The shipmate girl pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean played a particularily small role. Now Zoe Saldana will be enlisted once again to serve on another ship. Also filling the shoes of a small role.
Scifi.com says:
Zoe Saldana (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) has signed on to play Uhura in J.J. Abrams’ big-screen adaptation of Star Trek for Paramount Pictures, Variety reported. The casting was rumored on the TrekMovie.com Web site.
In the original Star Trek TV series, Uhura—whose name means freedom in Swahili—was a member of the bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise who rose to the rank of commander. Nichelle Nichols played the Starfleet Academy alumna in the series.
One of the most iconic secondary characters in the original Star Trek series was Uhura. Despite being a very minor role with no real storyline hook, this character was an inspiration to the African American community, specifically NASA astronaut Mae Jemison and Whoopi Goldberg.
I find it interesting that they are giving a role to this character. Among the secondary stars the character of Uhura is at the bottom of that list. It was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that talked the original actress in sticking with the role that she wanted to quit because it was so insignificant.
Perhaps bringing attention to this character will have more fulfilling meaning in this pseudo reboot of Star Trek.
Do you think Uhura is “needed”? Are you hoping she has a more impressive role?

I know nothing about Star Trek, but I have a question: Is Uhura supposed to be kind of a bitch? Zoe Saldana always plays mouthy, angry bitches. Everything I’ve seen her in, from Pirates to Guess Who to Crossroads(yeah, I saw the Britney Spears movie, I have a little sister), she’s playing an angry bitch that can snap on you at the bat of an eye. My guess is, they’ve put her in this film to bring in some female audience. I don’t know many women who want to see a bunch of guys playing with their little space instruments.
LOL, obviously this is a post by a rabid NON-Trekkie.
Of course you have to have Uhura in the film (based on what we’ve heard so far).
Vic
Y’know what’s cute? Zoe Saldana played a trekkie in ‘The Terminal’.
Die Hard Trekkies or Trekkers or whatever the trek you want to call them would insist that ALL roles need to be represented here. Im not a NONtrekkie, I am asking if its required for any reason other than “she was in the original series”
I hear there is a movement to have Tribbles be the protagonists in this adaptation.
Maybe she doesn’t come along until later?
As for an actress playing…what was Kristina’s words? “Mouthy, angry, bitches’? If this Uhura is not an angry, mouthy bitch, and Zoe is on to play the role…that just sells me on the concept that she’s an actress and doesn’t always want (or need) to play a mouthy, angry bitch.
As for the character, yes, Uhura is important. Back in the OS, yes, she didn’t “do much”. But hey, when the guys were beaming down…do you think, maybe offscreen, she just…checked out the Capt’n chair now and then? I mean, she would be the senior officer on the bridge! More to the point, being smart, she said to herself:
1) ‘Yeah, that the crazy Captain go down and wrestle with some lizard monster thing that’ll suck your eyes out. I’, wearing this RED skirt and my ass aint going to be on a desert planet that’s going to explode!
2) What wrong with those guys, anyway? I’m on the bridge, give sweet talk, contribute, show off my legs and the boys go down on that planet and screw the green bitches, fool with Mudd’s harem…and what do I get? A Mirror universe.
3) Scotty never goes down either. Beamin’ up folks to and fro, he might be a miracle worker and all, but if the man don’t get on his own transport pad, there’s something about that.

No, seriously…what a better way to reboot- give Uhura some screen time, have her do stuff other than showing her thighs, and…sure…give her some action, be it zapping off the hand of a Romulan or what have you.
I’ll be OK if she shows a little thigh. I wonder If she into white guys?
Seriously, it will be a little better role than on the O.S.
the communications department definitely got a major upgrade.
In responce to the first few that remarked that Zoey only plays the cranky ,bitchy character. You are not speaking the truth.
I mean come on now, she has a lot of gentle parts like Guess who with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher. I have 4 more movies in mind but cant think of as of now. I just wish people that do not know what they are talking about would keep quiet-
Zoey is nice and has the warmest looking skin.
