AdamyBeastie Boy Adam Yauch is set to bring Gunnin’ for That No. 1 Spot to the silver screen. We get wind of the music star’s movie project from the fabled caves of yahoo:

Some of college basketball’s brightest stars, including Kansas State’s Michael Beasley and UCLA’s Kevin Love, are featured in Beastie Boy Adam Yauch’s new documentary, “Gunnin’ for That No. 1 Spot.”

Yauch took his camera to Harlem’s famed Rucker Park, made famous by streetballers, in September 2006 to document some of the nation’s top high school talent, who were playing in an event there. Yauch said he was struck by how the players — who also included Jerryd Bayless of Arizona, Donte Green of Syracuse and Kyle Singler of Duke — could act like kids one minute, yet live in such an adult world.

I am not a sports enthusiast so I cannot say that I am excited to see this picture. For fans of Basketball however, this film sounds like a fantastic idea. This film will be interesting enough upon release, but years from now, if a few of these players grow up to be superstars – it will be a welcome window into the evolution of the beloved athletes.

Adam Yauch has done some videos for The Beastie Boys and a short comedy film, but this appears to be his first feature length documentary. I am wondering if this project represents a growing interest in film and the start of a second career for Mr. Yauch. When this guy moonlights – he doesn’t fuck around. This film is set for wide release June 27 and I am interested in seeing how successful it is upon release, and 10 years down the road.
