Los Angeles Film Critics Call “There Will Be Blood” Best Picture

There-Will-Be-BloodIn the coming weeks there will be floods of critic association and various other bodies awards announcements for the best of 2007. But each year one of the most influential ones is the LA Film Critics. This year they’ve given their top prize to the new daniel Day Lewis film “There Will Be Blood” by calling it the best film of the year.

I’ve been dying to see this flick and I’ll finally get my first shot at it on Wednesday night (look for my review on Thursday). So having not seeing it yet, I can’t really comment on their choice other than to say it makes me even more excited to see it this week.

It’s still very early to call, but it looks like the two front runners for the Oscar this year may be There Will be Blood and No Country For Old Men. Personally, I’d give it to Transformers (kidding).

I am very much looking forward to putting together The Movie Blog’s best films of the year list late next week. Maybe we’ll call it “The Movie Bloggies”. Ouch… that’s a lame name.

    It’s appropriate that “There Will Be Blood” and “No Country for Old Men” are the front runners. These are the 2 best films of the year. I’ve seen “NCFOM” twice and “TWBB” once, and these films stuck with more than any other film released this year. They contain 2 of the greatest performances you’re likely to see for some time in Javier Bardem and Daniel Day Lewis. If these 2 actors are not locks for the oscars then theres something wrong with the system.

    Daniel Day Lewis is one of the very best actors of our day. He could play “Hitler comes to Sesame Street,” and it would be compelling.

  3. Drew says:

    TWBB – Technically perfect. The story sucks.

    No Country – Likely best movie of the year (though I still give it to Jesse James).

  4. Herby says:

    Haven’t seen either of these yet so I can’t comment. The Best fil I have seen all year, however is “I’m Not There” and I will be very dissapointed if Cate Blanchett does not win for best supporting actress.

    @Herby

    the thing that’s weird about that choice is that all those Dylan roles are by definition not performing performances.

  6. Rafa1215 says:

    Is that Burt Reynolds?

  7. Herby says:

    @ Rusty

    What do you mean by that? Cate’s performance was brilliant. So was
    Marcus Carl Franklin’s. They deserve recognition.
