That was great. You gotta do more of these video eds. Anyway, I remember having this argument with my ex-girlfriend because we rented Home Alone once and I mentioned to her “don’t worry, they don’t kill the kid because he comes back for HA2″ and she actually got MAD at me like I ruined the film for her. Not everything is a spoiler for heavens sake!

I actually appreciate that you said any bit of information.
A lot of reviews talk about there being a twist at the end of certain movies. They don’t say specifics as to what the twist is but for me that is a spoiler already. I now go into the movie with my enjoyment (or perhaps distaste at the twist) ruined because I am expecting it.

Wow, that was great, you have got to do more of these video editorials, you’ve got quite the knack for it!

Dead fucking on, John.
Right now, I’m avoiding Hellboy 2 spoilers, and I’ve had a easy time of doing it. I can read interviews and set reports without reading spoilers because I go to movie sites that I KNOW will announce spoiler warning beforehand, or put the spoilers in one paragraph so that I can easily scroll past it. Or better yet, put it in invisiotext. Then, I avoid HB 2 forums where I know these spoilers are being discussed right now. It’s not rocket science, people. You gotta be smart. You guys showing the pics of the HB 2 monsters here isn’t a spoiler, but discussing crucial plot details right on the front page without giving warning at all would be a spoiler. DUH.

Everytime someone says DARK Vader I cringe. Grrr..
DARTH Vader has been around pop culture for 30 years now. Darth.
I am glad John did this as recently I was accused of Spoiling Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but showing a Crystal Skull.
I do have to admit. I spoiled Titanic for John. I told him the boat sinks. He has never forgiven me.

I feel like I need like I need to say that I was someone who was “spoiled” by the revelation you guys made about Barbosa being in the second pirates movie.
The spoiler came in listening to your podcast that came out a week or so before the dvd was to be released. I did not know about Barbosa being revealed in the last scene of the film. I had not seen any of the pirates 3 material that showed him in that movie. Even if I had however it would not of told me that he shows up in the VERY END SCENE of Pirates 2.
I am not and was not a slobbering fan of the series or anything but I was looking forward to the dvd relase (I dislike the movie theater due to the distractions of babies crying and wrappers crackling). You guys usually give fair spoiler warnings before hand so this was definately not the norm.
The end of the film was therefore spoiled for me since I knew about the reveal at the end.It was a bit of a bummer. Having said that I wasn’t irate or anything and did not post about this until now. Just felt like I could add a perspective from a casual movie fan.
Love the podcasts and the site guys.

That was a well done video and very informative.
Don’t worry, Rodney, nobody was upset when I revealed about The Dark Knight that ______________________________________________________ at the end, [-).

Zerks beat me to it. I remember the controversy and I remember everyone who had seen the flick said it wasn’t a spoiler. Everyone who hadn’t seen the movie yet agreed it WAS a spoiler. The day before the DVD is released and TMB announced a pretty big surprise ending of a film. Not relevant to the plot, but fits your definition in your video exactly. It affected the enjoyment of the movie for some people. And I don’t think much of the marketing for P3 had been released yet at the time. And Geoffrey Rush was uncredited as well. He’s still WAY down near the end of the page on IMDb.
I guess it doesn’t really matter though since the movie sucked anyway.

this is where the internet is a bit of a mixed blessing in terms of movies.
I read an interview with joe dante today and he had a good point…he said that trying to give people a surprise at the movies is so hard now as every single facet of production is covered in depth so much that its no wonder people wind up disappointed so much as they know so much about the film before they see it that the film doesn;t hold any surprises.
i can really kind of see his point…you think about it back in the day you had a trailer and that was really about it….obviously there were magazines and making of books etc etc but it wasn;t like now where you are sitting at work and you can easily source a spoiler laden review of a script that hasn;t even been shot yet.
and while I asm guilty of ruining many films for myslef by being unable to stay away from spoilers and news and clicking on the link that i was warned not to if i didn;t want to have a film ruined for me..
but on the other hand the internet has been great for independant film and films that without this wonderful outsource may have never gotten the attention they have got so it is a blessing and a curse….
lets face it..the odds of the revelation that darth vader was lukes dad being kept a secret before its release in the internet age would be very slim…..

First on this whole Pirates 3 thing. As soon as the Internet Movie Data Base listed Rush as in the cast, there is no way anything said about Pirates 2 can be considered a spoiler. I already suspected Barbosa would make an appearance in #2 once I saw he was in #3. So the idea that this was a spoiler is rubbish.
On the other hand, I agree with your guidelines for when something isn’t a spoiler anymore, except I would say the DVD should be out for at least a year instead of a few months. Besides that, great video.

John,
That was the BEST explaination and rational behind the much hyped ‘SPOILER’ debate.
Good work.

This is a great piece, but I wish there had been more justification of the second spoiler-defense: promotion. Specifically, trailers that, when see multiple times, clearly give away major plot details or amazing special effects.I understand the purposes of the trailer, but I think they can absolutely affect the movie-watching experience.
“Well then don’t watch them.”
I don’t, but I’m surprised that so many people do so many times. Maybe I just have an above-average memory. Anyway, great vid.
