More DragonBall Movie Images Online
Earlier this week we posted an image from a Japanese magazine giving us our first look at Goku from the Dragonball Movie.

Dbthemovie.com has posted a new scan from Japanese magazine Weekly Young Jump which includes a better version of the previous photo of Justin Chatwin as Goku, as well as another photo of Goku and a first look at Emmy Rossum as Bulma
The source website shows a scanned image from another Asian magazine, but I have to say that this actor looks more like Goku in the above images. I really have no clue who Justin Chatwin is. A quick look on IMDB reveals that he was in an episode of Smallville that I have watched as well as a role in Baby Geniuses 2: Superbabies. Which I did not see.
Emmy Rossum however, is just CRAMMED with serious talent and scads of appeal. And this picture just makes her look as cute as ever. If anything would make me want to watch a Dragonball movie (notice I didnt say Dragonball Z movie) then it would be her.
Does this aleviate some of the concerns voiced in the comments of the previous post, or do you still think he doesn’t look like Goku??

he played tom cruise’s son in war of the worlds and was the main character in The Invisible, where he’s almost beaten to death and his spirit comes back to make a girl find him…

I said it earlier, I’ll say it again. I really like that this is ending up being an interpretation rather than a carbon copy of the series. I would rather a modern take. I do like Emmy as Bulma. She looks like she’s got that cocky attitude that Bulma radiates. That, and she’s damn cute.
I liked Chatwin in War of the Worlds, as dumb as his character may have been. I also really like that Goku’s hair isn’t over exaggerated into large, ridiculous spikes. It’d just look silly on someone in real life if it was done in the exact way Goku’s hair is in the show.
Maybe I’ve been a fan for so long I feel like doing it exactly like the show may screw it up, so doing it as an original interpretation allows the writers to work with more, and gives it a fresh take on a story us fans have seen a million times over. Plus, if it’s an original interpretation, there’s less room to screw up, right?

I can’t even begin to express how SAD I am that Emmy Rossum, who I adored in Phantom of the Opera, has to resort to doing shit like this.

I am a fan of the animated series. However, I am NOT a purist.
I do recognize the need to adapt the Dragon Ball universe. However, I think that the producers are headed in the wrong direction. I would have preferred to have a Dragon Ball Z movie. The stories are much stronger and much more appealing to American audiences (the fighting, special effects potential, the epic scale, etc.)
But since they are starting with the original “Dragon Ball” they really should start with the origin story. It is a fantastic story to tell. About how a baby, born to kill and take over planets for an evil war lord (Frieza), hit his head on a rock and became good-hearted and his quest with Bulma to find the seven Dragon Balls, and about all the people he meets (and fights) along the way.

@Eanetdude:
I think that since they’re going to go into three movies, the whole Saiyan/Freeza storyline will be brought to light in the third movie perhaps, ending with Goku becoming a Super Saiyan, but the film would certainly show the Saiyan race and Bardock in a flashback.
I think the reason they’re not starting with a child is that it just might be too difficult to do.

I’m not looking forward to this movie even though I am a big fan of the series.
They should call this Dragonball Z since it’s taking place when Goku is an Adult I assume, and that’s if they are going to do the Saiyan, and Freeza sagas.

I bet the producers of this movie have really started to sweat after SPEED RACER tanked big time at the box office.
This will be the SPEED RACER of 2009, mark my words boys!
Btw, what have they done to the lovely Emy Rossum? I actually didn’t recognize her, she looks nothing like her real self (which is not a good thing).

The pics are starting to look promising and i do kinda hope that they do a good job with this, but i’m not holding my breath. maybe when they realese a trailer i will get some hope that this will actually be half-decent

@Kristina maybe she read the script and it looked really promising so she wanted to do it (Emmy Rossum)

would it of really been that terrible to cast an asian guy in the role?
May 16th, 2008
Torim
yes, it would have been TERRIBLE to have an asian guy play as the main character. this movie is American Hollywood based, the asian people tried their hand at a live action…and they failed miserably

Chatwin was also in The Chumscrubber. Check that movie out, I love it.

@miles “would it of really been that terrible to cast an asian guy in the role?”
And is it so bad that they did not?
@Torim “the asian people tried their hand at a live action…and they failed miserably”
Yes, I can see how Chan, Fat, and Li would agree with you. Such failures.

I actually like this picture a fair bit. It gives me hope.

The only reason they are calling this movie Dragon Ball is because it in fact sucks Dragon Balls. This is either going to go one of two ways. It will either play out like the first Mortal Kombat or it will play out like D.O.A, truly this is gonna be a movie that should not have been made. Too many character, to much story, too much over-the-top dramatization that only the most hardcore, simple minded and delilliusional fan would go see.

@Rodney i meant that since this is an American based movie an Asian dude wouldn’t fit with a cast of Caucasian people, ive also seen a live action Japanese dragonball movie…(bits and pieces) and it is the worst garbage i have ever seen, I can see how that could be misinterpreted as me bashing asian actors but that wasn’t what was i was going for.

Man, some people just have to persuade themselves a hundred times these pictures look great just because the cast is predominantly white. No wonder places with a white population have still not yet conformed to the wave of boycotts sweeping all over the world.
And BTW, those who are spreading anti-Asian comments to promote the sense of caucasian superiority can just imagine how terrific a movie the Chinese and Japanese could have made if they had the kind of budget Hollywood movies get.

@ rodney and torim:
personally i do not think that goku is a very north american sounding name.
the cartoon character is an asian dude, why do we have to turn him into a white guy for this movie? i don’t get it. people should be able to accept an asian guy playing an asian character.
May 20th, 2008
Rodney
Miles, the character is not asian. He is described as a monkey boy because he has a tail.
He is an alien from a race called Saiyans.
@Kracken, the pictures look good because I can see the similarity in the characters and Emmy is so cute. Nothing to do with being white.
And no one said it was BETTER that they are white. No superiority routine here. Just that they thought the pictures looked good.

Kracken
Alright Rodney, I can see that you think any guy makes a great Goku as long as he’s white, then
May 20th, 2008
Rodney
Kracken, why are you so hung up on assuming that we said he HAD to be white? I never said he had to be white. No more than he had to be asian.
Why are you trying to make this a race thing?? He looks like Goku. Get over it.
May 20th, 2008
Kracken
I really like to know what standards those who think this guy looks like Goku take. At least an overwhelming majority of the world’s population doesn’t think so.
May 20th, 2008
Rodney
Well Kracken since you are all fingers and no solutions, you write it.
Who DOES look like Goku. I have yet to meet a person who does look like this cartoon character. And I have been to a LOT of conventions where this is a popular cosplay.

reading the posts…i was beginning not to like Kracken…but i do believe this should be an asian production or at least stephen chow at the directors chair….in my opinion asian cinema is in a lot of ways superior besides the budget….if this was make in hong kong or japan with a hollywood budget it would be incredible…
