Michael Bay Dumps Transformers 2

Bay-No-Transformers-2Now this comes right out of nowhere. As you all know by now, Paramount and Dreamworks have just made the decision to release their films exclusively on the HD DVD format and leave Blu-Ray out of the game (I hate the HD format wars). Well, apparently director Michael Bay HATES this decision, and has just said he’s not going to do Transformers 2 because of it.

Bay writes this on his site:

“I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!”

Who the hell does Michael Bay think he is??? Look, I’ve defended Bay for almost 2 years now, and I for one totally understand the frustration he must feel about the whole Format civil war going on… I really do. But what DVD type Paramount puts the movie out on is really none of his business and has nothing whatsoever to do with his job… which is to direct the movies. Does going exclusively with HD DVD effect Bay’s ability to direct the next Transformers? No! Then he shouldn’t be making statements like “No Transformers 2 for me”. The two are totally unrelated.

And guess what Michael… a lot of studios are picking sides. Yes… I hate it too… but you know what… fine. Pretty much EVERYONE had written you off before Transformers. You won some fans back with the solid job you did with that franchise… that franchise gave your dying career new life. And for you sir to make a statement like that JUST BECAUSE OF WHICH FORMAT PARAMOUNT IS GOING TO RELEASE THE HD DVD ON is nothing short of asinine.

Hopefully Bay smartens up once the initial anger of the HD DVD thing passes. If not… then fuck him… go make Bad Boys 3.

  1. i think michael bay certainly has the right to be pissed.

and john, i think you were way off when you said his career was dying off before the success of transformers. he had only one movie (the island) that did make tons of cash, and even that did fine thanks to overseas box office.

anyways, his statement about not doing tformers 2 didnt seem official or anything, he just wants a big paycheck. fine, whatever, the studio is stupid anyways for going exclusive.

  2. exactly kristina im baffled about how many people got upset over this……and jay ur right about the crazy fanboys….”insane, wahh i hate michael bay why is he doin transformers, wait hes not doin part 2….argg outrage!!” a wasted post…sorry john, but it was.

  3. So he was just throwing a little fit then? What a silly goon:)

For the record, i hope he doesn’t do Transformers 2. It’s going to get old really quickly through the same specs.

  4. ”Last night at dinner I was having dinner with three blu-ray owners, they were pissed about no Transformers Blu-ray and I drank the kool aid hook line and sinker. So at 1:30 in the morning I posted – nothing good ever comes out of early am posts mind you – I over reacted. I heard where Paramount is coming from and the future of HD and players that will be close to the $200 mark which is the magic number. I like what I heard.

As a director, I’m all about people seeing films in the best quality possible, and I saw and heard firsthand people upset about a corporate decision.

So today I saw 300 on HD, it rocks!

So I think I might be back on to do Transformers 2!

    Michael Bay”

  5. Right

I get what you’re saying, and my analogy was off i do admit with the points you bring up and you’re right, it’s not exactly like the actual situation. I simply created this analogy, because Paramount is a distributor of Bay’s product (i just want to note i’m not saying Bay owns Transformers, just that since he’s making it, it’s his product, just so there’s no confusion in that line), just like your host is the distributor of your product.

Also i want to add this little bit, you’re right that people will still be able to see it at the movie theatres, However, according to many movie makers, the real money when making movies, is in the dvd sales, quite simply, more people buy dvd’s then go to the theatres. (If you want to correct me on this, feel free, i’m going from what i’ve heard from interviews from directors)

However, you do make good points of how this is different and I somewhat see your point of view. (I’d after all really love to see a transformers 2 to be honest, i really liked the first one)

I still disagree with your distaste of Bay’s decision.

Because really, i’ll also add this to the discussion, if paramount wishes to make the decision to only to go with HD DVD, it’s fully within their rights. Likewise, if i wish in the future not to do buisness with Paramount because of this and not see or buy their movies, i would be within MY rights, and just the same, if Michael Bay doesn’t wish to do buisness with Paramount and not make their movie, it’s fully within HIS rights. I just feel like if he dislikes the decision this much, i dont feel like I have to right to judge him for his opinion of the situation.

PS: I know this isn’t really related, but i’ve never posted here, despite coming here quite a few times, and since i’m posting now, i’d just like to congradulate you on your movie “Prince of peace, god of war” and how it’s been chosen to be shown at the San Diego Film Festival. I saw that little trailer you made a few months ago, and i must say, i’m really interested to see it. I’m not sure if you have a distributor yet, but when you do get it distributed on dvd, i’m really looking forward to buying it. (I’m not trying to humor you btw hehe, i really do think it looks like quite an interesting film)

  6. Alfie,

My point wasn’t in saying he makes good movies just successful ones. What person A thinks is a good movie and what person B thinks is a good movie is purely subjective. People can decry his films as shit all they want but what it really comes down to is do people go to see his films? Yes they do. I was just pointing out that his career really didn’t need resurrecting when he took on Transformers.

  7. last i checked, Hasbro owned the Transformers. Paramount just licensed the property. surely the moneyhungry toy giant cannot be happy that their product isnt getting the widest possible exposure. ergo, lost potential toy sales. i’ll bet @ the end of all this the buck stops with them.

  8. Hey Seb,

I appreciate the point you’re trying to make, but your analogy has a couple of major holes.

First of all, I own The Movie Blog, the hosting company doesn’t
Paramount OWNS The Transformers, Michael Bay doesn’t

Secondly, your analogy about blocking who can see my site doesn’t apply. Paramount gave Transformers a full theatrical run. AND they are releasing it on regular DVD. So there isn’t anyone who won’t be able to see it. Period. your suggesting that they “cut in half” the people who can see it is just wrong.

Thirdly, if The Movie Blog belonged to the host company, and they just hired me to write content for the site, then it’s none of my damn business who the hosting company shows the site to.

Fourthly, if everyone on the planet was seriously doubting my ability to run a blog at all, and then this Hosting Company choose to give me the opportunity to run a great site like The Movie Blog (tongue in cheek) that gave me some credibility back, I’d show a little more loyalty to them than stomping my feet like a child and say “Do it my way or I’m going home with my ball”.

So, I appreciate (honestly) the analogy you were trying to set up, but your analogy isn’t anything like the actual situation.

  9. Hey John, I have a question for you. If suddenly your host company for the movie blog suddenly decided that they’re going to block all IP addresses for eastern america, and only let ip’s from the western half. And by doing so, reducing the amount of people that can see your site to half, would you not care? Would you just take it? Or would you be furious, and change host company?

I’m willing to bet you’d give them a piece of your mind and go shopping for a new host the very second they told you.

So why is it so wrong for Michael Bay to say no to paramount and tell them to go to hell for essentially cutting down by half the people that can see his movie?

You have a website, he makes movies, they’re both forms of entertainment.

    Just think about that please.

  10. No one is complaining that Bay may not be back. I could care less if he’s back to direct T2 (I’d like him to, but another person could do the job).

What bothers me is Bay throwing a fit, stomping his feet and saying “if you don’t do it the way I like, I’m taking my ball and going home” over an issue that has NOTHING to do with him. He directs…. period. The movie belongs to the studio. The business decisions belong to the studio. They didn’t cut his funding… they didn’t tell him what to do… they just did their jobs that have nothing to do with him.

insisting that Paramount bows to Sony is nonsense, and would just stretch out the whole DVD format battle.

    That’s the problem.

  11. Kristina,
I was about to post the same thing.
    Good job…

The thing I find hilarious is all the same geeks that were whining and bitching and crying to high heaven about Bay getting the job in the first place are now whining, bitching and crying to high heaven about Bay possibly not returning for the sequel.

I guess a fanboy cant be happy unless he’s pissed off about something.

I say this as a proud geek/fanboy who is not oblivious to our many glaring faults.

    Bottom line,
If Bay comes back… good deal. I’ll welcome him with open arms.
    If not… it’s his choice.

Either way, I’m still seeing Transformers 2.

  12. @kman I don’t get what you are saying? is clint eastwood the only other director around? thats funny i thought there were hundreds of directors out there but apparently there is only eastwoon and bay……

bay is good with action but would anyone seriously complain if we found out someone like james cameron was doing the next one? I know he won’t be but all I am saying is there are other directors out there who can shoot action so don;t worry about it….

if bay wants to walk, which I doubt, then fine.

@chris…..list all those dollars signs all you want ..that doesn’t change the fact that you just listed a list of some terrible terrible terrible films. Is he successful?? yes but so is 50 cent and his music is shit so don’t bother trying to prove a point with dollars signs because that doesn’t change anything.
I could write a list of films this year that have made a lot of money that are terrible but would that change anything??

and as for the civil format war …well I don’t see anyone up in arms about fox and mgm only going with blu ray??I have an hd dvd player but I am not pissing and moaning that I won;t be able to get robocop am I.

I don’t see anyone going crazy mgm, fox or sony for their choice so why is paramount the bad guy all of a sudden??

its business and paramount have made a business decision and michael bay just aint going to be powerful enough to change it……I don’t see him complaining about bad boys only being out on blu ray so spare me the “its about the fans” bullshit. hes just worried about his points in the dvd sales.
this is all posturing and grandstanding.

If you seriously can’t live without a hi def transformers guess what??

you are going to have to buy a HD DVD player and if you don’t want to then get a hankerchief blow you nose and shut the fuck up…..

  13. lol @ joseph

anyway im surprised that john actually took this serious…..”no blu-ray? no transformers 2 for me” and you thought he was serious? wow, seemed like just talk to me….bay is a fair director at best….and in my humble opionion he didn’t do it justice….a medicore movie only because of the action…..if its true good riddance

  14. To Anyone:
    .
Can somebody explain to me why:
    .
    a) Why not release movie on all formats like the old days?
    (Beta and VHS and Laserdisk)
    .
    or
    .
b)Come up with 1 standard exceptable by all, like the old days?
(Wait for movie on TV makes way for Video, Beta makes way for VHS, VHS makes way for DVD, ect)
    .

  15. Steve:

With all consideration, if I am willing to stick with regular DVDs until there is Digital Distribution, do you really think 1080p downloads are a concern of mine at present, or even 720p? I said, ‘I’m just gonna skip HD discs and go from DVDs to Digital Downloads”. That means, until Digital Downloads are available, I am staying with DVDs. I did not suggest that on demand 1080p downloads are currently available.

I do not want Microsoft DRM or Sony’s DRM or anyone’s DRM on my movies/discs. I think you were using that as a point against Digital Distribution, but I personally see that as an additional reason to not invest in HD-DVD or Bluray since they would then have the DRM built right into the discs, just as they include what they can with DVDs. I think avoiding DRM online is easier than on a disc because it’s burned into the disc forever, but can easily be removed from code.

The friends house question you had is likely solved by that fact that the size of storage mediums like flash drives will be of no consequence to movies by the time they do have working models for Digital Distribution. Which that also takes care of the burning to disc question you brought next. As far as displaying my movie collection, that’s actually not how I show off for friends or strangers. My movie collection is tucked away in my house like one would use a pantry or closet. Typically, only my Fiance or myself go in there to retrieve movies.

I respect your wishes for 1080p downloads in under 15 mins. But they are simply not my prerequisites and I don’t need 1080p that way you feel that you do. Please do enjoy your Hi-Def content, and I hope your HD civil war ends. It’s simply not my war and I will not be concerned with changing mediums from DVD until the downloads have taken their place. Who knows, maybe the download option won’t ever occur and I’ll move to an HD option down the road. But I don’t need 1080p, so I don’t care now.

    -Calviin

  16. please! like Bay is the only guy in town who could pull off a Transformers sequel. bring on Uwe Boll Unrated Director’s Cut Special Edition of Transformers 2:The Revenge Of Lazerbeak

  17. Jon, Blu-Ray currently holds a 2:1 sales advantage over HD-DVD. Who is to say that Bay isn’t getting some money from the DVD, HD format releases of Transformers, if I was getting a cut of the video sales and my company cut out 2/3 of my potential profit I would be pissed as well.

And for all those that are saying Bay’s career needed reviving, he had what? one film that completely flopped? Yeah he might have been the laughing stock of the online movie community but outside of your little world here the guy makes movies that make money.

    Bad Boys $141M worldwide
    The Rock $335M worldwide
    Armageddon $553M worldwide
    Pearl Harbor $449M worldwide
    Bad Boys II $273M worldwide
The Island $162M worldwide (probably the only film of his that lost money)

Yeah this guy is shit. If I was an investor I would want him making a movie for me as long as it was produced with someone who could reign the guy in (Spielberg, Bruckheimer, etc…).

Jon I understand your frustration with the format war but to call the guy out because he has made a stand is kind of silly.

  18. Here’s what it says right now in the forum, straight from the administrator of Bay’s forum.

“I spoke to Michael a few minutes ago.

He said he just wants people to know that we should be able to view his movies in the format of our choice. Period.

    Nothing more, nothing less.”

Doesn’t say whether he’s “quittting TF2”. Honestly, I think some of you guys are going all nuts for nothing.

  19. You know, it’s funny how agitated some people get because someone didnt do everything they wanted him to do. Yes, Im a bit disapointed to see no Bay for T2, but you know what..I’m going to be say “fuck him” just because he didnt entertain every little fanboy wish I wanted him to do. It’s his career. Not ours. As far as we know, this could be the best decision for him. For all we know he could end up making something completely amazing instead. And what the hell is the point of having an opinion if you are going to bitch about it instead of doing something about it. I’m sure a lot of you say “people dont have the right to bitch about politics if they dont vote”..well this is the same thing (i can see the “no it isnts” coming soon) he wants people who support either sides to able to see it the way they wanted it and he said i dont like this im leaving and you know what, I give him props for it.He had balls.

(plus, these are just B.S. comments on his website..its not like its set in stone yet..)

  20. @John

what business is it ours why he drops out of his job for, what if he feels strongly about the issue, do you think its only right if some drops out of doing a film just because of legit reasons directly connected to the film, this issue indirectly affects it so why not. dropping out of the film is a symbol and he uses his position in T2 as leverage of power why not.

    @Alfie
who did you expect to direct transformers clint eastwood, so we can get optimus talking about dark days where he was raped by jazz.

No bay was a good choice, but he did a good job not great but good

  21. Whoa there John, calm down a bit.

Yes, this doesn’t affect Bay’s ability to direct movies, but obiously it limits his movies audience in the home enterainment market.

Personally I support his decision. I guess he’s hoping to make Paramount change their mind by saying this (obviously), so if he succeeds well then more power to him.

I hated Transformers anyway (different matter) so I don’t really care if he directs the 2nd one. But a lot of people, probably including you after seeing how you upset you got about this, do care.

  22. no one is attacking sony for only releasing on one format…..just because blu ray is their technology they get a pass when really they are doing the exact same thing.

this is business…paramount have made their decision and they are not going to chnage anything due to bay dropping transformers 2….this is hilarious….

transformers was ahit a despite bay not because of bay……..

fuck bay …. transformers would have been a hit regardless of who made it…and to be honest it probably could have been even better in ther hand of someone capable of feeling a real human emotion…..

  23. someone should tell him i personally hate buying a dvd of one of his movies only so that he can put out a special edition or directors cut of that same movie a year later to make me buy it again.

  24. Look guys there’s no reason to take sides. Making movies is a business. I say let the studios fight over these format wars. They just need to make sure they provide me with the regular dvd’s I’ve been getting all along. If any of these studios don’t budge on their formats – I don’t care. I like the quality of dvd’s i’m currently getting now. In about two years or so I can get a dvd burner that plays both formats. I can wait.

  25. Yo Calviin,

Digital distribution won’t happen for real for at least ten years. The backbone to deliver a 30GB 1080p video with uncompressed audio to your house just doesn’t exist yet and won’t for a real long time. I mean, cable companies can’t even broadcast a single 1080p signal and you’re already talking 1080p on demand? Microsoft can keep their crappy 720p downloads, until they can deliver 1080p, there will be a need for hard copies.

And do you really want Microsoft’s DRM all over your downloads?

What if you want to bring it to a friend’s house? Tough. Want to burn it? Too bad. Like to display your movie collection? No dice.

You can keep your series of tubes for your movies, I’ll stick to discs until they can get 1080p to my house in under 15 minutes and I have fair-use rights to what I download.

And that ain’t gonna happen for a long while.

  26. John~

Normally, I agree with most of what you say. However, in this situation, I must respectfully disagree. I agree that these two things have very little to do with each other, but they do connect together. First, not everybody has seen Transformers, so not everyone is giving Michael Bay a second chance. Many people I know have refused to go to the theatre to see it, and instead are waiting for the DVD release. So there is a whole section of the country who will not be able to see the movie because of which overpriced DVD player format they chose. Secondly, you say that the only reason Michael Bay has been given a second chance is because they “let” him direct this movie. I disagree. Studios have “let” Bay direct movies in the past, some of which he thought would resurrect his career, but he still failed those movies. In this case, he totally succeeded in directing a thoroughly entertaining movie. Therefore, he resurrected his own career because he did a good job on the movie. Therefore, everything that happens with the movie from here on out affects him in some way. Just because it’s not directly affecting his paycheck does not mean he has no interest in the way the studio releases the movie. I think he makes a good point when he says people have gone out and spent a lot of money on a DVD player that now will not be able to play his movie, and if they want to watch it, they have to go buy another expensive DVD player until the format war is over. Now, having said all of that, I totally agree that refusing to do Transformers 2 is a little ridiculous. I just disagree with those who say he has no right to stand up for what he believes.

  27. Perhaps he had some sort of personal stake in blu-ray and now hes pissed that a movie he worked on (and netted upwards of $700 world wide) will not be coming out in that format.

Im doubt this is all for him and transformers, he just sounds a little pissed and shooting from the hip.

Put it this way, he wont turn down the oppertunity to direct one of the biggest sequels in movie history over this. He might try to use it as some sort of leverage to get more money or points on the back end, but he wont walk away over it.

And if he does? Big deal, there are plenty of talented directors that can pick up where he left off.

  28. While my overall prediction is that HD DVD will win between the “war”, the overall cage match will be won by regular DVD. In any case, it is beside the point.

If Bay says, “I want to direct something other than Transformers 2”, regardless of anyone (including myself) thinks of the picture…let him go, Paramount. Serious- turn him loose, let him do whatever suits his fancy.

Get someone else. It’s that simple. Anyone in his (or her) right frame of mind will say…’Bay walked…watch me step up’. Seriously. Don’t bug me on “who” can replace Bay. People can debate that until hell freezes over. The studio will say ‘We love ya, Bay, you helped give us a hit, you don’t want the sequel for whatever reason, even the most retarded ones, we will respect that and wish you well.”

And someone, maybe even Spielberg himself, makes a phone call to the next person in line. Simple as that. They can and will find someone. If Bay changed his mind and was shooting off the cuff, so be it. But if actors can be replaced….so can full of themselves ego filled directors.

  29. Sorry guys, I meant that Phoenix’s statement that the movie won’t be filling up the entire 30 GB is NOT true. Just wanted to clear that up.

  30. Actually Spidey1703, most Blu-Rays now use the AVC MPEG-4 codec as compression. Yes, some still use MPEG-2 compression (like Immortal Beloved). Blu-Ray also uses Dolby TrueHD as an audio codec (i.e. see Ghost Rider, Letters from Iwo Jima, Stomp the Yard, Immortal Beloved, etc). But the problem lies in the soundtracks that the studio apply Dolby TrueHD. Warner Bros still uses 16-bit tracks when the full dynamic 24-bit master is available (The Departed and 300 are examples of this). Warner Bros is also known to use dialogue normalization on their TrueHD tracks which limits the dynamic range a little bit.

As for Phoenix saying that the movie won’t even use the entire 30 GB of the HD-DVD is true. Most new releases, if not all, almost push the HD-DVD to the limit. It’s Blu-Ray that still needs a movie to push it’s data rate to the fullest. I think the closest that pushed Blu-Ray to the max was both of the Pirates films.

  31. I like the way Bay stands up to the Man. I am not a fan of his movies but I think a lot more people should demand more. Just take a look at his blog site, it looks awful when you visit it with microsoft explorer.

  32. Hey Bert,

Yeah man. tons of people wrote to me about it.

And no… taking a stand isn’t a good thing when you’re crossing two different issues, and when you’re taking a stand on the wrong thing.

Trying to get the studios to prolong putting out 2 versions will only PROLONG this stupid format war. It’s got to end with a decisive winner. The sooner all the studios pick a side, the sooner a winner will start to emerge and the consumers will win.

  33. I think the problem here is that Paramount/Dreamworks just prolonged the format war/civil war. Universal was the only studio exclusive to HD-DVD (the Weinstein Company is currently in talks going format neutral) before Dreamamount decided to also exclusive. Before yesterday’s announcement of the Dreamamount HD-DVD thing, almost all the studios were either format neutral or with Blu-Ray. Microsoft or Toshiba then paid Dreamamount $150 million to prolong the war because I think they were desperate. The funny thing here is that Dreamamount is part of Viacom which in turn owns Blockbuster. This format war was almost up until yesterday which I think is what pissed a lot of people off.

  34. “And who in the sphincter of hell Paramount think they are? Why can’t I have the best picture of the year and one of my favourite movies in my preferred format, which by the way has a better quality? And don’t give me that crap that the customer doesn’t notice, I’m sure 20GB more makes a hell of a difference, without mentioning the extra stuff you can put in there.”

Actually, the early Blu-Ray releases (and many of the current ones) use the older codec MPEG-2. Pretty much every HD-DVD manufactured uses either VC-1 or H.264 video compression, which are both more advanced than MPEG-2 and require less space on the disc. Not to mention HD-DVD supports Dolby Digital Plus at a higher bit-rate and full Dolby TrueHD.

  35. BUT JOHN, isn’t it a good thing that a big star hollywood director finally stands up to all this hd-format-war nonsense, maybe the studios will finally wake up to the stupidity of making people choose. Isn’t it about time some big name took a stand??

Maybe this is a good thing!!

  36. This is the best news I’ve seen in a while. I thought Transformers sucked, and Michael Bay’s awful direction was a big factor. Even if this got put on a say, Roland Emmerich or Renny Harlin, it would be better. Removing Bay from the franchise actually would make me give Transformers 2 a shot, and perhaps even actually like it.

So stop harrassing Bay! I want a good Transformers movie!

  37. I think a lot of people are missing the point here:

    1) Michael Bay only has a bolstered career right now because they let him direct The Transformers. Saying he won’t do a Transformers 2 now because of what DVD format Paramount has chosen is like saying he won’t do Transformers 2 because of the type of cupcakes they serve in the Paramount cafe.

    2) Most studios are picking sides here. If more studios just kept putting out movie on BOTH formats, it’ll just prolong this stupid format war. This war needs to END with a decisive winner. Also, if studios kept putting out movies in both formats, make no mistake about it, it’ll drive the prices up.

  38. Hey, Gil, you’re both 100% correct and a total tool at the same time!

They should ALL release movies on both formats. But don’t forget, Sony is playing this game hard by pushing FOX and of course, all of its own movie studios, like Columbia, MGM et al to ONLY support Blu-ray.

Oh, and on the subject of “20gb is a lot more”. I’d wager the movie doesn’t use up the full 30gb capacity of the disc, even with extras (if there are any).

You “F**K you” rant is just silly though, this is a war over money, don’t expect anyone to give in easily.

  39. no need for a format war let the consumers choose. i’ve got a ps3 and 1080 phillips 42″plasma and after seeing kingdom of heaven(directors cut) I LOVE IT!!

Blu ray for me for the time being!!!!!!!

i am pissed off i can’t have transformers in hd tho :(

  40. This is stupid on so many levels. So what if it’s released on blu-ray or HD to him? He is still getting paid no matter what. I’m guessing Bay saying I’m not directing Transformers 2 is a way to get the studio to go with blu-ray which is not going to work.

  41. Bay has an opinion, and a choice, he’s made it and has every right to – why are you so infuriated by this?

So bloody what if it has nothing to do with ‘his job’ it is a by product of his job and if he wants to say no to paramount over a dicision he disagrees with.

The industry is getting f8cked over by this stupid war, and movie companies going exclusive with differnt formats, I think a Director has every right to voice his opinion and take his own action on said opinion.
I for was happy to see he’d done it and it would be nice if others followed suite, maybe then these stupid companies would just release stuff on both formats and stop pissing everyone off.

  42. Hey KMAN

    You asked:

“Why can he says what he wants to, hes not hurting anyone”

Because he’s not just SAYING things. if Bay came out and said “I really don’t like this decision” then that’s totally fine. But he didn’t just do that… he dropped out of T2 over something that has nothing to do with his job.

Good luck Bay… Universal, Sony and soon WB have all chosen a side already. Now Paramount and Dreamworks have too. You’re running out of studios that you can make movies with.

  43. Hey Gil,

    You asked:

“And who in the sphincter of hell Paramount think they are?”

Ummm… they think they’re the ones who own the movie. They also think they’re the ones responsible to make the decision which format to release their titles on. in both cases they’re right.

  44. john i dont understand why you can complain about the HD-wars but some in real power makes a stand and say “no i dont want the millions you will offer me for the sequal because i m annoyed” you get all frazzeled, i just dont understand. Why can he says what he wants to, hes not hurting anyone

  45. I dont understand why people are saying such harsh things like “go fuck off doing bad boys 3” that kind of language is not needed especially when all he is doing is (just like) commenting on his disapproval of the HD-Wars. let the guy say what he wants. Give him a break after all the crap he took for transformers he still came out smelling like roses and not you find something else to complain about. geeeez

  46. If Spielberg can get his Indiana Jones trilogy released in Blu-ray, even though Paramount is going the other route (Spielberg prefers Blu-ray), then that’s probably why Bay said what he said. He wants the same consideration that Spielberg gets.
Although I don’t think Bay has as much clout as Speilberg, kudos to him for trying.

  47. Here’s the grab, MAX.

I’m just gonna skip HD discs and go from DVDs to Digital Downloads, so none of this format war crap even matters to me. And since I don’t actually care about the HD formats, but I DO want Bay to direct Transformers 2 (others may disagree, but I think he is the right choice for this series), this sounds to me like nothing more and crybaby BS. I do think the movies can be made without his help, but that fact doesn’t make him sound less whiny. Blu-Ray is shit. HD-DVD is shit. Series of Tubes FTW.

  48. And who in the sphincter of hell Paramount think they are? Why can’t I have the best picture of the year and one of my favourite movies in my preferred format, which by the way has a better quality? And don’t give me that crap that the customer doesn’t notice, I’m sure 20GB more makes a hell of a difference, without mentioning the extra stuff you can put in there. Oh, and go ask Steven Spielberg what’s gonna be of his movies.

Kudos for Bay. Fuck Paramount. Oh, and fuck Microsoft too, by the way.

  49. You know what Michael Bay. Because of your selfish ways, you just disappointed a lot of fans. And I promise you that you will never get them back. I hope the rest of your career goes into the cans. Make more movies that suck because those are the only kinds you deserve now. Plus, you passed on working on a STEVEN SPIELBERG MOVIE! YOU ARE RETARDED! STEVEN SPIELBERG, PLEASE DIRECT TRANSFORMERS 2

  50. Why should Bay care unless his earnings are directly affected by DVD sales?

I mean, it’s not like they won’t have an opportunity to remedy the situation through “double dipping” should Blu-ray come out the clear victor.

That being said — bring on BOB ZEMECKIS!

  51. Well, actually, AFAIK, Spielberg and Lucas prefer Blu-Ray, and Spielbergs movies are not included in the decision of Paramount and Dreamworks. It says so at the end.

  52. Obviously you guys are missing the point that Michael Bay is the only one in this whole fiasco who’s standing up for the consumer… That’s the way he can do it- by threatening to not direct a movie who’s prequel has made Paramount $660 million.

  53. I bought a expensive ass toaster especially for a very special thick and delicious Blu-Berry Bread; but now all of a sudden Hostess decides to stop making the thick Blu-berry bread, and now I have to buy Wonder and a new toaster to boot. Well fuck this, I’m not going to make toast anymore!!!!

Ha ha ha ha, watch my kids starve Hostess, take pity on me and pay up before I attempt to make my malnourished dying offspring appear to be drained by your hands!!!! Muh ha ha ha ha!!!

Melbye is right, Bay is just trying to milk a giant cash cow for all it’s worth. What a fuckin’ rotted, hairy, apple cider, douchebag, cunt whore.

  54. Actually, I think MORE creators should get involved in the latest format war. Letting Sony, Toshiba, etc. decide the outcome is getting us nowhere. If people with REAL muscle in Hollywood (Spielberg, Lucas, Scorcese, etc.) band together they could affect real change, maybe putting an end to this thing.

  55. I don’t think he will stick by this, but if he does it’s a good thing for Paramount. Nobody will have any interest in the empty gimmickry of that pile of crap by the time they have a sequel finished. Pretty much anyone they could choose would be a more competent director for cheaper, and could put a new spin on the material that might convince people burned by the first one to give it a chance. Paramount gains a lot, loses nothing. Good movie.

  56. I heard that at the finish of the Transformers movie, Michael Bay bought PS3s for the whole cast and copies of the PS3 Transformers game and thank yous for working together so well and now he’s just mad that they won’t be able to use his gift to watch their movie.

And by “I heard”, I mean I made all that shit up and nobody should believe a word of it.

  57. Ehm. Why shouldn’t he put pressure on the studio regarding this issue? Bay is actually in a position where he has some leverage. I say good for him for standing up for his beliefs. By now he’s got enough money to live the good life a few times over. Maybe he actually does make movies “for his fans”, and find the whole experience useless if everyone can’t enjoy his work? Might be a bit far fetched, but I can’t see how you could be angry at him for this. If more directors and producers followed his lead it would force the studios to make movies for both formats or finally decide on ONE. Lets hope that is what will happen, and not, as you purpose, they all put their heads in the sand and whine about it privately. Because that wont do shit.

On the other hand I found Transformers to be quite silly and would prefer a different director. But that has nothing to do with the question at hand.
