Paddington Bear: The Movie?

paddington-bear.jpgLooks like another beloved character from popular childrens’ novels will be appearing on the big screen. According to Moviehole.net, Paddington Bear’s adventures will finally be depicted on film.

Moviehole gives us this:

Hamish McColl (“Mr. Bean’s Holiday”) is writing the screenplay for a live-action movie based on Michael Bond’s series of books for young children about a talking bear who’s adopted by a London family when they find him lost at Paddington Station, says Variety. The film is likely to be in the vein of “Stuart Little” – with Paddington as a CGI character.

Now I don’t see what the big deal is, but that’s because I never read the Paddington Bear books as a kid. ( I was more of a “Berenstein Bears” kind of kid) But, last night I had a few of friends over and they were surprisingly excited for this news of a live action film on the beloved bear from London. Since Stuart Little did so well, I don’t see this film not making any money. It seems like a good idea to me. So how many of you guys were Paddington Bear fans as a kid?

  1. I LOVE Paddington bear! I passed on my love for him to my daughter when she was small.

A live action movie? I don’t know….as long as they don’t bastardize it by making it modern. If they go the Charlotte Web route then maybe I can feel all warm and fuzzy about this project.

  2. I’m going with a “wait and see” attitude. On the one hand a Paddington Bear movie would be sooooo cool but the chances of a mess up are incredible. For every Stuart Little there’s a Garfield *gack*

  3. Was I the only one who LIKED the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie? I’m a huge fan of the cartoon and thought the movie paid homage to it well.

Oh, and my teacher in 1st and 2nd grade was a Paddington Bear NUT. She read us I think most of the books, and I believe I read them on my own too.

  4. I’m not sure how I feel about a CGI/live action film, but I loved Paddington Bear as a kid (I was born in 1975; I think he was pretty popular around the mid/late 70’s in the US). A friendly bear from darkest Peru, if memory serves, and he loved marmalade sandwiches.

If they trash him the way they trashed Bullwinkle, Underdog, and Alvin and the Chipmunks, though, someone needs to be fired.

And one more thing… leave Sherman and Mr. Peabody alone!!! (quiet, you!)

  5. ONCE AGAIN, Serena you have reminded me of a pice of my childhood that I forgot but love. I even remember his voice. Sounded kinda like an old man, but not. He just needed to gargle. This is when Nickelodian was actually worth watching. Between him, DANGER MOUSE,Darkwing Duck, YOU CAN’T DO THAT ON TELEVISION, and DOUBLE DARE, I don’t know what was better.

  6. Oh my God, PADDINGTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, no,no, they cannot do this to my Paddington. No! See this right here is raping MY childhood, and I won’t stand for it. Next thing you know, they’ll be doing a live-action version of An American Tail or Fievel Goes West!

  7. That would be cool. I would rather wee the effort go into a Big Teddy Ruxpin production though. Have the Doctor in there toofrom those 5min parts after the episodes. That would be cool.

  8. Serena, you’ve no idea how much of an institution Paddington is in the UK; everyone knows him.

If it’s released at the right time (when the kids are out of school), i’m sure it’ll make some money. But i’m going to have to wait and see this new CGI bear before i think it’ll be any good. Paddington is supposed to be quaint and charming, not cutting edge.

And it’s from the writer of Mr Bean’s Holiday? That’s, erm, not good news.
