Also i've noticed many movies, and I wont say all because thats just not true, but many movies these days that are just 2 or 3 characters (ex. a couple) end with no survivors. And that too does not suprise me enough.
SPOILER BELOW!!!

I must say, I like your list and for the most part I agree BUT Come on who here gets tired of horror movies making it SO easy to to figure out whos gonna live/die. It gets a bit annoying to me...once in a while (probably about once a year) a movie will come out thats not predictable but jeez you would think they'd try to stay away from the stereotypes and try to suprise people with the ending!

Yeah, I figured you would count Joey as a death. I initially rented the movie for Jason Mewes so I was quite annoyed when Joey was killed in the movie. I ended up though liking it for it being a new direction in horror films that hasn't been done, or done enough. You can have comedy in horrors. Sure sometimes a horror film like the Saw films don't need humor, but there are some cases. The Scream movies employed some humor in their movies.

Also, I wanted to say thank you for crediting the Randy Meeks character with being the first real character to know what he's doing, and not following the stereotypes. He's the type of character that will come out of no where when the Lead is backed into a corner, and will help the Lead escape. Poor Randy just got caught in an unlucky situation, which i'm sure he knew could fully happen (he made the tape.)

I don't consider myself a "scholar", just someone who sees a lot of horror related films. I have been wanting to see the Saw film, but with how the last one turned out, I stayed away, and decided it was rent worthy. I couldn't stay away from The Mist though.. Every time I saw a sneak peek it was like being pulled forward in a "pie on the window" type situation. I wasn't the least be let down by it, but in fact though the ending was so great, because you don't see things like that happen often.

Hey Scott,

Yes, the tripper is one of my new fave slashers and yes I did see the deleted scenes where Joey lived....but he didn't make the final cut, so that's what counts.;)

Of course there are going to be examples where some of these don't apply, but I can assure you...they are far and few in between.

Also you got me thinking about the Scream trilogy...(my favorite trilogy I might add) Although, you can apply a lot the character types to the trilogy....not ALL these characters were used.

There was no "shover", prude or vice-abuser and the gimp made it to the end of the trilogy :P

You also sound like a true horror scholar!

Also, just now thinking about it. The perfect trilogy that uses all the characters you mentioned is the Scream films. You could see many of the deaths before they happened. In the movies like Scream, I usually sit with my friends in a game like mode, where we all pick a character, and when a person is killed, if it's the person we picked we get a point. It's not hard to score points. There are a lot of movies out there that made it hard to find out who was going to die. The Mist was a great film for just that reason.. It had you guessing up til the end. Movies like Final Destination are exactly the examples of what your talking about.

Serena, the "Vice-Abuser" doesn't always get killed. Technically the character "Joey" from The Tripper died in the movie, but only because they showed the Regan Killer chopping Joey and the hunter up, and never showed Joey again. If you watch the deleted scenes though, David Arquette meant for Joey to survive as he is seen coming back to the Hippy Fair area, looking for a beer. Joey, played by Jason Mewes is a pot smoker/drug abuser/alcoholic. In this case the Vice-Abuser was the only one besides the main female, and the cop, who didn't die.

Kristina,

Any self respecting horror fan would know that "the black guy" can survive in today's horror. check above comments and my intro for example ;) My doomed character rules are based off characters that still die in horror..regardless of time.
