Heath Ledger Found Dead In NY Apartment
Folks ….. I don’t know what to say. Here is the news blurb from MSNBC:
Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28.
According to WNBC, Ledger was found with pills strewn all around him.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there found him dead at 3:26 p.m. ET.
This is horribly upsetting and disheartening news. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family at this difficult hour. We will keep you posted as more news is made available to us.

People at my work were suddenly rumbling and I just found out this is why. Terrible news. I hope the drug related aspect turns out to be true, but alas, I don’t hold much hope. He seemed like a decent guy.

I’ve never felt this effected by the death of an actor before….he was a great one of this generation. A sad loss for everyone.
Why can’t i find a blip of this news on any networks, the second the anna nicole death struck it was the only news for months, why is the death of a talented actor not important (or dramatic) enough?

Never had I heard anything about Ledger having a substance abuse problem, unlike Brad Renfro, whose death frankly came not as that much of a surprise.
Heath Ledger worked hard on his career to get out of the “Handsome leading man”- niche and in my opinion succeeded. He easily could have milked it as the pretty boy and then vanish into obscurity. He didn’t and proved that he is a gifted actor in fine films. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was great film and a lot of that came from Heath’s excellent performance. My thoughts are with his family.

Duplicate what everyone else has added to this latest Hollyweird tragedy! These losses always dumbfound me, was he afraid of all the $$$$ that TDK was gonna (I’m assuming here…) bring in? Now, what I’m about to say isn’t going to be too pleasant to some ears.
You would think that after the passing of Brad Renfro a few days ago, some of Hollywood would have noticed. Well, now, here we are. Did we learn anything?
I, too, wonder where this leaves ‘Dark Knight’ in terms of promotion. The Joker character is going to be seen causing mayhem, killing and talking of murder (”Someone will die tonight…I’m a man of my word”) and while the picture is pretty much done with filming (they are in post, are they not?) …will this event make the Joker seem more creepy…will Joker still be a main selling point? If the scene of the actor’s death suggests drugs and/or booze, will that effect the moviegoing public, knowing the actor died before his time, but died rather stupidly?
I don’t want to sound insensitive to Ledger’s family, friends and fans. But if any good can come out of this -and the death of Renfro- is that folks need to clean up.

An entertainment reporter is talking to CNN, and he said that he interviewed Heath shortly after TDK wrapped, and Heath was saying how he had to start taking AmBien because the role shook him up so much. He couldn’t sleep because he was so disturbed by the role.
Because of this death do you guys think TDK will draw more of a crowd?
So I’m reading on Wikipedia that he was found in an apartment owned by Mary Kate Olsen? WTF? CNN is reporting they found him in his apartment.

Apparently Headline news is reporting that Heath Ledger immersed himself into the Joker and apparently in an interview a few weeks back he noted he needed sleeping pills to help him sleep because he was so immersed in the character that it troubled him.
I certainly hope this isn’t true.

This is very sad. Both him and Renfro were some of the best actors of their generation, and we lost both of them within a month. Both rather stupidly. Hopefully this will scare some other great actors straight.

Its weird, I have been following the Dark Knight so closely for the last year or so that I feel like a friend of mine died, or at the very least someone I knew.
It is a shame. It seemed like he was on the verge of his career exploding. That could be a pretty terrifying thing in and of itself, if its not something you are striving for.

As for TDK drawing a bigger crowd, it could be possible. It’s almost like The Crow. If it weren’t for Brandon Lee’s death, I doubt that movie would have made any coverage. This is one of Heath Ledger’s final performances. People would want to see it.

The official comments mention that there were perscription pills in the apartments, not STREWN all over the place. Also, the police have mentioned to reporters that they do NOT believe that it was a suicide, confirmation one way or another will come from the autopsy tomorrow of course. This is sad indeed.

They were in a bottle. They (Police) just mentioned again on CNN that they were not scattered all over as previously reported. There is a lot of sensationalistic reporting going on just to make a good headline. Only a few sites seem to be interested in the truth. They believe it was an accidental overdose and he was found naked I believe (In bed, no less – that does not seem so unusual to me).

The tragedy here is not Heath Ledger’s. He’s dead, vanished, no longer in existence. He isn’t resting, in peace or otherwise, that, would be superstition. The tragedy lies with his daughter, his family, his friends, his acquaintances, his admirers, and the rest of us – anyone who would have enjoyed life a little bit more because of his work as an actor. That is why this a truly sad and tragic death.
Thats crazy that playing the joker got him on sleeping pills and all fucked up.

I heard the news over 6 hours ago and I’m still shaking my head and saying WTF. I finally saw Brokeback Mountain a couple months ago and his performance was the best I have seen from ANY actor in years. When it was first announced that it may be suicide, I was distraught with grief. Seriously, I thought I was having a hard time and almost did something about it quite recently..but at the last minute decided to deal with it because the only way to go on from now, was up. Accidental on intentional, we will miss Heath. His work will continue on for generations.

*UPDATE!* Reports are saying Ledger’s family states his death was an accident; he’s been using sleeping pills during The Dark Knight because he has been having problems sleeping.
It makes sense that his family is saying that, of course they want it to seem like an accident- It gives him more decency, does it mean that it’s true? Not necessarily.
as a person who has a very bad problem with insomnia….no its not as bad as fight club……but imagine only getting 2 hours a sleep for 10 years….it pretty much fucks u up…thus sleeping agents…im not gonna name the many high end sleeping pills….but i can tell u that if u are told to take 1/4 of a pill and that helps u get a sleep well….it aint hard to take to much and possibly be fatal….well just like every one else im sure that this is a major tragedy…..im not spiritual but i will say that my heart goes out for his friends and family…..btw this in no way has any effect on me about wanting to see TDK….it sux that he immersed himself in the method acting routine to get “into” the joker….but i really dont know except he was an awesome actor….love when he played NED KELLY.

about TDK…This will not hurt the movie….Everybody thinks that tons of people are going to see TDK because of this, but, TDK was already the most anticipated movie of the year. Unfortunately, this reminds me of Brandon Lee’s Death on ‘The Crow’ set. (However, I found that case to be FAR more tragic than this) TDK will become a cult classic, and it will just make people sad to see a man die before seeing his breakthrough “superstardom” performance onscreen. He was far too young….it really is such a waste.

Yesterday I was just sending John a link to this news story when Doug broke it on the site.
Tragic. I’m a big fan of Mr. Ledger’s work. He will be missed.
I interviewed a local Brethren pastor yesterday who mentioned that he was (briefly) prescribed Ambient for his insomnia. He discontinued using the drug for some of the already reported reasons/effects. Combine that with a possible pneumonia and some sort of complication may have come into play. Its also
I regret immediately jumping to the “suicide” conclusion yesterday…part of the ‘celebrity landscape’ we’ve become accustomed to. Still a very sad ending for a talented young man who was beginning to see larger success. Also very sad for those who he left behind, especially his young daughter.
….forgot to add, that it is STILL flu season. Here in the Central Valley there was a viscious stomach virus making the rounds which tossed me into a local hospital stay for a day and a half….
Condolences to the cast and crew and anyone connected with TDK project. This can’t be easy for them! Hopefully looking at his performace can help in the healing.
I haven’t been this shocked by a celebrity death since Christopher Reeve. But this one (like all young deaths) comes out of nowhere and smacks you in the face. Who saw this coming?
Just like Brandon Lee and River Phoenix, when we talk about Heath, we will talk of an actor whose best work was almost certainly ahead of him and what work it could have been.
One thing we can be thankful for is that (and i’m pretty sure about this) TDK will be an awesome film and a great final tribute to Heath. Some actors who die before their time aren’t that lucky. Raul Julia was a great actor and his final film was ‘Streetfighter’.
i am so shocked by his death, it’s the first time i have been upset about an actor passing away. I hope his role as the joker shows what an awsome actor he is and that if he was still alive how far up the hollywood actors list it would have propelled him.

I can completely believe the story of ‘accidental OD’. People who scoff at it clearly have never been on RX sleep aids. Its WAAAY too easy with nights of no sleep to take a sleep med… and if you mentally think ‘this should be working’ and yet you are only sleeping one hour or two AFTER taking it… perhaps you think… maybe I’ve built up a tolerance…a half or one more may help… its not that hard to think that way. (now if you take 6… well then…THAT’D say something else…)Sleeplessness is also a sign of severe depression..but sometimes… its just stress….
I dunno. I really just think that people should, instead of focusing on whether he took his own life or not, or why he would…. should focus on the fact that he is gone and that the family and friends really close to him are having to deal with this media s**t storm and all other forms of it. There are already extremist groups posting and threating to picket outside his funeral for his work on Brokeback and other such ridiculousness. Regardless on ones view of death or suicide… they SHOULD realize that whatever the cause people who are left behind are in pain and mourning and need support… not to hear how cowardly or stupid or selfish their loved one was….
besides… flip it around a bit… how would YOU feel if it was YOUR loved one… I’m sure some of you wouldn’t be so quick to judge a person so negatively….

The movie was going to be a hit anyway, but now, people who weren’t into Batman but have some morbid curiosity about seeing Ledger’s last hurrah will go and see the movie.
I have to say on a personal level, I was already pumped about seeing Dark Knight, and had already planned to take my little sister with me to see it in IMAX opening day. Now, I’ll be feeling a little dread on the way to the theater. I can’t say for sure how this will impact my viewing of the film. It’s not like the film is being released tomorrow. We’ve got a few months to wrap our heads around this, and I might feel differently then, but right now, I really don’t want to look at that Dark Knight poster.
I was so looking forward to The Dark Knight and seeing Heath as The Joker. Now, I won’t see the same movie as I would have a few hours ago. I will constantly be thinking of his tragic death. Every word out of his mouth will have a different connotation. Every look will be one of despair, a cry for help, an overwhelming emptiness…instead of a lust for chaos and destruction. If I could I would trade in The Dark Knight only to see Heath portray different characters on the big screen. My sympathy goes out to friends, family and fans of Heath.
On a side note: I hope Terry Gilliam is different connotation picking up things. I don’t want to see a ‘Lost in …’ documentary.

You know, I’ve held my tongue over some comments posted here, but I can’t take this anymore. It’s really easy to type some wiseass remark when you don’t have to meet and see the people you are writing about. We’ve all done it, I’ve done it, but this situation does not warrant smartass comments about pictures of corpses. If you wouldn’t make that little comment to Heath’s family and friends, then I suggest you think before you type.
Now, I know all about free speech and whatnot, but there’s also this concept I like to call TACT. This is not a joke or a punchline. This is a human being who has died much too young, left behind a young child that probably won’t remember him, along with a devastated family who is now having to deal with a tragic death, media rumors, and some anti-gay group planning on picketing their loved one’s funeral. I’m all for snark, but take it to another post, please. This is not the place.
I didn’t belive it when i heard this. i hope it doesn’t make the dark knight feel weird when we’re watching it.
