No Plans For Batman 3 Yet

Bale-Batman-3With the second of the current Batman flicks rapidly approaching (The Dark Knight), speculation is already staring to run wild about Batman 3. Who will be in it, who will the villains be, will the Joker be back with another actor… yadda yadda yadda. There’s only one catch, neither Christopher Nolan or Christian Bale are currently locked in for a possible third film yet. The good folks over at RopeofSilicon give us this following excerpt from an interview with the duo:

EW: So do you think there will be a part 3 of Batman?

Bale: Um, look, let’s wait and see…

EW: Or, I guess it’d be part 7.

Bale: No, no, no, no, no. [Smiling] Part 3 is what I’d consider it, yeah, I don’t say part 7. Batman begins — that was the beginning there, with all due respect to the others. We are re-creating this. You know, obviously the decision is out of my hands. I would, knowing the Dark Knight story, I would like very much to complete a trilogy. And I think that knowing the story of The Dark Knight, it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third. Now, the question would be: Is Chris going to be doing it? Because to me I find it tricky to imagine working on it without it being a collaboration with Chris.

EW: Will there be another Batman movie?

Nolan: I have no clue

In today’s film market place you can’t blame a studio for not rushing ahead with future sequels until they see how the market is shaking out and how their current project will fair in theaters. So at this point any speculations or rumors you hear about the third Batman flick is just that… speculation and rumors. The project has not been green lit nor are any plans officially on the books.

Having said that, you’d have to be blind deaf and dumb to not know that WILL eventual be a third part to this series. One way or the other, WB will get a third film in the works, and you can bet your ass Christian Bale will be back as the Bat…. the only question is if Nolan will be back to direct. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Nolan WON’T be back to direct a thrid film… I’m just saying I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t. Directors get bored, and studios aren’t afraid to switch up directors in a franchise (it worked pretty well for Star Wars and Harry Potter so far)

  1. Batman 3
the vilians of this film should be the penguin, scarecrow and maybe the punisher should come within the film to huntdown catwomen now theres. a story to look forward too. plus the pengiun should be played by bob hoskins and all the rest of the characters should be played by each 20th century actors/actresses in there own film. peguins plot:- penguin should have a carnival in gotherm city park, this will become known to the public that everybody should come pay a visit to the freaks and clowns (it should also be said in the joker came from the carnival when he was a boy; and his father was the pengin). this knowing that the joker in (the dark knight) was captured should be on death row, the penguin’s fury rises to come with a plan to break the joker out of prison. which is why his carnival is at goterm city, the penguin should also be the ringleader. and also the joker needs to be played by another actor simular to heath ledger, james franco which i think with a little bit more make up could become the joker with a little more scares from prison aswel.

  3. Id love to see a third one come out, something to finish the story off. Iv seen both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, they were brilliant. But i think one more at least should be made to finish off the series. It would be hard, even impossible, to ever replace Haeth Ledger as the Joker since he done so magnificently, so perhaps they should try to, i guess, leave the joker almost completely out of a third movie.

  4. i have an idea that needs to take off and i need everyone to make a buzz about it NOW Batman 3 needs to have the riddler played by jonny depp you all know thats who it need to be to even come close to “The Dark KNight” so i think this needs to be heard christopher nolan needs to hear this thank you all for your help- bill slone

  5. i agree w/ cw05…if your looking for a running mate i’ll be vice. # 3 will happen with the same cast & crew. the only thing that will stop it is an untimely death of one of a top cast / crew member or if TDK bombs. i dont think / hope either will happen. 3 & done will be a good run for them. i would love to see more. what i would really like to see is nolan’s version of mr freeze. he has very sci-fi powers but to see nolan’s real-world take on the character would be cool. his best on screen interpretation was his first apperance on batman the animated series in the 90’s

  6. I’m sorry Jig A Lot but Hook is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. sorry dude. And, yes, me and some of my “buds” have had movie conversations where that movie popped up as a great film. Anyways….. GO JOHN!

And there will definitely be a 3rd Batman. I distinctly remember reading something a while back about Nolan talkin about how he was already contemplating how the penguin and robin would work in a future film, so…… yea. He’s got his eyes on the prize. I think he just wants people to focus on the upcoming movie and not be thinkin about the one afterwards and what if by him telling people that he was gonna do a third and that the Joker WAS gonna be it he’d be spoiling the Dark Knight. He’s keepin his mouth shut for a good reason.

  7. If they think that a 3rd is in any doubt then i would speculate that two face comes in long before the last scene and his character arc finished off or fairly resolved. Personally I think a third is as certain as death and taxes.

  8. If they can make Indiana Jones 4 after so many years you can bet that they will do a Batman 3 or I guess 7. I agree with John and say that Christain Bale will return for the next Batman and I also think that Christopher Nolan will return as the director. I think Nolan likes working with Bale and thats why he was in The Prestige.

Why is everyone shitting all over The Terminal? It was a decent movie and alot better then most of the crap that comes out. Not oscar worthy or anything but I would give it a strong 8 out of 10.

  9. Hey Jig A Lot

Once again, you’re changing topics. What exactly Spielberg, the best director in history, has to do with Spider-Man 3 is beyond me.

You started a conversation about Raimi being free from blame for the failure of Spider-Man 3. I countered your arguement, and out of nowhere you started talking about Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

Secondly, I have repeatedly said Amistad is Spileberg’s BEST film. One of the greatest films in history actually, and easily the most underrated… so I’m not sure which show or website you’ve been reading.

  10. nope. not trying to compare Raimi’s bird dropping with Spielberg’s cow dung. anything Spielberg has done past Schindler’s List/Jurassic Park has
made Raimi look like a piker in terms of doodoo. it has all been an Oscar or $ grab for him since 1994. Stevo is still living off the rep he established with ET & the Indy trilogy, but has not done a damn thing of note since the aforementioned time period. yeah the marketing divisions throw his name around like nobody’s business when it comes time to plug whatever latest unmemorable dross he made. but let let’s keep it real: how many people have watched Munich or The Terminal or AI or over & over & over again like his earlier work?!?
not an awful lot in terms of film discussions either. how many times has Amistad or Hook come up when you & your buds talk movies as compared to say,Jaws?. i rest my case.

  11. I really wouldnt read into this that much. Nolan said the same thing about Batman Begins, that he was concentrating on one story. I think he says these things to keep the focus on one film at a time, which can be daunting in such a complex and dense universe that comes along with comic book adaptations.

If Nolan is talking like this two years from now, or saying that he hasnt thought of a sequel, then Id worry about him not coming back.

Im sure Nolan will bang out a couple more films after TDK and if it as successfull as we think it will be, there is no good reason for him not to come back and helm a third two or three years from now.

  12. Hey Sir Jig A Liot

What does Spielberg and Lucas have to do with Spider-Man 3?!?! I thought we were talking about Spider-Man 3 and your concept that Raimi wasn’t to blame for it? What exactly does Spielberg and Lucas have to do with that?

You’re not REALLY trying to compare Sam Raimi to Steven Speilberg are you?

The point is, EVERYONE, even Spielberg (The Terminal) shits the bed once in a while. With Spider-Men 3, Raimi blew it out his ass.

  13. ok fine,John. Raimi shit the bed since he started making blockbuster big budget movies. Once. if that’s shitting the bed, then your much loved & lauded favourites,Spielberg & Lucas have shit all over the bedroom & the rest of the house. & all over the public. time & time again. & what a foulness it is. that you cannot deny.

  14. eh…are people really worrying? The Dark Knight is going to do incredibly well….no doubt. Nolan will see this and see that he is responsible for making another film after his first 2 successes and will make a 3rd to wrap it up. Nolan being on board will undoubtably bring Bale on board and whoever else they need.

  15. Hey Sir Jig A Lot

The point is, changing directors can work just fine, or it can not work. There are viable examples of both. To rule out changing directors historically isn’t needed, because it CAN work just fine (doesn’t mean it will… just like any movie).

And Spider-Man 3 WAS Raimi’s fault. Deny it all you like. All director’s have to work with studio changes. It’s called adversity. The bad pacing, the bad direction and the bad dialog are all still on Raimi.

Raimi is great, but other directors work through circumstances like this one all the time. Just because his name is “RAIMI” doesn’t give him a pass. He shit the bed, and as the director the fault lands on him.

  16. yeah changing directors during a film series worked for Harry Potter (totally subjective) & Star Wars. except Lucas fucked that up good & proper. didn’t help the X-Men franchise a lick either. also you can cite the Blade trilogy of both elevating it (II) & destroying it(Trinity) a series.

if Nolan doesn’t at least produce a third film if not direct it, it’ll fuck it all up completely. might as well as Joel Schumacher to do the third one.

P.S. i can’t believe some of you are still blaming Raimi for ballsing up Spidey 3! the guy was forced to insert Venom & Gwen after production had already begun by Arad & Marvel. imagine the kind of scrambling you’d have to do after that? the dude had shit locked down after after they gave him full control of Spidey 2. if it ain’t broke..

  17. I’ll be fine if Nolan does not come back in the director’s chair for the third film – it’s like this.

I am of the minority that after two films behind the camera, a director is better supervising the third installment or getting out of dodge altogether. Yes, it would be great if Nolan did come back for a third film as director…but if he does not, I would think by this time, the new Bat-verse, if you will, has been established and nobody can really muck it up. The downside is that they (whoever it would be) would be compared to Nolan’s work and would have to fight that uphill battle.

Let me make it clear. Let’s say The Dark Knight becomes a bigger hit than Begins. We already know it’s basically a Fort Knox WB is all too eager to open. But if it reaches a certian plateau, the film after it must retain the same level of entertainment or raise the bar.

It is also too soon to talk Batman Detective or Brave & The Bold or whatever they will call it (Knightfall? hahha) it is best just too focus on the here and now, and then get development rolling as soon as everyone sees what’s what.

WB will need a third Bat film. They will also need a new Supey film. A go-ahead on a Green Lantern or solo Wonder Woman film….because when JLA rears its ugly head…it’s nearly going to single handedly kill off most chances for DC hero properties.

  18. The ugly undead corpse of the Justice League movie rising from the grave might be a factor in this. I think Nolan is going to be a little peeved if a seperate continuity (and a seperate Batman) are created for the Justice League movie while he’s supposed to make Batman 3 as if nothing’s happened.

On the other hand, it could be just that Nolan has other projects he wants to do for the next few years.

Not to mention, we have (with the exception of Raimi coming back for Spidey 3) a pretty consistent record of directors of comic book movies setting up amazing groundwork in a first and second film and then leaving before they can finish the series. I’m not going to get my hopes up, just enjoy what Nolan is giving us this summer…….

…..OH, WHO AM I KIDDING? FINISH THE TRILOGY MR NOLAN…….please.

  19. Considering the success of Batman Begins, the fact that the Joker is finally being portrayed the way he should be in The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight will be Heath Ledger’s final finished work, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be this summer’s biggest hit. So like you said, one way or another there more than likely will be a third film, and I really hope Nolan will be back to direct. He has done a fantasic job so far.

  20. Ater reading the rest of the interview it seems like Nolan is tongue and cheek with his remarks.

He wants people to focus on The Dark Knight and the fact that he doesnt put the carraige before the horse when making films.

I really dont get a sense one way or another about a sequel from Nolan. It seems like hes eager to see what people think of this one first.

  21. No one has confirmed it yet, and there are certainly no guarantees, but Id be shocked if Nolan and Bale dont come back and “finish the trilogy”.

This could be Bale and Nolan using leverage for a deal because chances are, TDK will make boatloads of money.

This makes me very eager to see how TDK ends. We all know about the arrival of Two Face, but what about the rest of the story? Is this going to be an “Empire Strikes Back” type ending where you feel like the bad guys won?

I really cant wait to see this movie.
