

Downey’s rep said he was interested. That’s not good enough for you?

  16. Mozzerino says:

Downey’s rep saying he was interested is typical Hollywood bla-bla and doesn’t mean anything (considered somebody actually said it and some journalist didn’t make it up completely which I think is highly likely).

I didn’t say that it was false. I did say that as this point this is nothing but unsubstantiated gossip. Which is fine. I didn’t want to knock on your journalistic integrity or whatever Rodney, everything’s cool.
I just like a bit of fact in my reports because if I would fantasize about all casting rumors coming from overenthusiastic publicists, I wouldn’t have time to eat or sleep.
