Dylan Walsh is ‘The Stepfather’

Yet another horror remake is in the works! (Followed by yet another uncontrollable Tourettes-like spasm from yours truly) Screen Gems Pictures is set to remake the original ‘The Stepfather’, and hire Dylan Walsh (of ‘Nip/Tuck’ fame) to play the menacing role that the great Terry O’ Quinn played in the 1987 thriller.
Moviehole gives us this:
Screen Gems is aiming the film as more of a Hitchcock-style thriller than the original, says Variety. It centers on a teenage boy (Badgley) who discovers his soon-to-be stepfather isn’t all he appears. In fact, the man who fell in love with his mother (Sela Ward), might be a psycho who murdered his previous family. Palicki would play the boy’s girlfriend.
Although I’m not too pleased about yet another horror classic being remade, I can’t deny the superb casting decision of letting Dylan Walsh play the homicidal killer. He always plays the meek, weak, and righteous characters and it would be great to see him tackle this role. The casting of Dylan Walsh is probably going to be the only reason for me to go to the theat…..oops, I mean rent this on DVD. ( I can already sense now, it’s not worth going to see on the big screen :P)

O’Quinn’s good in it, but I’d hardly call The Stepfather a “classic”. I think it’s a movie that could benefit from a remake.
I’ve never actually seen the original
“buckle up for safety!”
“jim!jim ogilvy!
call before you drop by next time”
“we are going to keep this family together…YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE.”
the stepfather is in my all time top ten favorite films list. It is so fucking good.
look i am not an anti remake guy. I take them as they come on a film by film basis but no o’quinn no film.
o’quinn makes the film. he alone. I like walsh but he is no terry o’quinn.
john you need to go and watch the original you will probably hate it after all its a great film but the one thing you won’t be able to deny is terry o’quinns performance.
quite possibly my favorite screen role of anyone.
he is fucking awesome
I have never seen the original either. O’Quinn is in it? That makes it worth checking out.
I rememeber the original. I also seem to recall that they came out with at least 2 sequels as well. I agree with Grundy that the movie, in my opinion, can hardly be classified as a “Classic”, but it was a kind of fun shake on the slasher genre. I may have to see it again, just to be sure. Of course, when the first episode of LOST came out, when I first saw Terry O’Quinn, the very first thing that came to my head was, “Hey! It’s that guy from ‘The Stepfather’!”
Oh c’mon Hollywood! Get a fucking original idea, why don’t you! And leave these cult or cult-classic movies alone!!!!!
