Land of the Lost gets Ferrell and $100 millon Budget

Land of the Lost was a TV show from 1974 that saw a brief remake in the early 90s. Most people don’t recall the original, and the remake for kids was pretty bad too.

I was surprised that anyone else had even heard of it, or even remembered that it existed let alone wanting to make a movie out of it! But when I found out that Will Ferrell was attached I could only roll my eyes. Then I saw the budget and nearly spit milk out my nose.

ScreenRant shares:

Universal Studios is committing $100 MILLION to a comedy based on the old, cheesy Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning kid’s show Land of the Lost.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I like Will Ferrell. I am just tired of him. And to put him into this movie means that its just going to be silly scenes of Ferrell running away from CGI dinos and other monsters.

I recall my mom thought this show was pretty clever and I was about 2 at the time, so it became a part of our daily routine. Obviously the show shared a great deal of syndication in the 70s since I recall seeing this show when I was in elementary school. But I haven’t made any effort to watch it or dig up episodes since then, so it couldn’t have been THAT good.

So now Hollywood is resorting to remakes of shows you forgot about. On one hand this can be a good thing, as it means it can expose you to something that is totally new to you so it wont feel like such a remake. Maybe they will find a show idea that had a REALLY good concept and remake that.

On the other hand. Maybe it just sucked to begin with, so remaking it just breaks the rules and adding a big name and giant budget to it is just insulting.

  1. Oops, sorry Rodney. :)

The news is interesting though. Personally I’m getting burned on Will Farrell, but he seems like an obvious choice if they’re going to go the comedy route.

  2. Oh man – I want to see the Sleestaks and the Pylons with the tray of cheesy jewels. LoL I soooo loved this show as a kid. I haven’t seen it in years, so I don’t know if I would still like it as much. As for them making a movie…I don’t know…I’d rather they leave it alone.

  3. Mozzy beat me to it. Damn him:)

What I was gonna say was, did these people learn NOTHING from Evan Almighty? Comedies typically aren’t MASSIVE blockbusters. When a comedy takes the box office by storm a la Wedding Crashers, it benefits from having a relatively low budget, so it makes its money back fairly quickly. This thing……$100 million plus however much they put into marketing….for this to turn a big profit, it HAS to be PG to appeal to a wide base, and even then, they might be in trouble. Ferrell isn’t a big name with little kids, not to mention that the last film that he did that was kid-friendly(Kicking and Screaming) was absolute ass. If this film sucks, word of mouth will slaughter it. The closest thing that I can compare this positively to would be Night at the Museum, which was a bigger-budgeted comedy that had the advantage of opening around Christmas time. Ultimately, this film will live or die based on word of mouth and the release date.

  4. I agree with Herby. In addition, while I think Sigmund & The Sea monster would bring in better as an update-remake…there is one, I do repeat ONE guilty pleasure that is …more on that in a moment.

    First, Land Of The Lost.

I don’t have a problem with the casting of Farrell. It’s not like they were going to make it serious. But y’know something? I don’t want to see in the film the family running away from the T Rex a hundred times, beating him to the cave where the dino cab’t even stick his craw in. I can see 100 mil being poured into it due to special effects…but y’know …when I was a kid…

As far as Sid Marty goes….I’d rather have been Dedre Hall’s sex slave/lackey in the Elektra Woman and Dyna Girl

    Yeah…. make that

  5. Nothing by Sid and Marty Kroft EVER blew chunks.

Although shows like Land of the Lost, H.R. Puffnstuf, Sigmund and the Monster, Lidsville and The Bugaloos (my personal favorite) worked better while stoned.

Hmmm, will somebody pass the oreos.

  6. No, it was definitely the 70’s. I remember a few years back when I first saw a teaser for the current show “Lost”. Knowing nothing about it, I immediately thought, “They’re doing a reboot of Land of the Lost? Sweet!”

Sadly, Will Ferrell running away from CGI dinos will make boatloads of money.
