Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler Picture

Posted by on 08. 02. 2008in News Chat

When one thinks of what an upcoming Darren Aronofsky film might be, you would be forgiven if your mind didn’t instantly went to ideas such as the world of professional wrestling. However, for some time now we’ve known that his next project is indeed taking place in that world (although I’m sure with a lot more depth and human condition angles) in “The Wrestler”.

ComingSoon gives us this little synopsis of the project:

The drama centers on Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Rourke), a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.

Have to admit, it sounds like somthing WWE Films would do. But I have a lot of trust in Aronofsky and I’m sure the film will end up being something quite different than what we all may be expecting.

Anyway, they’ve dome some filming with the help of some low tier wrestling federation called the WXW, who have put up our first picture of Mickey Rourke in his wrestling get up. I’ve become a huge fan of Rourke over the past couple of years and I’ll basically see anything he’s in. Check it out:

Hey now, don’t be bashing pro wrestling now (I know you didn’t exactly do that, but I detect a snarky undertone). For those who care, Rourke is pictured with Afa of Wild Samoans fame, who also helped train him for the film.

Once again, anyone interested in reading the screenplay…drop me a line.

I dig Aronofsky, and I dig “the idea” of Professional Wrestling–I don’t watch it now, but I did in High School, and I got REALLY into it. I am thinking this could be interesting, particularly given Aronofsky’s engaging visual style. It could be a new view on wrestling entertainment, and I’m down for this.

    Rourke, awesome! Aronofsky, meh.

Checkout Rumble Fish, Angel Heart, The Pledge, Barfly, and Pope of Greenwich Village. I’m not a fan of Sin City but casting Rourke as Marv (my own personal choice as well) is the thing Rodriugez did right.

Hopefully Aronofsky will be elevated to Rourke’s level.

Also…Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood are in this film. Great cast.

    As a wrestling Im pumped

I read the Slashfilm script review and it made it sound rad and accurate

Theyre doing a lot of scenes with NOrtheast American indies, Im really pumped

I’m a wrestler, and let me tell you the world of wrestling is ripe ground to tell a very interesting story if it’s done right. I don’t want to see a film that pretends wrestling is real. That’s what the TV shows are for.

I hope this film is realistic, in that it shows that often the guys behind the outlandish characters in the ring are often every bit as interesting.

This could be either really good, or really bad. I really hope it’s good, and it looks like it should be from the sounds of it.

  8. I hope it turns out great!

If you think you’ll like the wrestler, check out a hilarious new comedy I just picked up called Wrestlemaniac. It’s a little known indie that was herladed in THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS & VARIETY. It was shot at world famous GLEASON’s GYM where Aronofsky was refused!!!

This is a much better and more realistic look at the indie wrestling scene with WWE hall of famers. you can get it at wrestlemaniacthemovie.com

Don’t think it’s possible to make a ROCKY out of a wrestling movie–it’s staged.

This is not a very original story, but it’s well constructed and Mickey Rourke is very good. It’s like Rocky only with a wrestler, but a bit better acting.

I Hyped THe Wrestler on Everhype and gave it 94% which I think is fairly accurate.

I wouldn’t mind getting some opinions on it . If you get on there, rate me a 5 & request friendship.
