New Cloverfield Trailer Online

By John - November 16, 2007 - 06:45 America/Montreal

The absolute silence of anything from Cloverfield has been suspicious to me. I’m not as impressed with the first trailer as a lot of other people were/are, and to be quite frank, I’ve seen nothing that would justify me getting even a little excited about it (although the concept of filming the entire movie from various handycams of the characters is a great one).

This version of the new trailer has popped up online. The quality is terrible, but as soon as you see a better one let me know and I’ll post it up here. Check it out.

I dunno. Any movie where the completely decimate major cities gets me all excited. I love “end of the world” on film stories. That would be enough to get me to see a movie. You throw in the possibility of monsters? That is pretty cool. That pushes it in favour of seeing the film.

The problem with monster movies though, is often the monsters all end up looking like bad CG. The closer they try to get them to look real, the worse it becomes.

Unless they keep the monster shown in bits and pieces and quick glimpses only.

Now all they need are strippers with hearts of gold in this and I would TOTALLY go see it.

oh! didn’t you hear? the monster is actually a stripper with a heart of gold.

  3. emilyk says:

so it’s like blair witch project only with special effects?

  4. John says:

    Hey EmilyK,

I was about to tell you that you’re wrong… but I can’t… because you’re not.

It’ll be like a blockbuster but without all the money shots. Imagine all the bits in Independence Day when they’re wondering wtf is going on then the bits when they’re talking about how to defeat the aliens, then the celebration but without actually seeing anything. It’s almost an extreme version of Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds.

I’m not going to bash the film until I’ve seen it and to be honest I was creeped out by the effective use of sound in Blair Witch (watch that in the cinema with two other people!). I understand telling a story from the human pov but I just don’t know how well a monster movie can be told without a little spectacle.

i got blasted on another forum for saying i didn’t think it was super promising.

I think the trailer was ok. You don’t get to see much anyway, but from what I can see, it’s just a bunch of people running around. Doesn’t tell me a damn thing.
