Wuthering Heights Remake

Wuthering-Heights-PostersIt looks like the classic film Wuthering Heights is up to bat on the remake machine. We get wind of this resurrection thanks to our friends at themovieweb:

A new remake of the classic tale Wuthering Heights has a new director. According to Variety, John Maybury (The Jacket) is set to take the reins of Wuthering Heights. Olivia Hetreed (Girl with a Pearl Earring) wrote the screenplay and casting is currently under way, with plans to start shooting in the fall. Wuthering Heights has been adapted more than a dozen times, the most notable being the 1939 film with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. The story revolves around love and obsessive passion torn through the societal class system.

This film is going to be adapted for the 13th time!?!? Good gracious this thing has more incarnations that the Dhali Llama and I haven’t seen any of them. In 1939 it won the best cinematography oscar and was nominated for seven others. It would be fun to dig up the original film and watch it back to back with the remake, actually you could have a movie day where you watch 6 or more of them.

Shooting for the film begins this fall.

    Heathcliff: Johnny Depp

Catherine: Emmy Rossum, Scarlett Johansson, or Claire Danes

  2. JC says:

Wow I can’t believe it!! this is great!! I read the summary, cuz the novel was just too long, and I loved it!!! I wonder if this remake will cover the whole book, since the old movie covered the first 16 chapters?

  3. Claire says:

Wuthering Heights is wonderful, none of the past adaptations have been that good, so i’ll try and hope for this one. As for potential cast:

Heathcliff: No idea, an unknown would be preferred, it’s going to be a real challenge to find someone with the right looks and talent for the part. Sorry Depp is FAR too old for Heathcliff, he’s older than Heathcliff when he dies in the book, never mind when he’s young with Cathy.

Cathy: Sorry to disagree with other posters but i think there is no need to have an American actress for Cathy, the UK is full to the brim with potentially amazing Cathy’s at the moment: Emily Blunt, Hayley Atwell, Felicity Jones, Gemma Arerton, Ameila Warner, Rebecca Hall and lets not forget queen of the period dramas Keira Knightly.

  4. Rain says:

Heathcliff: Henry Cavill or Matthew MacFadyen I know maybe some of you will say Matthew is older but I jus adore him.
Cathy: I completly agree on Keira Knightly and Emily Blunt between them both I would pick Emily since this will give her a chance to show more of her talent.

  5. Lissi says:

Heathcliff: No idea. He’s ahard one to cast but I agree it should not be Johnny Depp. Despite the age thing he is too small, Heathcliff is supposed to be big and strong.

Catherine: I like Keira Knightly too. Soory, Bridget but neither of those actresses seem to really work for her. They all seem too sweet, or blond.

I hope it does the end because the endis the best part.

  7. Emily says:

Henry Cavill for Heathcliff!!! He would be amazing!

I heard that Natalie Portman has been selected for Cathy……

  8. Julia says:

Christian Bale as Heathcliff! He could pull off the darkness of Heathcliff so well!

  9. Kisane says:

Catherine: not Keira Knightly – too overexposed. Maybe Rebecca Hall,

Heathcliff: Lissi is right – this role needs an actor who can play it mean and rough but display a passion for the woman he loves. The one I’m thinking of maybe a bit too old for this role: Gerard Butler. But please no pretty boys like Depp (though I worship him).

I managed to stumble across quite a few sites such as this, with ideas for the actors/actresses. I actually just finished reading Wuthering Heights, which I selected as a book for my Senior (High School) English class. One of our assignments was to make choices for the actors we thought would be best for some of the characters. I had no idea that a movie was even being considered, so it was pretty interesting to come across all of this, after such an assignment. Here was my list………

    Catherine – Kiera Knightley
Heathcliff – Colin Firth (I know, I know… Too old. But really, he’s just perfect. For a younger actor though, Christian Bale seems like he’d be pretty good.)
    Edgar – Simon Woods
    Isabella – Emmy Rossum
    Hindley – Matthew McFayden
    Younger Cathy – Natalie Portman
    Hareton – Jamie Dornan
    Ellen/Nelly – Brenda Blethlyn
    Lockwood – Adrian Lukis

I’m really not a huge Kiera Knightley fan, but she does seem like she’d play the part fairly well (Pouty, fierce, intense). Personally, I’d love to see Emmy Rossum play the major role as Catherine, but she’s much too innocent. As for everybody else, I know some of the ages don’t quite work together, but with all the miracles they can work with makeup and technology…

  11. Noel says:

well i honestly think that robert downey jr would be awsum for heathcliff despite the age thing because he’s just a wonderful actor in british movies like resoration and his new one sherlock holmes and siince he’s coming back from basically the dead!!!!im almost finished reading wurthering heights and i looove it and would love to see it remade cause i loove british films!………im just proud of reading it and me only bieng in the 8th grade!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Kris says:

Keira Knightly is a prat. All she seems to be able to do is suck her cheeks in an be skinny. It will be an interesting film…

  13. Aquila says:

    I agree.

Keira Knightely would utterly destroy the film.
She would stamp on it, slice it in three and boil it in
the fiery depths of Hades ..
okay, maybe I should tone down on the vehemence,
but I DO hope they don’t screen her.
She has a pretty face, sure!
But personally I think that her acting is nauseating – too smarmy,
    as well as herself.

I think that they should give the leading roles to indi actors and actresses.
I don’t think that I could drive myself to see it if they
cast Heathcliff and Cathy as like… Orlando Bloom or Kiera Knightley.

  14. Alex says:

    Hayden Christiansen for Heathcliff!
    All the way.
He’s definetly dark and brooding enough.

  15. John Touthang says:

I loved this book.I was lost in the story for days, maybe months.

Johnny Depp is a class on his own.But Heathcliff is just not him.I would prefer a new or a rarer face who’s structurally well built and has large expressive eyes, not forgetting intense histrionic skills.
But if it has to be a big actor,in my opinion,Hugh Jackman fits the bill as an older, uncouth Heathcliff.I can’t imagine anyone else doing that role apart from him.
Natalie Portman is an okay choice for Catherine though I wish Kate Winslet in her 20′s could play the part.

I wish the makers of this movie the very best and hope they finally come out with something that’s as chilling and at the same time heart wrenching as the book itself.

  16. Rachel says:

HUGH JACKMAN FOR HEATHCLIFF!!! as for cathy..someone young, naive and spirited. We don’t wanna see another movie with Scarlett Johansson and Jackman, so not her.

  17. Dalena says:

Heathcliff – Hayden Christiansen/ Steven strait/ Jude Law

Cathy- Natlie Portman/ emma watson (shes kidna young but i liked her in harry potter)

  18. annika and elif says:

“Wuthering Heights ” is a amazing book.
My friend and I are doing a project about the book at school. Sometimes its very difficult because the book has so many faces . Its a amazing lovestory , but a times its depressing. Heathcliffs’ passion is frightening. Keep on , your blog is nice.

  19. Judith Spence says:

Just watched 2part remake on ITV. I forgot the passion that was in this movie. The DVD is apparrently out on 7.9.09 and this has got to be a must for me. I like the idea by a previous visitor of watching original and remake back to back. Love the story!!!!!

  20. mutant says:

I know im probably being a bit favourable here, but would Colin Farrel not make quite a good Heathcliff? With the right getup I think he’d pull it off quite well.
As far as someone for Catherine…Im not too sure, but I dont think Keira Knightly would be good, she’s not a great actress imo

  21. rian says:

Ed Westwick is rumored to be playing the role of Heathcliff, read in the February ’10 edition of Cosmopolitan. Good choice, in my opinion.

  22. Sophia says:

keira knightly would not beat juliette binoches performance. i am sure there is someone better out there

  23. Janie says:

Heathcliff: James McAvoy, Ed Westwick or Jude Law.
Ohhh and please no pretty boys….. !

Catherine: Gemma Aterton .. i’m convinced that shes perfect for the role.. but i don’t think she’ll be good with any of the guys i suggested.
She was excellent in Tess of the D’Urbervilles :)

  24. hannah says:

i am very excitied about the whole project the crew is just down the road so i singed up as an extra!! :D :D the part of cathy is being played by the beautiful kara scodelario (effy from skins) and heathcliff i think is an unknown actor, hes very nice he arriived yesterday as i was getting costume fitted!!!

  25. Md. Osman Gani says:

Johnny Depp is perfect for the portrayal of Heathcliff’s charcter. He can bring out the mystic nature of the character as he has always succeeded in playing various anti-heroes.

  26. Kelly says:

This may have been mentioned already, but is a release date? I am super excited about the movie as I love the book. Like many others posted, I had know idea that there have been 13 re-makes.
