Sam Raimi To Direct Clash Of The Titans?

Clash-Titans-PosterPoor Sam Raimi is a man with a lot on his mind these days. He’s pretty much got the right to write his own ticket… heck, Sony wants him to direct Spider-Man 4, New Line wants him to direct The Hobbit, and now apparently the folks over at Warner Bros. are trying to entice him to come on over and helm a Clash of the Titans remake.

Clash of the Titans is one of those icon movies for those of my generation. I think it might have been the first film to show me boobies on screen. Yay boobies! I also remember thinking the Medusa was the freakiest thing I had ever seen at the time. Anyway, back to Raimi… my friend Robert over at IESB did some snooping around and reported this:

How close are they to getting Raimi to sign on? Don’t know for certain but from what all sources are indicating no one else has been offered the Clash of the Titans project and that both Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. execs are willing to do anything to lock in Sam to a multi-picture deal. Besides, he’s worked with skeleton armies before so who better for the job?

You know what? I think Clash of the Titans is one of those rare prime candidates for a remake. The basic mythology and story are so good… a lot of younger people just plain haven’t seen it… and it’s one of those projects that would certainly benefit from the modern technology. Then again, I’m a sucker for fantasy films… but still. So I say “Yeah, go for it”! With Raimi? Yeah, why not. As long as Sam Raimi stays firmly committed to Boobies. Yay Boobies!

Isn’t it entirely possible that remaking this movie will do for Swords and Sluts what Xmen did for superhero movies?

In all seriousness though, I don’t know about remaking that particular movie, but Greek mythology is pretty rich for anyone to make a movie based on it. Particularly the whole Perseus angle.

  2. BaldSteve says:

NO! This doesn’t need a remake! The classic elements were there, the stop motion was beautiful. This movie is flawless. Calibus alone is amazing… Make another Mythology movie, I will line up to see it, just don’t call it Clash of the Titans. No need to reimagine, just grab a copy of Edith Hamiltons high school issued Mythology book and go to town, tons of Mythological stories to rape, (and boy do they need some raping… imagine including Pandoras Box into the mix?) just don’t remake it, hell make the God of War Movie and throw all of it into the mix with a pissed off War God. Just DON’T name it such a classic name. I can’t wait for the new Citizen Kane with Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider taking turns farting and babing talking about snow-sleds.

  3. Bishop says:

As a sort of P.S. technically speaking, did any Titans, in fact, Clash in this film?

  4. BaldSteve says:

Nope, no clashing of any Titans occurred. They woke the Krakken up, he swam around, got horny and wrecked a village. No clashing of Titans

  5. Phil Gee says:

Great points, which is why i think a remake could work. Instead of doing a literal re-shoot of the original, explore a new story with the same basic concept. Doing an epic tale about how the simple petty jealousies of the Gods result in changing and destroying human lives has so many possibilities. I’m game for it.

But by all means, give us some more Kraken, Medusa, and Pegasus action.

  6. Rafael says:

What if John’s favorite director made this? I’m talking about Peter Jackson. :)

  7. SNOW37 says:

I love the stop motion in this and I don’t really think it needs to get remade, even if it is with Raimi. Also, I believe medusa’s head clashing with the krakken is where they got the title.

  8. Bill Clay says:

If Raimi accepts, maybe we’ll find out that instead of slaughtering all the winged horses as in the original, Calibos will have been disfigured for trying to steal money to pay for medicine for his sick kid. And there won’t be any boobies sadly, but Andromeda will whine a lot that Perseus is off having adventures instead of attending her oracle readings. And (fingers corssed!) will see at least one extended musical montage wherin Perseus walks through Joppa in his invisibility helmet and we laugh at all the silly events that occur.

Raimi doing Clash would be fucking Routh!

  10. Paul says:

I like Raimi, and I also admire Ray Harrihausen’s work…. but I don’t think such a classic should be remade… like every other movie….. Next up will probably the blob… followed by the thing…. and creature from the black lagoon…….. ok maybe those could be cool…. but my point… Clash of the Titans was a classic that should not be remade… there are way too many remakes right now, and Raimi could think of something better rather then to remake that movie…. despite his love for Harrihausens work… (ie; watch spiderman… the tv’s in the backround…)

  11. Paul says:

I like Raimi, and I know he has a thing for Ray Harrihausen Movies..(Look on the t.v’s in spiderman and other movies… you have various other moveis)…. but Clash of the Titans is too much of a classic…. too many remakes right now…. Wonder when Tim Burton is going to remake Titanic…….

  12. Sir Jig-A-Lot says:

as long as he has a great scipt and a talented ensemble cast, the remake has my blessing. Clash would greatly benifit from 2day’s animatronics & FX. maybe get Stan Winston in on it.

  13. Kman says:

i dont undertsand why they dont take another great tales from the greek myths and turn it into a film istead of clash of the titans which was awesome and still remains awesome. The story of prometeous would be awesome, i mean the the guy created mankind in the myths and he was awesome

  14. It should be said that in in Clash there are really only two boobie shots and one taillight.
The first breast is Peresus’ mom breast feeding him as a baby. The second is a special effect (Medusa, part snake, part topless woman who has a reptillian face, fangs and living snakes for hair) and then finally a brief view of Judi Bowker’s rear. Chicks get Harry Hamlin in a toga. So, don’t read this wrong folks. National Geographic couldn’t be any cleaner.

While the film was ballyhooed in 1981 because of the last Harryhausen FX stop motion film, the film was a throwback to sci-fi/fantasy cinema of the 50′s and 60′s. I would agree that the best bet is not to remake Titans (good lord, we’d be forever on who gets to play the Bergess Merideth role, much less Laurence Oliver’s Zeus…) but even so, I don’t want the friggin Greek Gods just standing around up on a stage with the acting talent thinking that this is a film based of the play Opideus Rex.

Would Raimi go near it? Would XENA show up for a cameo?
In fact, y’know what? Screw Titans. Give me a Xena Warrior Princess flick. Because in the end of the day, the option is this:

    Swiss, Pepperjack or Cheddar?

Clash of the Titans is my most favortie movie of all time and I remember when LotR came, I said to the other chaps, DAMN…if they could remake CotT with this kind of technology I would kiss the director and execs!! Well…as much as I want to see this film brought back to life with the superior effects we can make now…I am stoked man!!! I am definately going to keep tabs on this one!

  16. Jojo says:

Why don’t they start remaking BAD movies instead of messing with classics that don’t need to be remade.
I mean if they remake a bad movie and it becomes good then maybe they’ll stop messing with the classics.
I heard they’re going to be remaking Bill and Ted’s excellent Adventure but no word yet on weather or not if Keanu will do a cameo though.
    Don’t touch the classics people…lol
Well maybe Big trouble in little china….LOL
