Tale of Two Spocks

One of the most interesting and fascinating things on my favourite TV Show Heroes, is the character of Sylar. He is just so ruthlessly evil and self serving, and then at the end of last season, in a rare moment of Sylar’s regret I almost found myself LIKING him. Or maybe I just like Zachary Quinto. So of course when I heard that he was cast as the younger counterpart to Spock, my own ears were peaked with interest. Today I found a clip online showing the two of them in a short interview on USA Today.

USA Today also says in the article:

Quinto and Nimoy have become fast friends since meeting briefly at San Diego’s Comic-Con sci-fi convention last month. They had more time to connect during a recent tour of the Griffith Observatory. That led to Nimoy inviting Quinto to his home for dinner.

Though there is speculation about how Abrams will make use of both Spocks in the film, no one is talking. “I honestly … can’t say,” Quinto, 30, says during lunch at the observatory’s cafe after bidding farewell to Nimoy.

But perhaps a tiny clue is revealed. “I think there’s going to be a sense of guidance through this film and beyond,” he says. In Nimoy, 76, Quinto has found a father figure of sorts.

Such a unique meeting of characters seeing the iconic Mr Spock meeting with his younger self, and as Nimoy says, the two of them certainly do have a similar look.

I was already excited about the new Star Trek film (mostly because its going to be something NEW) and with people like Quinto on board, I can’t help but love the idea!

Dr? Spock. Is he in the movie too? That’s a hat-trick of Spocks!;)

Leonard Nimoy’s voice is darker and deeper than Zachary Quinto’s voice so I hope they dub Zach’s voice with Leonard’s voice. Leonard’s voice all the way through the movie! Why not make a X-Men 3 and make Leonard younger with the computer? Maybe it would be more expensive than hiring Zach? I’m gonna go to the cinema see this new movie (if it’s released in the cinemas here in Sweden) because I’m a trekkie but I don’t think that it will be any good. :-/

You know what’s cool about this? You know some actors would act all pissy and scornful toward someone taking over “their” role, but he seems to be really supportive about the whole thing. I’m not into Star Trek at all, but I am impressed with this situation. Bravo.

    Nimoy is a class act.

I don’t know if I call any of this really new though rodney…if the heroes guy was playing a vulcan descendant of spock or something that would be new but he is playingh spock. The same old spock we already now just younger…..

its just a rehashing of the old characters…..exactly what they should be avoiding….

as much as they are calling this a reboot or whatever i bet you anything they are not going to do anything drastic with the characters.

obviously this isn’t a fresh do over as nimoy is playing spock too so these are supposed to be the same people that are in the original series.

    spock will be spock…

and I feel sorry for whoever is going to try and step in as james tiberius kirk. talk abotu huge shoes to fill…..that character is so ingrained into peoples minds they should have just based this on a whole new set of people….they are setting themselves up with comparisons to the original guys.

I really wish we were getting something new….a battlestar style revamp if they so desperately want to use the original characters name so bad but this is just same old same old if you ask me….

Given the track record of the last few series and movies Alfie, which had new characters, why not give this project a shot before shooting down?

ajaxlou you have taken me the wrong way…I am totally stoked about this film and I can;t fucking wait.

It is just that this site had gone on for ages and ages about this being a dead franchise and the need for something new ( i know john has anyway I didn’t know what rodney thought) …a complete pverhaul etc etc and then I saw rodney talk about this being something new which I don’t understand….

this heroes guy is not playing a revamped spock like apollo in battlestar..he is playing the spock we all know and love as a young man. they are looking for a new scotty, and a new kirk etc etc

this is nowhere near the revamp this site had called for so thats all I was questioning.

but while I am excited about I do think it is risky to try and revamp these iconic characters….

I totally disagree with the movie blogs stance on no one beoing irreplacable. there are some characters that I feel are so ingrained in the public conscience thta recasting is way to risky…

one of them is indiana jones…I still can’t believe people seriously think that nathan fillion has the same amount of x factor that ford had is his prime and could pull off indiana jones. The jones on the page was not what we got on screen. so much of that character is fords creation to recast him woul dhave been commercial suicide. Guys with ford heyday charisma don’t wallow in t.v. hell……I think ford long recent track record of shit has tarnished out memories of exactly how much on screen power the guy has and hopefully still has.

one of the other roles for me anyway is James T. Kirk.

It is a huge uphill battle to replace kirk and now they can’t even revamp him and let someone else do their own take.this movie is a prequel not a revamp so whoever steps in to play kirk has to play shatners kirk and I think that is a tough tough ask.

I am not against the film in anyway I am just surprised they have gone this way.
