Princess Bride 20th Anniversary Edition

This just blew my mind today when I saw it on the shelf.

The 20th Anniversary edition of the Princess Bride was released today, and though I am typically against buying a copy of a movie I already own, I must admit I was lured to own this movie. Just because of its cover.

The title “Princess Bride” is more stylized than its previous incarnations for a reason. When you look at the cover there is a younger Wesley and Buttercup, and mirror imaged is the Man in Black with Buttercup. As you rotate the cover over to see the mirrored reflection, the “Princess Bride” title REMAINS UPRIGHT. I made a rotating version if you want to take a look here

Im not kidding. Its called an ambigram which means the word can be read upsidedown as well as it is read right side up.

See, the cover of this movie just amazed me so much. And it has special features. I didn’t opt for the Buttercup or Dread Pirate Robert’s Editions that came out a while ago, so my copy is the original DVD release that has NO special features.

I am very visually oriented and distracted by ingenious elements like this. I applaud the designer.

Now it shall be mine!!

  1. Hello…
My special features list includes a portion called “A Twice Told Tale: The reversible storybook with tow versions of The Princess Bride story” I could not find anything in the dvd package or on the actual dvd. Can anyone tell me what this is supposed to be??

  2. I’m happy with the ‘bare bones’ one I have now, but I agree that the cover totally rocks.

It must be coincidence, but we just watched the movie a few weeks ago and I didn’t even realize it was the 20th anniversary!

Geek Alert: Anyone else notice the ‘Evil Horde’ He-Man figures in The Grandson’s room?

  3. Hmmmm…Sounds like this will lead to a TOP 10 or 20 DVD covers dont ya think John? My fav DVD covers are Transformers The Movie 20th Ann. editon, SAW 2-Disc SE, Nightmare on Elm ST ED, The Simpsons series DVDs, Labyrinth 20th Ann, Dark Crystal 20th, Hellsing Ultimate DVD, Fight Club 2-Disc, just to name a few lol

  4. The Dread Pirate and Buttercup Editions did have a second disk of features, which for the true collector I would recommend. However they didnt have this cover art, and to that I bow.

The features included on this 20th Anniversary Edition are “Princess Bride: The Untold Tales”, “The Art of Fencing, and Fairy Tales and Folklore”. The DVD also features a game, True Love and High Adventure: The Official Princess Bride DVD Game.

Not a lot, but still more than the DVD version I have which contains NONE.

  5. My wife has been nagging me to watch this movie with her, but I always thought it was a crappy chick flick. I was hoping that you were going to review it, but alas I was disappointed yet again. Honestly, Cary Elwes is a douchebag.

  6. This is what I miss about the glory days of dvd’s, yeah, there were glory days, and, yeah, they’re gone.

The attention payed to the packaging. Like the Memento and Fight Club dvds. They just made the special editions a little more special. It seems like, nowadays, they just slap a cut and pasted version of the movie poster and stamp a dvd.

Even the two disc special edition has pretty much gone bye bye, in favor of the later double dipping.

Hmmm, I’m sounding like a grumpy old guy. I used to walk ten miles in the snow……

  7. Nice cover. However, I hear the special features aren’t as good as the Dread-Pirate one (correct me if I’m wrong). Still, that DVD cover is looks good.

Speaking of double dips, this season is F’N DOUBLE-DIPPING CRAZY! Just today, I was in Barnes & Noble and found Close Encounters: 30th Anniversary Edition, with 3 versions of the movie! Damn, I already have the movie, but now I have to make up my mind if I want the option on seeing the other versions or be satisfied with what I got. Not to mention the friggin’ upcoming Evil Dead 3 disc version (1.Widescreen, 2.Fullscreen, 3. bonus features).

Back on topic, I remember seeing this film in school long ago, and enjoyed the hell out of it. Especially since it was my first viewing of Andre the Giant.

  8. It is a terrific cover. An added plus is that most of the time, and it grains me to say this, but when re-issues/double triple dips are done, the graphic designers are paid to do a crappy five minute job. Or something that looks tossed together (and the re-issue has zero extras or the same extras as before) and anyone could do on photoshop with a dunce cap on. It pleases me to see something like this.

Will I buy it? That’s another question. It all depends when my previous DVD (the “Special Edition’, not the “Buttercup” edition) is returned to me…all because I was watching my niece one evening, and I thought it would be a ‘good, fun’ film for her to watch…and something I wouldn’t mind seeing for the thousandth time. After a few months of “borrowing” it off and on, my sister and her daughter has “borrowed” it for almost a full calandar year now…maybe I’ll just buy it for the Xmas season, conduct a trade….or keep the new one for myself.

But I loved BOTH commentaries, the archive footage, everything.
    Everything including the film!
