Despite a couple of less than brilliant films recently, Ridley Scott is still one of the most recognized and respected directors out there. And despite constantly acting like a pompous ass, Russell Crowe is the single best and most naturally gifted actor working today. They’ve won Oscar’s working together before, so you’ve got to stand up and pay attention when they work on something together. This one is interesting.
We’ve mentioned before here some time about that the two were getting ready to collaborate on a new Robin Hood film… but it would be different. This time the movie would look at the story from the perspective of the Sheriff of Nottingham with him being the “hero”. Seems the synopsis is now a little more fleshed out and our friends over at MTV give us this:
The Sheriff, then, strives to do right while caught in the middle of two wrongs – on one side a corrupt and unpopular King who orders him to arrest outlaws, on the other the outlaw himself who threatens to rouse the public in popular anarchy. “[Caught between] the minority of haves and the majority of have nots,” Scott said.
The article talks about Nottingham actually being a faithful servant of King Richard who then is assassinated in the movie thus leaving Prince John to become King John (that has a nice ring to it) and Nottingham being the one trying to do right.
Producer Brian Grazer says “‘Nottingham’ is the ‘Gladiator’ version of Robin Hood”.
I’ll be honest with you I LOVE THE SOUNDS OF THIS. For some reason, different looks at classic stories appeal to me. It’s sort of the “what if” universe. Seeing characters in a complete new light will sometimes give us more of an appreciation for them. The neat thing is that they can also make us look at the characters in the originals or classic tellings in a different way too. So bring it on, I think this film sounds amazing.

I know that Crowe is likely to play the sheriff, but I’d like to see him as a power hungry half mad prince John. That would make room for Alan Rickman as the sheriff once more. Seriously, Rickman is a great reason (and the only reason) to go back and watch Prince of Thieves. He stole that show from Costner. What a great actor! :) *nostalgic*

Just make sure Crowe doesn’t lose his accent like Costner did. I know they are two different characters, but you get what I’m getting at.

I dunno if this will work. We’ve been raised on the idea of Robin Hood as the hero. Will audiences really want to root against him? Could be interesting. Could be A Good Year 2. Time will tell.
