Alex Nolent’s Cyclops Set For Film Adaptation

CyclopsIt looks like another graphic novel is set for adaptation on the silver screen. We learn today that Alex Nolent’s Cyclops is next up to bat, thanks to the professionals at Variety:

Warner Bros. has acquired film rights to the Alexis Nolent graphic novel “Cyclops” and will develop it as a feature vehicle for helmer James Mangold. Set in the near future, the actioner concerns mercenary forces whose soldiers wear Cyclops-like cameras in their helmets and broadcast in real time to both central command and living rooms. One mercenary chosen to lead an elite squad begins to realize he isn’t fighting for freedom and justice as much as for commerce.

“It is an electrifying package you find in the best sci-fi: great action sequences combined with themes that are eminently foreseeable,” Mangold told Daily Variety.

This actually sounds pretty bad ass; near future media warriors is an exciting idea for a film. When thinking about how far our entertainment will go, the sky is the limit when it comes to imagination. We already have reporters following soldiers into battle, helmet cams are actually not that much of a stretch.

The helmet cam makes for some cool film making possibilities, we saw some of this In Aliens. Not only did the soldiers have helmet cams, they also had their vitals up on monitors in mission control. The monitoring of the heart beats on screen was a cool way to communicate a death scene using images other than the murder itself. I look forward to more of these sorts of tricks in this film.

I am curious if any of you have had a chance to read this graphic novel, and if so – what are your thoughts? I am about to read the Watchmen upon recommendation from many of you, and if this one is good; I may add it to the list.
