First Indy 4 Review/New Production Pics

We have our first review for Indiana Jones 4 coming out of the woodwork this morning along with additional set pictures. We get this glorious scoop thanks to Peter over at slashfilm:

Someone has seen Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Jeff Wells has the scoop from someone on the Crystal Skull team over in Spielberg-land (read: I’m not sure how much you can believe this over-the-top positive report), and here are the highlights:

* “The best of the Indy sequels.”
* “The film has the strongest supporting cast of the sequels.”
* “There are many breakneck set pieces, with a protracted jungle chase being particularly memorable. As well as being evocative of the truck chase from the first movie.”
* “…an ending that any longtime diehard fan of the films could only dream about. Expect a particularly resounding reaction in the theater.”

You can read the full report on Hollywood-Elsewhere.

As Peter has already suggested, this news should be taken with a grain of salt. The review has originated from someone involved in the project and is as biased as you can get. That being said, It’s always good to hear positive news about a project you are looking forward to (even if it’s fake). I am afraid to get too excited about this project for fear of letdown, but I want an awesome Indy film as much as anyone, and would be delighted to the nth degree if they make another fantastic picture for the legendary character.

I like the new pictures, the skull temple looks rad and Kate Blanchett looks outstanding as a Nazi with bangs. The pictures that have been coming out are probably what has been stoking the fires of my interest more than anything. So far I have been very happy with the images coming down the pipe; they have really stoked my curiosity about the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. I am looking forward to the dungeon crawl, and hidden secret evil! More picture are available at slashfilm - be sure to check out the rest (possible spoilers).

First two pics are great. Third is clearly a cg backdrop that is a little ropey. You can tell that shot is them against a greenscreen.

  2. I’ve already spoiled myself so much from seeing all the pics and the plot outlines leaked from toy promos and such, that I’ve decided to skip seeing the 2nd trailer.

As for the review, it is probably to be easily dismissed to be sure….just as easily dismissed as all the naysayers reporting negative “insider” reactions from “someone who knew someone who helped to give a ride to Spielberg’s maid one time……”

I am really getting jazzed for this film, from everything I’ve seen. An awesome cast and some wild set pieces that I don’t dare spoil here.

And, yes, Cate looks so badass in this. I think she will make one of the best villains of the series.

    Is May 22nd here yet?!?

  3. As far as the “ending that any longtime diehard fan of the films could only dream about” goes, I predict a Sean Connery cameo.

Mostly because he has said a bazillion times there wasnt enough money in the world to get him on set (he’s retired) but its just the kind of thing he would do just for shits and giggles (See Robin Hood: Prince of Theives)

    Just sayin.

WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE FAKE LOOKING CGI BACKGROUNDS IN THIS MOVIE?!?!? WTF?!? The other movies didn’t have this problem, why are they having shit looking crap in this one???

    A few points…

Go back and watch the trilogy: there are a ton of matte effects employed, which are nowhere near as seamless as the worst CGI. I don’t consider that a bad thing btw…it’s part of the charm of these films capturing that old movie serial look and feel.

Now, the beards mention only using the bare minimum if CGI in this film:

“”Steven Spielberg estimated during production that 30% of the visual effects would be CGI, but mostly for elements such as backdrops and rotoscope removal of the visible safety wires during stunt sequences. Apparently, the finished film will contain only “a couple of hundred” effects shots, compared to Michael Bay’s Transformers which featured almost 650 effects shots or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 which featured almost 1,000 effects shots.”

Also, don’t worry about how shots look until the film is actually playing in your local multiplex in late May, as early trailers and pics aren’t always indicative of the final polished product.

I find it funny that some of the shots in the teaser trailer that people called horrible CGI were actually practical all the way.

  6. This movie will just be great. End of story.

Cate is actually a Commie with bangs. No Nazis this time.

    @ James

I NEVER had a visual problem with the matte effects in the earlier Indiana Jones films being fake looking or distracting.

These on the other hand, look phony as shit. The cliff chase in the trailer looks like BAD CGI, the shot in the trailer of Kate Winslet driving the car looks like bad blue-screen, and this latest picture looks like bad blue-screen.

  9. nbakid2000

I can’t believe I just said Kate Winslet, I meant Cate Blanchett. Been watching “Extras” a little too much lately…

  10. Cate looks like the T-1000 in that last pic.

As for this movie, I just want to see the damn thing already. I’m not a huge fan of this franchise, truth be told. I only just recently watched Raiders for the first time all the way through, and while it was a good movie, it wasn’t a life-altering experience like it was for some of these fanatics that have magically come out of the woodwork. If this one sucks, it won’t bug me too much, but I hope for the rest of you that this movie is as good as this plant-ish review makes it out to be.

  11. If theres an ending fans could only ever dream of - its blatantly that Sean Connery will cameo at the end…

  12. chris (the real one)

i dont know, but i never was in love with the series. the movies are entertaining enough but like kristina said, im not really that excited about this. its weird but none of these pics look interesting.

  13. I’m glad the spoilers aren’t readily available because i’m going out of my mind waiting for this thing. I really believe this could be great.

  14. nbakid2000

Yeah I feel exactly the same way. The wait for this thing is exhausting and I just wanna know if it sucks or not. Just show it to us already.

My kid and I were watching TV a week ago and there was an Indy TV spot to which both of us exclaimed “I can’t wait!” Indy was second only to Star Wars growing up. This new installment has me bouncing up and down inside even though I’m trying not to get my expectations up too high. The fact that my kid is just as excited makes it all the more fun.
