Hellboy 2 Gets August 1st Release Date

I think Hellboy is one of the most underrated comic adapted films to date. The mythology behind the key characters are really rich and I thought the film executed the story really well. Were there some weaknesses? Sure, no debate there… but I thought over all it was a fun, witty, enjoyable ride and I can’t wait to see part 2, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army (but even I admit that’s a stupid title).

Word coming from the web right now is that a release date has been set… August 1st 2008.

Now, while I’m thrilled to see the release date set, I’m also a little surprised by the date. A summer release???? Does the studio in question really have that much faith in the project that they’re going to throw it into the summer mix? Wow… I think that bodes well for fans of the franchise at least a little bit. One good move for this film is that it’s cutting out the John Myers character. He was out of place and pretty useless in the first film, and apparently Hellboy creator Mike Mignola agrees. Horror-Movies also gives us this:

“He just didn’t fit into the story. We worked on getting him in there. But it would have been the case where he was the young naive guy, can we come back to that guy five years later where he’s turned into a bit more of a street-wise agent? For whatever reason, it didn’t quite fit.”

I think it’s a good move to get rid of him. There was nothing wrong with the performance that Rupert Evans gave in the role… it’s just that the character added nothing tangible to the film. Addition by subtraction if you ask me. I can’t wait to see this thing!

  1. I kind of think it’s too early for them to deside on a release date, but it’s not like they can’t change it and just might. But I think a summer release date is awsome. As badass as is sounds like this movie is going to be, it could very well be a huge summer blockbuster. And the first film helped develope a huge fan base beyond the comic book fans already.

Then I also agree with Jay, the Jay that made the first post that is ;p, that it would still be cool if it was a fall release like the first one, for nostalgia. Either way works I think.

As for John Myers being taken out, I don’t care. He was alright and served a purpus for the first film, but I agree he’s not needed for the next one. As long as they tye his story up in this one, like they say he dyed in a mission or somthing like that.

  2. Dear “Jay” at the top of this page,

please add something to your name. There are now 2 Jays on this blog and I’m the original. Stop trying to bite my style, poser.

    I’m just messin’ with ya….
but seriously, add something to you name.
Dont be offended, just the first letter of your last name after “Jay” will be fine. I just dont want people that I talk to on this site to think I’m making your comments. I know it’s silly and you probably dont care but it’s a simple request. Thank you in advance.

  3. Yeah, that’s all good Darren, but really, WTF did the guy DO in the movie? What did he do other than stand there and look dazed and amazed the whole time. Cut the fat and get rid of him, but it is a bit off in terms of continuity, seeing as how Broom hand-picked this guy to take care of his son, and now he’ll just be gone.

  4. I strongly, strongly disagree with you John, in regards to the John Myers character being ‘useless’ in the previous film. The character served a number of purposes in the first film. But that said, since the character’s primary purpose was to “be the audience” (so the nuts and bolts of the BPRD can be explained in exposition) ,to help Hellboy in having a ‘good guy balance’ and to have a slight jealousy between Myers and Liz.

The character does not need to be in the sequel, but to suggest his character served no point in the first film is just plain silly.
