New Street Fighter Movie Gets Director

The english language, as good as it is, just doesn’t have enough words to describe just how terrible the Street Fighter movie was. It was the movie that made me first realize that perhaps… just perhaps… Jean Claude van Damme wasn’t a great actor after all. But seriously folks, that movie just stunk to high heaven. I’ve never met a single person who liked it… and that’s a rare thing… usually you know at least ONE person who liked even the worst of movies.
Anyway, for some reason Fox has decided to go ahead and do another Street Fighter movie. That’s right… another one. I don’t think it’s a sequel (like I was hoping for a trilogy or something), but more of a “let’s pretend the other one doesn’t exist” for of film. While that is a good move, it’s still a horrible idea.
Componding the mistake, it looks like Fox has hired on director Andrzej Bartkowiak to helm the project. This is the same man responsible for giving us trash like DOOM and Cradle 2 The Grave… so why not give him Street Fighter since he did such a great job with that other video game movie. Ughh.
Justin Marks – penner of the upcoming “He-Man” and “Voltron” movies – did a polish on the script recently. The story apparently fixes on female fighter Chun Li and her journey for justice – as opposed to the first film which focuses on male fighter Col.Guile and his er, journey for justice.
I mean come on now…. is ANYONE going to go see this? Do any of you have even the slightest amount of interest in this project at all? Even a little? I’m as big of a fan of combat tournament movies as anyone… but if I could turn enthusiasm into energy, I couldn’t muster enough to fart for this one. (source: moviehole)

I’d rather see a movie about Zangeif wrestling bears outside of steel factories in Russia than a movie focused on Chun Li. I guess I’ll just have to wait another 10 years for them to do the next restart/remake.
I thought the point of remaking a movie was to capitalize off of the first one’s success. Who remakes a bomb?!
No one has even cared about the Street Fighter video games in over a decade, so I can’t imagine there’s going to be much of an audience…
Well ill proabably end up seeing it, though after the first street fighter movie i dn’t have high hopes, though if you watch the animated movies (especially the original one) you cans ee a street fighter movie CAN be done well >.> lets hope this is a mindless action flic
“though if you watch the animated movies (especially the original one) you cans ee a street fighter movie CAN be done well.”
Exactly, Wispy.
Ok …I hated this movie since the first photos came out. I heard they were making another one and i was shocked. Even thou it doesnt have the popularity it had in the ninties it still has strong fan base. However the writer is going the wrong direction. The main charaters were always Ken and Ryu, not guile, not chun-li, not Zangeif, or Blanka etc. Ken and Ryu have a deep back story because …they are the main charaters. Also the track record for video-game films is horrable. Did anyone see DOA? Yea thats right hardly no one saw that load of steaming bufflo turd. Ill tell ya what I write for these guys and direct it for Free just so I can have a decient story and enough money for good Hadouken FX.
the first Street Fighter had such fucking awesome quotes, though!!!!
“I’m gonna get on my boat, and I’m going up river, and I’m going to kick that son of a bitch Bison’s ass so hard that the next Bison wannabe is gonna feel it!”
Nothing against females, but fighting movies about a chicks kicking a whole bunch of dudes ass sparks absolutely NO interest in me. They’re always over-the-top and unrealistic. On a lighter note, I just saw the uncensored nude pic of that girl from that shitty “High School Musical”. FUCK YEA!
Can you believe that the original Street Fighter movie featured Raul Julia? It’s like Orson Welles in “Transformers” or Ben Kingsley in “Bloodrayne”. Amazing, legendary actor plus shitty B-Movie. Always an interesting combination.
But it also featured Kylie Minogue, which automatically makes it one of the greatest film ever.
@ Alec
Indeed, that movie had some totally quotable lines..
“Troopers, I just recieved new orders. Our superiors say…..the war is cancelled!”
How the hell do you cancel a war?
As for the previous Street Fighter film, I didn’t kno what was worse:
1) It was Jean Claude Van Damme’s worst film
2) Steven DeSouza wrote/directed it [he's usually a pretty good scribe]
or
3) What was Raul Julia’s last film?
I have heard rumors in the past that Van Damme might have returned ,perhaps with his UniSoldier co-star Dolph Lundgren in a DTV project. It never came to pass (count our blessings-or at least the two had other things to do) ; but…I have to call it like I see it.
Andrzej Bartkowiak- now, Gio, play fair- as a DOP his resume still impresses (The Verdict, Terms Of Endearment, Speed, Species…) but after helming that crapfest Doom …I don’t know.
But what do you think, Gio? I mean really? Think of all the thespians Andrel can attract!
Karl Urban. Steven Seagal. Jet Li. Russell Wong. Stupid non actor DMX. The Rock.
Hey— Jean Clude’s lookin’ pretty darn good!
[of course I'm kidding. I am not prophesying the end of the known world, dammit!]
oh, and WTF is my TEKKEN movie!
What’s that? The best video game adaptation, already done? Animated?
Hmph!
depends on who plays Chun Li, nothing gets me more on than a big boob hot asian chick.
What the heck? Am I the only one who really liked Street Fighter? I dont think they set out at the beginning of filming to revolutionize the action movie or video-game-movie genre. I think it set out to have over the top cheesy, lame, pointless action and explosions with really funny little one liners. And in that respect, they delivered exactly what they set out to deliver. I loved it.
@ Alec
there was some great quotes that stay with to this day
‘ when bison entered you villages it was the most important day of your life, you will always remember that day for me it was tuesday’
lol awesome, crap film though
street fighter is a tremendous film. I love it
