Christian Bale in Talks to Join ‘Public Enemies’

It looks like 2008 is going to be a busy year for Christian Bale. He is already in talks to star alongside Johnny Depp in the biopic, ‘Public Enemies.’

Yahoo!News Gives us these details:

An adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43,” the Universal Pictures project follows the government’s attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Depp is playing Dillinger.
Bale would play Melvin Purvis, who led the FBI’s manhunt for Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history.

Batman, John Connor, and Melvin Purvis…oh my! I’ve always thought Christian Bale was truly one of the best actors in Hollywood, if only for his amazing versatility when it comes to playing roles onscreen.  (The same year he made the character Patrick Bateman famous in ‘American Psycho,’ he also played Jesus in a television movie.)

I’m actually more excited to see him tackle this role as a detective hunting down Johnny Depp, than playing John Connor in Terminator 4.  In my opinion, I think the actor is too well known and should have more choices than playing a role two others have already had a crack at.  (Also, he’s already part of a popular franchise right now. That should be enough!)

That’s just my opinion though. What do you guys’ think of Bale’s involvement in his upcoming projects?

  1. Just a trivia tidbit…I look forward to this movie, as it might give me a little more insight into the time period my grandfather (Police Chief of Chicago Heights Police Department 1931-1938) lived through. I know my grandfather had dealings with Capone. Capone’s mother supposedly lived in Chicago Heights and my grandfather told Capone he could come into Chicago Heights to visit her if there was no trouble. In fact story is that when my grandfather was killed (recorded as an “accidental shooting” Capone notified my grandmother that “his men did not do it, but they would get who did”. This movie will be a sort of “connection” to my grandfather’s time period and history, as I never knew him and my father was 11 when Chief Winchell Hills was killed. Best of luck!

  2. I look forward to any role Bale takes on. He’s a brilliant actor, and brings a natural credibility to all of his characters. His current choices may connect him to two adjacent big-budget franchises, but they’ll likely be vastly different movies and characters.

@Terry – I’ve read both ways… Reading the T4 synopsis on IMDB, it would be cool seeing Christian play the human traitor, too.

And seeing him and Johnny Depp going up against one another sounds like a great match up!

  3. BALE good….and i think IMO that he would be a perfect john connor…..bout him allready having a succeful franchise…..well they said he wont be in much of the first new terminator so its not like he will be working on it much during the times these are shooting let alone the 2nd terminator will come out after the batman franchise is most likely done….IMO

  4. There’s the documentary seris playing on History Channel right now; and I still would like to see someone bring Larry McMurty/Diane Onassa’s novel “Pretty Boy Floyd” to the screen. (The novel started out as a script)

In any case, would I see a film with Bale and Depp in it?
I’m already in line, and they haven’t even had the first day of shooting yet.
    That’s how hyped I am.
