Top Horror Movies of 2007

Hatchet2007Every year, most popular websites and magazines compile a list of the BEST and WORST movies of the year, and if you’re a hardcore horror fan, you know that most of the films you considered the “best” are most likely going to be shafted. In fact, in most cases the best of horror usually finds itself on the “worst” list of the year. Yes, it’s been a tough year to be a horror fan. This year the public was obsessed about the critical failures of horror (a.k.a. anything with torture porn) this year, that most forgot about the gems that Hollywood and Independent films had to offer. So I’m compiling this list for you guys who are horror aficionados like myself. This is for the horror fan who can’t understand why your favorite movies are always given a green splat on rotten tomatoes. So I hope you enjoy my list of movies I got to see in theatres and through festival circuits and feel free to list of a few of your own suggestions!

1. Hatchet-Hatchet is not by any means something that will change the horror genre. It is a movie with cheesy dialogue and very little character development. However, it is by far the most fun I had at the movies this year! This movie is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. I highly recommend watching this at a party and watching the guest reactions when the murderous Victor Crowley hits the screen with his trusty hatchet. This movie has special appearances by Robert Englund, Tony Todd, and has the one and only Kane Hodder playing Victor Crowley. It’s a must-see for horror fans!

2. 30 Days of Night– This movie was something I was waiting for since the beginning of the year. In my review (which you could read here) I mentioned how this movie was far from perfect, but it was still the best vampire movie I had seen this decade. As far as mainstream horror movies go, this one definitely pushed the limit in terms of gore and style. Its eerily quiet and somber score was something I appreciated and welcomed more than the classic “BOO” scares that pollute many other films. If you enjoy watching vampire movies, then you will definitely LOVE ’30 Days of Night.’

3. Vacancy– This is a movie that I wish got more love at the box office. Unfortunately because it was released a week before a couple of huge summer blockbusters hit the screen, most people forgot about this horror film. Another reason why people skipped out on it was because a lot of people couldn’t get over Luke Wilson being in a horror movie. (This is a shame, because he was awesome in it.) Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale did a tremendous job in this fast paced horror movie as a recently separated couple trying to stay alive at a motel inhabited by psychos who make a living off making snuff films. Despite having a rushed and cop-out ending, it definitely met my expectations, which is rare for any movie to do now these days.

4. Rob Zombie’s Halloween– Yes, I liked ‘Halloween’ and I’m not afraid to admit it. In fact a few months ago I had reviewed this movie and practically had my head torn apart just because I gave it a positive review. (Ironically most of the people were people who had yet to see the movie.) However, I did get many apologies days after when people had finally seen the movie. As far as horror remakes go, ‘Halloween’ was definitely superior to the crap horror fans have witnessed in the past few years. Unfortunately, a lot of people out there weren’t willing to give this movie a chance. Sure, this movie is not superior to ‘Halloween.’ However, it doesn’t try to be. I highly commend Rob Zombie for taking the chance and making this film his own.

5. Severance-‘Severance’ was a movie I had heard great things about and when I first viewed the movie, it was nothing like I expected it was going to be. (This is not a bad thing.) This movie was able to successfully poke fun at the conventions of the horror genre and yet embrace as well. It is not until the half way point until the audience knows what kind of horror movie they are in for. (I honestly didn’t know if I was in for a supernatural movie or a straight slasher) Also, unlike most horror comedies, this one knew when to play it for laughs and when to scare the living sh*t out of its audience.

6. Grindhouse– Even though I didn’t enjoy Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ half as much as I had enjoyed Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Planet Terror,’ there’s no denying that the collaborative double bill was a remarkable experience at the theatres or drive in. The look and feel of both films were amazing and I felt like I had transported back into the seventies. Too bad it didn’t do that well theatrically. If it had done well, maybe we wouldn’t be subjected to the bullshit of buying both films separately without the great fake trailers. (At least we get ‘Machete’ in the ‘Planet Terror’ DVD)

7. Fido– Every year there is one or two horror movies that actually get great reviews from people other than horror movie critics. This year, Fido was one of them. This Canadian Rom Zom Com was definitely had a unique take on the zombie genre and was definitely a film I recommend to movie fans in GENERAL. There are a few key performances that made this movie quite memorable for me. Billy Connelly as ‘Fido’ was pure gold and so was Tim Blake Nelson as the kick-ass necrophiliac neighbour. (Yup..the man is in love with his zombie) The film is ‘Shaun of the Dead’ meets ‘Pleasantville.’ Go and see this!

8. Mulberry Street-When I had first heard about the premise of Mulberry Street, and found it is a movie about killer were rats running rabid in New York city, I was expecting a cheesy and goofy horror movie. Instead, I got a great movie that wasn’t afraid of potentially boring its audience for the first half by getting to know its characters, before the horror began. Like I had said in my review,

“Mulberry Street may take longer to start than it takes a insecure and drunken male virgin to find a woman’s G-spot, but when it finally “finds that spot” it is a very satisfying (and more importantly, relieving) experience from then on in, and ends with an unexpected climax. (hehehe) I recommend you all see this horror indie (well directed by Jim Mickle) and I hope you guys enjoy as much as I did.”

9. Rec-I was lucky enough to watch this Spanish horror movie earlier this year about a news reporter and her cameraman stuck in building with zombies. It has been a big hit in the Festival Circuit, but unfortunately American audiences will probably view the upcoming premature remake to the movie, ‘Quarantined’ (starring ‘Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter and ‘Hostel’s’ Jay Hernandez) before they are able to check this creepy horror movie out. Like ‘The Blair Witch Project’ everything the audience sees is through the cameraman’s lenses. Unlike, The Blair Witch Project that relied strictly on your imagination for the horror, this one shows you the horror and the gore, which to me I found extremely terrifying. I wish they would just release this film with subtitles!

10. The Mist– ‘The Mist’ was probably the most surprising movie for me this year, because I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did. In fact, I found myself intrigued by the characters more than the horror elements that were in the film. I cared about a good number of these characters, (minus the crazy religious chick) and hoped that all of them would make it to the end, but because of the drab and dark tone of the movie, I knew that that wasn’t going to be possible. This movie has probably the most shocking ending I’ve ever seen in a mainstream horror movie and it will have (and has already had) people talking.

Honorable Mentions: Inside, (*Hadn’t seen it, but from what I hear it’s going to be a classic!) I am Legend, The Girl Next Door, (*Very hard to watch) All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Alone, 28 Weeks Later, Shrooms, The Tripper, and Mr. Brooks

  1. Ha, after further research, “Descent” is from 2005, so no wonder, I was misled by other commenters, why am I surprised? Having said that, I’m glad [rec] was on there, should have been Number 1.

  2. I’m only resurrecting this because I’m going backwards through the last few years watching movies from people’s “best” lists. I find the comments interesting in hindsight. From the perspective of 2012 I think “The Descent” is almost universally recognized as a great horror movie. I don’t hear anybody talking about “Hostel 2” or most of these other films as great anything. Except “Grindhouse” of course. (Yes, that IS what the double feature is called, some people seem to have trouble with new concepts)

p.s. “Hatchet” is a piece of crap.

  3. I Thought Grindhouse was a fun experience, the first half shoulda been the second IMO, in other words Tarantino’s film shoulda went 1st. Then the Zombie stuff.

    “Grindhouse” 1 movie/2 parts

    just saying

  4. I cant see how this is ONE movie no matter how i look at it, its called a double feature, it has two seperate stories, tarantino worked on one and robert worked on the other, they are both full length, you can buy them seperately with the “grindhouse presents” up top. I just read an interview with tarantino talking about the TWO films, (cant tell you how many times he says TWO) being very different..oh and he also mentions that you can see the grindhouse double feature in theatres or you could wait for the seperate films on dvd..funny he seems to think they made two different movies. look…im wasting too much time on here talking about a double feature that i thought was juvenile at best anyway..so heres the thing.. I believe you are right to call the double dvd grindhouse, you are right to call it that. after doing some research i found this to be true. But dont tell me that just cause a double feature event dubbed grindhouse is the name of one movie, if that was the case, it wouldnt be called a double feature to begin with.

    1. And that you choose to ignore these two gums as one presentation called Grindhouse is your problem. Fact remains that these two feature films ( and fake trailers) are together called Grindhouse irregardless of how you pretend they are

  5. Jesus Christ how many times are people gonna call “Grindhouse” a movie, its an old name for horror flicks that where of the exploitation genre..not the name of a movie, double feature,or otherwise. Tarantino paid homage to all the old grindhouse features and made two new features, that both have names..”Planet Terror..and “Death Proof”. If you were to ask a true blue horror fan if hes seen Grindhouse, he’d prob say “sure which film, theres like 20” thats why they call it “A” grindhouse double feature and not “THE” grindhouse double feature, cause there have been many.

    1. Funny, all the theaters put GRINDHOUSE on their marquis when promoting this, and it was presented as Grindhouse in the ads and posters.

Thats why people are calling it Grindhouse.

That it consisted of two separate films that were subsequently released separately doesn’t change that these two films were originally presented as Grindhouse: The Planet Terror and Deathproof double bill.

Its called Grindhouse because thats what they called it to begin with – emulating the grindhouse experience of old.

Ask any horror buff and they can tell the difference between this particular product called Grindhouse and the theater experience it references.

      1. whether or not a marquis said Grindhouse or not does not change the fact that “Grindhouse” isnt the name of a movie. If you look at any of the ads youll notice it says “A Grindhouse Double feature”, not “the grindhouse movie”, because there is no such thing.. once again there are plenty of “Grindhouse Presents..” movies out there, doesnt make it the name of the movie though.
Does that mean if i find a marquis that says “Grindhouse presents” from the 70s that I should think thats the name of the movie, cause id be wrong. Why not do a quick search on the net as i just did, youll see just how many grindhouse films there are. Oh and btw, they didnt call it a grindhouse double feature to emulate the old experience, they did it cause it IS a grindhouse dbl feature, not some homage film named grindhouse

      2. And yet the special edition Bluray that features both the movies and the fake trailers in the intermission is marketed as Grindhouse.

        Simply titled GRINDHOUSE.

Whenever this is presented as its full experience its called GRINDHOUSE. You can order it in the catalogue as GRINDHOUSE.

The fact that the word also means a type of presentation experience does not change the fact that they named this movie production GRINDHOUSE.

You are trying to deny everything they are marketing the film as. You are not correct no matter how much you want to say the definition of the word is NOT the title.

It is the title whether you like it or not.

    2. well i had posted another response before but i guess it got deleted for language maybe?
the response sounded something like this:
whether or not tarantino/rodriguez did in fact try to market this as one thing entitled Grindhouse, does not make it ONE movie, it is TWO movies. In the 70s double feature B horror flicks were “Grinded Out” so fast, they decided to call the films “grindhouse” double features. I see you posted the double feature for the new dvd, which i see they did indeed dub “Grindhouse”, but that is still not the name of the movie, the movies have there own names, and you could purchase these both seperately. If you were to look at the cover of “Death proof” you would see a big ole Grindhouse P-R-E-S-E-N-T-S on the top of the dvd, not just Grindhouse.. FOR THE LAST TIME GRINDHOUSE IS THE NAME FOR A DOUBLE FEATURE-NOT THE NAME OF A SINGLE MOVIE.

      1. And yet it is still CALLED Grindhouse.

You can keep repeating that the title isn’t Grindhouse because you insist it refers to a style of presentation, but these two films were presented as ONE PRODUCT and that product was titled Groundhouse.

The horror movie HOUSE is its title despite the fact that there are things in this world called HOUSE that are not a movie. You need to get out of your narrow view and accept that Tarantino/Rodriguez made a joint project together called GRINDHOUSE – even though there is such a thing as a grindhouse style presentation – it is still the title of this movie (which is made up of two movies and some trailers)

      2. how is one title the title for two movies, you dont make any sense. You just said that the grindhouse feature they made consisted of TWO movies didnt you??? Those two movies have their own names right??? The dvd only says Grindhouse alone when you buy it as the double, if you buy them seperate it says Grindhouse PRESENTS..than the name of the movie. the only thing your right about is them dubbing the double feature or “experience” as GRINDHOUSE, not the name of the movie cause there are two. Its simple math really, Grindhouse presents:Death Proof..thats 1, Grindhouse presents:Planet terror…thats 2..what dont you get, its not the name of a movie, even if they did name the double dvd grindhouse

      3. And all the segments in the Heavy Metal film had their own titles, and all the individual stories in The Twilight Zone Movie had their own titles too.

But your opinion that the descriptive cannot also be the title is your issue here.

Unfortunately you are battling your opinion over what SHOULD have happened with the title with what actually DID happen with the title.

It was presented in theaters (one ticket, both movies) as Grindhouse, the collected experience on Bluray is called Grindhouse. And its listed on IMDB as Grindhouse. (Which is described as “Two full length feature horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film feature. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies.”)

FACT: The movies are presented as one film called GRINDHOUSE.

Myth: You dont think they should have been called that.

You can argue your wishes all day long about what SHOULD have happened but that is irrelevant because it didnt happen that way.

The MOVIE is called Grindhouse. Even if you dont want it to be.

  6. I was also surprisingly intrigued by the Mist, but it was no where near my favorite. Vacancy was pretty decent overall. Zombie’s Halloween and 30 Days of Night take the top spots in my opinion. 30 Days of Night may not be “jumpy” but I sure would not like being put in that situation, or any of the situations in the other movies for that matter.

  7. Good list. But I still prefer Grindhouse and Rob Zombies Halloween over Vacancy. I also enjoyed the Mist as well. Inside should be on the list, its pretty gory and good!

  8. BF.BLOGGER you are a prick. Your mum is a cunt and sucks more than your taste in movies. Your dad is a paedo, he chats to 12 year old Asian girls on-line and watches them put Pokemon action figures up their fanny’s while shitting on eachothers chests. His obsession originated when you were younger and he used to ask you to put Action Men up your ass and dance infront of him naked. YOU SICKOS.

    PS. Good blog.

  9. Ditto with Phil on Beowulf – but didn’t that come out last year? Somehow, I can’t quite get into Tarantino but the double-feature concept is an excellent one. So much of the time, I go to the movies knowing I’d much rather watch a series of good shorts than one looong and boring movie. I felt similarly about Kill Bill – make one cool movie, instead of two drawn-out ones with pretentious dialogue. Seriously.

    Nice blog :-)

  10. to psycho_path:

I love you. Really I do. So I was a little off on the premise, but hot damn, I knew there’d be a movie genius who could answer my question. Thank you :)

  11. to Vicki:

I’m 50% sure that the movie you’re looking for is called:
“Funny Games U.S. (2007)” starring Naomi Watts and Tim Roth.

  12. So basically I’m pulling my hair out ’cause I can’t find this movie. If someone could help me out, I will seriously love them forever and ever. It’s about these salesmen that come to your door and when the get in your house they tie you up and tell you how they’re going to kill you. I don’t think it would really be a horror movie, more or less a dark comedy. PLEASE tell me if you have any idea what it’s called. Thank you!

  13. and to Ron R… (since i just noticed his response)

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 – Trash…
The Descent – Good, but hardly worthy of a best list…
    Hills Have Eyes 2 – Complete trash…
28 Weeks Later – It did have zombies man. Open your eyes a bit next time. Not as good as the first, but still decent.

dont get too hyped up next time before providing “fools gold” to the fans of a genre.

  14. i didnt see Hostel 2, but if it is anything like the first it is another one of those “hey, lets throw in enough blood and gore to make people think they like it” deals. as for your list and all, i agree with it for the most part, but must also agree with saying “vacancy was not that great”. it had me laughing most of the time, especially where the car drifts (thats right, it drifts) through the phone booth :P but see, if i were to run someone’s ass over it would definately be with a drift, lol. but good list for the most part. Fido was hilarious, and The Mist… well… best fucking ending i have seen in a movie in a long time.

  15. my personal fav’s:

    1) ZODIAC
    2) texas chainsaw massacre: the beginnig
    3) jaws 3
    4) the hills have eyes
    5) wolf creek
    6) turistas
    7) halloween (rob Z’s)
    8) scream (cant go past the classic 90’s slasher flicks)
    9) hostel
    10) final destiantion 3
    11) cabin fever

also, although not exactly horrors, quite enjoyable:

    1) when a stranger calls
    2) rogue (aussie films have a unique feel i adore)
    3) disturbia

anyway, im really craving some new horror/thriller/scary films to watch… any suggestions people??

  17. I can’t imagine how hostel 2 can go on anyone’s best list, in fact, I can’t understand how hostel even got a remake when there are so many other better choices.

Off of the orignial list, I liked 30 days of night, vacancy, grindhouse, rec, and the mist. Nothing much to say about 30 days, very few good vampire movies out there and this one was definitely worth watching. I liked vacancy because honestly, I didn’t think two celebrity actors who seem like they don’t really belong in a horror movie can pull it off so well. I agree grindhouse was overly hyped, but still an enjoyable film nonetheless. Rec was indeed awesome, and I don’t think the US remake is not going to live up to it if they make one. Although I like The mist and it was one of the better stephen king adaptations, it might not have deserved to be included in “best”. The ending was absolutely brilliant though.

The saw series is definitely going downhill and I honestly don’t think saw IV is even close to the first couple of saw movies.

  18. OOO Shit!!! I don’t know how I forgot this one…But it definately needs to be in on my list as well…Another continous DVD Player favorite is “ZODIAC”….Sorry! But I wanted to see this movie, but didn’t here much about it until someone said you need to see it…And when I did i was impressed….It creeped the shit out of me…..the mood, the tone and the fact of still not knowing just who is the hell was the Zodiac Killer just made me look over my shoulders while I watched it in the dark….The acting was stellar…it wasn’t cheesy and the mystery and suspense behind wanting to know whats coming next was the bomb….I at what point was not bored and wanted to join the investigation of Jake G’s character….it sucked me and and got a hold of me to……Just A Damn Good Movie….Oscar Worthy….other than that so called hollywood Oscar bullshit thats reviewed by obvious idiots

  19. First, every true horror fan understands that horror comes in many lights, shades and forms. However, bullshit is bullshit. When you can pick the fake ass hollywood version of horror from real horror then your talking. CHECK THIS LIST

    1.Texas Chainsaw Massacre2…Gore,Style,Raw and Ruthless
(sometimes what turns insanity into no having a care in the world)

    2. The Descent…Unexspected Horror,Tone,Gore and Style
(for an indie film it was just a kick ass claustrophobic nightmare…and reminds me of watching an X-Files episode with another 30 min added)

    3. Halloween…Horror,Terror,Style and Tone
(When I first heard Dimension giving Zombie the green on the remake …I yelled “what the fuck”…But he’s a must see director in my book if he continues to make them like this….Great homeage and depics to the original without the hollywood fake shit…..KUDOS ALL DAY)

    4.Hills Have Eyes2…Gore,Style and Tone
(As equal to the 1st remake, with okay acting from the cast…But still enjoyable enough to make my list)

    5.Saw4…Clever,Style,Mystery and Terror
(Always a fan of the series, however it was only lacked the suspense of the torture that the first 2 gave…if you figure out the mystery behind how it all will end, you will appreciate it more…FOR THE HATERS OUT THERE)

6.30 Days of Night…Style,Tone and Gore
(Best Vampire movie since Blade2…Well acted and a few unexpected scenes to die for :officer getting his head chopped off)

    7.Hostel2..Gorenography,Raw and Torture
(Wasn’t better than the 1st,but held up to Eli Roth’s expectancy….it seemed rushed with obvious scenes to come…still good)

    8.28 Weeks Later…Scenery,Tone and Style
(Not as good as the original and lacks what made it 28…The Zombies…I wanted more scenes with the zombies than the landscape of what London looks like…still good though)

    9.Wrong Turn2…Gore and Plot
(Wasn’t the best straight to DVD,but find myself popping it into the player many times over and over)

    10.Hannibal Rising…Terror,Sinister and Art
(If your like me..an artist then (HR) was just that…Art and Horror combined…Different from the first 2 but still is worthy of getting the 10 spot on my list)

NOW SINK YOUR TEETH INTO THAT AND UNDERSTAND WHY WE CRITIQUE THE CRAFT OF HORROR….IT IS WHAT IT IS….AND IT’S IN ALL OF US….THE NEED OF THE FLESH!!!!!!

  20. I have to agree on most of the comments but I cannot believe the hype on grindhouse. Apart from the big promotion and everyone going crazy for it…it was like uh ok, if at that. Seriously people give this film to much credit for what is worth. I know that everyone will be upset at my indignation but I just had to say it. Jes.

  21. I came with some of my favourite list….

    1.Vacancy
    2.See no evil
    3.Hills have Eyes
    4.Wrong Turn
    5.Black Christmas
    6.Descent
    7.Tursitas
    8.Grind house

  22. Latest movies are not so good, they are all the same, evrey body dye except the heroe who get a few scratches and the hot girl fall in love with him.i meen …ther’s no room for love in horror movies people…this make it sound like a grandma’s story with happy ending,i realy think if they will remake the classic’s it will be god,my personal list:

    1 See no evil
    2 Texas chainsaw massacre
    3.Hallaween
    4 Saw 4
    5 hannibal Rising

  23. Hey Serena,I didn’t notice that you cleared out the confusion about Mr.Brooks and I Am Legend,so pardon my previous post.

    My favorites:
    1.30 Days Of Night
    2.Halloween
    3.P2
    4.Hostel 2
    5.Severence

  24. 30 Days Of Night is my favorite horror flick of the year,I liked the story, acting, suspense and all very much.
Mr.Brooks is a thriller and I Am Legend is sci-fi flick, there is no point in calling them horror.
I loved Death Proof but it wasn’t a horror movie but the other movie Planet Terror wasn’t that great because the story is quite common.Mr.Brook is one of the best thriller of this year but it isn’t a horror movie.

  25. Ouch! Down girl, you matched me one for one and then tacked on 3 more. Fair enough, my tastes are pretty diverse(Gigli for instance, go ahead and laugh) and tolerant. Also just watched Hatchet for the first time last night. I swear the ending had me saying “Are you kidding me?” and laughing out loud. I second that choice of yours.

  26. @ the other James Taylor

“Still can’t get my head around anyone putting Vacancy on their list of “good” horror movies but whatever, different strokes.”

That’s okay…I can’t get my head around anyone putting The Hitcher remake, Saw 4, The Reaping, and Hostel 2 on their list of “good” horror movies but whatever, different strokes for different folks, I suppose. :P

  27. Still can’t get my head around anyone putting Vacancy on their list of “good” horror movies but whatever, different strokes.

If I made a top ten it would probably go something like this(no particular order):

1.Behind The Mask(didn’t get to see this till it hit DVD)

2.The Hitcher(love Rutger Hauer’s original performance but Sean Bean was just so damn evil in this one. And Sophia Bush is so damn hot.)

    3.Hannibal Rising(Just awesome.)

4.Saw 4(Series just keeps getting better and better in my opinion)

5.The Reaping(Multiple release date changes made me almost give up on seeing it.)

    6.Grindhouse(Masterpiece.)

7.28 Weeks Later(Honestly didn’t think it would live up to the first one but it did.)

8.Hostel Part 2(Had to wait so long for this one, well worth the wait)

9.30 Days Of Night(Kicked serious ass, gotta find the graphic novel)

10.The Mist(One of the best I’ve ever seen, ending fucked me up)

  28. Yay Death Proof. Minor victory.
I’d love to see a review of Girl Next door. There’s another movie coming out about the same story with Ellen Page as the victim. Should be a great film. Kimberly Pierce is directing and her last film was the excellent Boys Don’t Cry.

  29. okay so I was away from the computer for a day…so I’m just looking at the comments now.

@ Bassturd-Thanks for the feedback, and yes us Halloween remake fans have to stick together! :P

@ Darren- Why there is no 1408? To be quite honest, it’s because I didn’t love 1408. I loved the first half and then the second half just seemed to go on and on….John Cusack’s performance was what held that movie together but it wasn’t enough for me to say it should belong in the top. Maybe should have put it as an honorable mention.

@nbakid 2000, spidey1703- I am Legend and Mr. Brooks have horror elements in them. That is why they are covered on most horror movie websites and magazines. That is why they went on the honorable mention section instead of the top.

@ Chris, nbakid2000- The reason why Behind the Mask is not on the list is because I had already seen 3 times in 2006. When I worked on Arrow in the Head, I actually listed that as my favorite horror movie of 2006. So don’t worry, I didn’t just forget about Glosserman’s soon to be classic, I just talked about it to death. :)

@ Jason-Mulberry Street “sucked shit?” Why did it “suck shit” in your opinion? :P

@ Rusty James- Sorry dude, just loved Vacancy…although you make a good point of the nap. Yeah I did see Murder Party…was not as impressed as the majority of the audience…it was a Napolean Dynamite meets a horror film…. I have to admit Death Proof’s first half has grown on me… Pure Grindhouse material there….although I can’t get over the last half. Girl Next Door made me cry for a straight hour after viewing it. It’s a very tough watch.

@ Alfie-All The Boys Love Mandy Lane was actually a good throwback slasher film. You would like it. Glad you enjoyed REC as much as I did. :) But how can you think 30 days of Night is awful and list Hostel 2 in your favorite movies of 2007? LOL I agree with your worst choices though

@Bishop-Thanks for the POSITIVE comments. So rare these days :P

  30. Mulberry Street was definitely one of my favourites of this year, and goddammit you’ve seen “REC” people? I am envious. I can’t wait to catch that one.

As far as “Behind The Mask” though, that one, technically speaking was officially released last year, yeah?

Fido was pretty hi-fuckin-larious. Murder Party was also one of my most pleasant surprises.

  31. whats “mandy lane” like serena?? i can’t wait to see it. the trailer looks fantastic. I am liking this “serious” throwback type horror we are seeing more and more of…..

and not wink wink “scream” type shit.

fuck scream…..as clever as the first one was what fucks me off is they come along to pretty tear the genre to pieces and mock it then they have the ballss to go and become the very thing they were mocking to begin with…..fuckers.i love craven….he is responsible for 2 of my favorite films of all time yet he can get fucked for making scream…..and add cursed to that too. dreadful.

i saw a film called the signal and that is definitely up there as one of the best horror films I have seen in ages and i definitely agree wth you about REC.

as for mr brooks. not only is mr brooks not a horror…its not a good films. at all. in the slightest.
in fact it is jawdroppingly awful in every single area and deserved its fate as a turkey.

everyone involved with that film should be deeply deeply ashamed of themselves for having been part of such a stupid waste of money. the money spent to make that film would have been put to better use if they had just rounded it up in cash and set fire to it.

    fucking awful.

i am also surprised to see 30 days getting some love. I am only surprised due to the fact that its so bad it is virtually unwatchable and again I am gla dto see it suffer a dismal fate at the box office.
makes the relatively small showings for films like grindhouse and zodiac not hurt so much.

    my favorite

    hatchet
    the signal
    hostel part II
P2 (in a very hokey way..wes bentley was very funny)
    REC.
    murder party
the girl next door – jack ketchum whose novel this is based on has some issues. serious issues. but i lo ve his books.the next film to be made from one of his books is the upcoming Red and that is may favorite. brian cox has been cast as the lead i believe and it is such a great story. it will be a great film (hopefully)

    and that would be it…

    worst
1408 – CGI just aint scary….i have yet to be frightened by anything cg….

I know who killed me – shame the directors first film The Lost (ketchum again) is promising. hopefully this lohan stinker won’t sink his career

Saw IV – please make it stop. just godawful nonsense.

captivity – directed by the director of The Killing Fields. crazy. a complete piece if irredeemable horseshit. they should have a budget burning double feature with the pricks behind mr brooks.

  32. Serena, I’m surprised you liked Vacancy so much. The lead character takes a nap during the film’s climax.
Did you see Murder Party at Toronto After Dark? I’m a little fond of that film. It’s too bad you don’t like Death Proof. I suspect that film will grow on you over time.
Also, check out Girl Next Door. Not conventionally a horror film but pretty scary.

  33. Grindhouse is closer to horror than Mr. Brooks or I Am Legend is, but I understand what Kristina means.

Mr. Brooks is a drama. I am Legend is a sci-fi movie.

Behind the Mask was really really good…

  34. Hatchet was pure crap. A bad movie, unintentional or not. I can’t understand why people found it so enjoyable.

Also, there are a lot of good movies missing from the list, as other people have mentioned:
    – 1408
    – Behind the Mask
    – The Insatiable (with Sean Patrick Flannery – anyone seen it? I loved it)

  35. Mr.Brooks as an “honorable mention” in the best horror films?! Did you see Mr.Brooks?!

    1.) It’s not a horror

2.) If it’s being considered a horror, it should be #1 on the list of “Best Horror Films – 2007” as it was one of the best overall movies of the year, let alone a specific genre!

Also, I Am Legend had cheap jumpy tricks – certainly not a horror either.

  36. I am Legend and Mr Brooks are NOT horror films.

    That is all.

BTW, I’ve never understood why people make a film/music list for 2007 when 2007 isn’t even over yet. If you’re going to consider Mr. Brooks and I am Legend horror, why not wait for “Sweeney Todd” in about 4 days?

  37. Newbury Comics represent! Any peoples who have a NC in their area can buy “Hatchet” and get a free pint glass… It’s really cool to be able to drink out of this movie.

    I am a nerd.

What about “Across the Universe?” Oh that wasn’t supposed to be terrifying? Oh…

  38. It’s alright Serena…I liked Halloween as well. Let the haters hate us. I’ll probably pick it up this week. The uncut director’s edition one. Still wanna see Hatchet and I also liked Vacancy a lot. Luke Wilson was the star of the show in that movie IMO.

  39. I know it’s not a ‘horror’ movie but I would honestly say that Beowulf was a very scary film for me. Crispin Glover’s Grendel was the freakiest thing i’ve seen on screen for a long time.

Of course, i saw it in IMAX 3D which was friggin intense so that might have something to do with it but i was, honestly, terrified in some parts of that film.
