Hilary Duff in Interracial Romance Drama

Hilary Duff, Ellen Burstyn and newcomer Evan Ross are set to star in ‘Greta,’ a film about a young interracial romance.

Movieweb gives us this:

Duff will play the title role of a waitress who falls for an ambitious cook (Ross) at the restaurant where they work. But as their summer romance heats up, she has to overcome the concerns of her grandparents (Burstyn, Murphy) about her boyfriend’s criminal past.

Being biracial myself, I always welcome movies about interracial relationships, but I’m actually really tired of seeing films ABOUT the STRUGGLES of being in an interracial relationship. Being half white and half black, I have dealt with different things, but since I’ve always been and will always be in interracial relationships, I can honestly tell you that majority of people don’t get offended by seeing two people together from different cultures or backgrounds anymore. In fact where I’m from, it’s actually rare to see two people of the same race together nowadays. (We’re not living in the fifties anymore!)

That’s probably why I like the show ‘Heroes’ so much. They actually have characters in interracial relationships and they don’t deal with the struggles of being in one. They’re just right for each other, and that’s all. Although racism still exists, (it will never go away) it’s not a factor that affects my life everyday. I would really like movies to actually do what Heroes does, instead of constantly writing the stereotypical “good wholesome white girl falling for a black guy from the streets” film. What are your thoughts?

well all i can say is that this movie theme has been played to death….”criminal past”…..the kid looks like he is 14…what did he rob a store for school supplies….i seen this guy in ATL…saw it on cable and well i got to say he just looks to young for my likings of a criminal let a lone a damn cook….shit i want some one to be atleast 25 who is cooking my fries and burgers hahahaha…btw hillary duff is a tool.

  2. Yeah, Hilary Duff…she’s waiting tables with a :)

While I hope she can show more acting ability than her Colgate choppers, when I saw the story on her new film a few days ago (back when the Community was up) I also had the same feeling as Big Samspon did, as well as Serena.

It’s tough to break new ground in this issue- although I did enjoy “Something New” from a year or so ago. But I don’t really understand why the non-white of the couple has to have a record. Because the character does- I wonder if there will be a scene or two in the film where his ‘hoodlum’ friends come crawling around, and make him choose to either stay with Duff in a low paying cook’s job or be the lookout in some drug buy five/dime for a few Benjis.
I wonder if there will be a scene where he’s highly tempted to make that choice, say no, and the next day, his fomer crew is dead or ready for prison.

At least I hope that’s not the sub-plot.

Yeah…my thoughts exactly guys….and I do agree this kid is WAY too young for this role. Darren, “Something New” was my fave movie last year! I’m glad you saw it..:)

Shouldn’t this be an after school special instead? I think I saw this episode in the eighties. Heroes is much more realistic of today’s dating world.

DL on Heroes has a record.

The fact that people still make a big stink over interracial dating is hilarious to me, especially since nobody walking th earth is purely black, white, whatever. We’re all basically related, and life is one big messy incestuous orgy. Deal with it.

So the black kid has to be a criminal and the white girl has to be wholesome? Wow… not exactly thinking out of the box with that plotline. It would be somewhat more entertaining if Duff played a trailer trash jailbird who falls in love with a well mannered black kid from the suburbs. Stereotypes are at their best, when played with and turned on its head. When that finally happens, we can then move on to the fact that North America isn’t all about black and white people… and Asian women. Yeesh.
