Harvey Milk (1930-1978) was an activist and politician, and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America; in 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors’ board of San Francisco. The following year, both he and the city’s mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White.
I love the full suit of denim armor worn by Sean Penn in the above picture. He nailed the look of Milk, and this film certainly has all the necessary elements to be fantastic. A tragic story, great cast, denim armor, and the the mysterious man known as Van Sant. No word yet on when we can expect this in theaters, but we will be sure to keep you posted.

I live here in the Castro and my office is just around the corner from the shoot. My boss Rick Stokes is a character in the film (he was the other out Gay candidate in the election Harvey won). Harvey has been one of my heroes since I was a gay teenager in Salt Lake City and his message to come out encouraged my own activism in the 80′s and 90′s. I have been following the shoot with enthusiasm and great interest. Tonight they will re-enact the famous candlelight march that filled the streets of SF the night he was murdered.

It’s been so cool to see the neighborhood filled with vintage cars, the shop windows and signage changed to period detail and the extras in 70′s garb walking around. Even spotted Van Sant and Penn on my way to lunch the other day.

I have high hopes for this film.

This looks like it is going to be fantastic, and I am glad such an important figure is being represented by such an outstanding actor.

What is the buzz from the set like?
