It looks like the legendary “on the fly” engineer MacGyver may be getting his own film. We get this surprising news from Gizmodo via slashfilm:
Today at Maker Faire 2008, MacGyver creator (and real life inspiration) Lee David Zlotoff announced he has a big budget MacGyver movie in the planning stages.
Zlotoff mentioned he somehow ended up with the movie rights years ago (extremely uncommon), giving him full control over the film. While few specifics were mentioned, and no formal announcement has been made, its extremely promising that the man with the power to make the film is getting the ball rolling.
If they have Richard Dean Anderson reprise his role as MacGyver, I will be interested in this project. I see no reason to hire someone else when the man still looks the same. I think he is an immortal, and for that reason alone - he deserves the gig.
I never got into the television program as a kid, but I know many people were fans of the show, and many MacGyver jokes continue to be thrown around to this day. In Half Baked there was even a gag about “MacGyver” bong smiths that could make a pipe out of the most obscure objects.
in this upcoming picture maybe MacGyver can get captured in Afghanistan by terrorists, and use his know-how to build a robot escape suit. That would make for an excellent film!
Would you guys welcome a MacGyver film, or has the opportunity passed?

This is undoubtedly the best news ever. Well, close anyway. I just started watching Stargate SG-1 yesterday and while watching was wondering what RDA was up to these days… I think he should definitely come back as Macgyver!

*waits for John to chime in about how the TV actor doesn’t have to play a character in the movie
I’m indifferent for now. I like MacGyver but after seeing the Knight Rider TV movie and all the TV show - movie remakes I don’t have my hopes too high.

The difference between Bionic Woman, it’s series, Knight Rider the movie, and upcoming series, is that they are all done by different people, and star different people.
This is the same guy who did the series, and it’s starring (hopefully) the same guy who played MacGyver. If someone didn’t like it, then they would know that it just didn’t live up to the reputation of the series. If someone else were to do it, then everyone would be like, “you should’ve had the original crew doing it.”

You have got to be kidding me just today I was thinking about how MacGyver would translate into a cinematic adaptation. I was at my local video store looking at the different seasons of the show and thinking about. What a remake would look like who would they cast as MacGyver? I just hope that this film works as a continuation of the television series and RDA reprises the role.

A new movie would be absoulutly awesome!!!! Just make sure that MacGyver isn’t like all corny and stuff and that this movie doesn’t destroy all the others like the new indiana jones one. Oh, and people are now into guys who are hard-to-get and hawt so don’t make him all mushy and falling for gurls every second. I think thats what used to make him so popular- on being cool, not a sleeper- arounder with different woman every show. This movie will work if you do it right. You can change his wardrobe, though.

I can not believe what I am reading. I mean I have known about this for quite some time now but I am sooo stoked! I have got to be in the top five percent of biggest fans! I mean my room is covered in his works! I can not wait for this to come back because I have missed real television shows….there is not a lot on now a days that live up to this quality. To say in the least MacGyver was revolutionary for its time and has got to be the greatest show ever created. Richard Dean Anderson is a GOD! Bring on the flick!
