Man Of Steel Delayed Till 2010?

By Doug - July 3, 2007 - 12:03 America/Montreal

sup3.jpegFor those of you that were waiting for the next Superman installment in The Man Of Steel; it looks like you may have to wait longer. Brian Singer looks busy with some other projects on his plate that look to be pushing the Kryptonian down the list. We get the scoop from Rotten Tomatoes:

“Bryan Singer had previously told us that the “Superman Returns” sequel “Superman: The Man of Steel” would be his next film after “Valkyrie.” His producers tell another story. Neil Meron and Craig Zadan have Singer lined up to direct “The Mayor of Castro Street,” a story of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, within a year.

“The next Superman, that’s a ways off,” claimed Meron, with Zadan adding. “Don’t worry about it. Trust me. We may even start preproduction on Harvey Milk while he’s on post production on the Tom Cruise movie.”

Superman Returns was not a horrible movie going experience, but I did have some problems with the story and how it related to the character of Superman. The action sequences were pretty boring and the entire film I kept asking myself “what cost so much money?”

I liked Spacey as Luthor and Routh as Supes, I just wish they had a stronger script to have worked with and no baby Daddy drama. Personally I would not mind if the studios tapped another person to direct this project. Singer left the X-Men series to tackle Superman, and looking back I would say that it was a poor decision. Hindsight is 20/20 but after the success of X2 I think it was a mistake for him to leave in order to make a mediocre Superman film. I would call in Clint Eastwood at this point, Superman needs an injection of macho.

I agree. I wouldn’t be sad if Singer didn’t come back for the second one. I liked the first one despite all it’s flaws, but felt that he really missed the opportunity to make a great Superman. I don’t like how the film version of Superman has become the continuity that all Superman mythology is now based on. Even the comic is adopting aspects of the film. What we need now is the action packed Superman, and if Singer can bring the “Wrath of Khan” version he wants, then more power to him.

I think Singer is done with Superman. He made a incredibly bad Superman. Warner knows that a majority of people don’t favor his vision and if Singer starts the same bullshit he did with X-Men they will drop him.

  3. I think Singer can and will bring that full force action feeling to the next Superman, and I say we give him the time to do it. From the people I’ve talked to, it isnt that he made a bad superman film, (i personally liked it btw) its that they just dont like superman. Superman is too powerful of a character, and therefore he needs something that can kill him. He needs to take on something so powerful that for a time in the film, it brings him and the world to its knees. Something that doesnt take away his powers but is so strong that he might as well be a human going against a train.

Also they need to do something original. I would say kill Lois, but that was done in the real first movie. And seeing her dead again, people would be like “why doesnt he just turn the world around again”

Even though I enjoyed Superman Returns, I’d like to see a different director take on the project. If he does the second, then he becomes “the guy”, ala Peter Jackson, and it gets more difficult to replace him.

I still maintain that Lobo would be a great villain to see in a Superman film. But as Josh said, there needs to be something to bring “him and the world to its knees”. If something is strong enough to go up against Superman, the world should be afraid, very afraid. It needs to have that scope.

    Uhhh…
Singer confirmed at the Saturn Awards about a month ago that THE MAN OF STEEL was next. To be more accurate, he said he was working on both VALKRIE and the SUPERMAN sequel at the moment and would dedicate 100% of his energy towards THE MAN OF STEEL once he finished his WWII film at the end of this year.

Not to mention, Legendary Pictures has the sequel listed under “In Development” on their official website. Regardless, we gotta wait to hear outta WB and Singer’s camp till we know for sure what’s going on.

Remember when Variety said VALKYRIE was going to delay THE MAN OF STEEL, and they were wrong?

  6. Blaze87 says:

    Don’t buy it.

  7. FilmNerdJamie says:

Don’t buy what? I was hungry Goddamnit!

I totally agree with you about Superman Returns! it was an very mediocre film that had a lot of promise but no follow through. The biggest thing now is the debacle involving the $200 million price tag on the film.

Where did that money go? there were films with more and bigger action scenes that cost a lot less than that.

The biggest problem with Superman returns is that they didn’t know whether they were making a sequel or a homage and they tried to have their cake and eat it too. It can’t be both, they tried to make a remake/homage of the original Superman and Disguise it as a sequel.

As a homage it worked pretty much, but as a sequel it failed miserably and this is where the story fell apart.

The problem right now is where do they go next? Having the series take place in the original movie’s “world” seriously limits the originality and creative license they can take with any future Superman films.

They not only have to restructure/re-invent any comic book elements to fit in a “live-action” world, but they now have to worry if anything they take from the comics will fit into the original Movie’s “world”.

this may not sound like much of an issue, but any Superman Comic fan will tell you that there are things in the comic books that will NOT fit into the world of the original Superman Movie.

They need to make up their minds NOW on what approach they will take on the next film.

  9. Blaze87 says:

    I don’t believe this post.

  10. Cole says:

Thats great. Because then Superman Jr will be about 12 years old and we can watch 2 hour of Superman driving his kid to little league practice.

(Obviously I’m still upset at what they did in the first movie. I could care less about the sequel so as long as they don’t delay Batman I’m fine)

  11. krazie835 says:

I wouldn’t be sad either if they replace Singer (who I think is a good director) because I didn’t like his version of Superman.

I think that Jason hit the mark saying that they didn’t seem to know what they were making a homage or requel. I had several problems with the film one it was to long and at times very boring not to mention the fact that the acting in the film was mediocre by everyone.

One thing I thought was that why didn’t Lois Lane think she was raped by Superman? I mean he did give her the kiss at the end of Superman II which made her forget everything. So that one night they slept together she wouldn’t remember either so when she had the baby she should have thought my goodness “how did I get pregnant and with Supermans baby?”. I am pretty sure any woman would that Superman would have raped them if they had no memory of a romantic night with The Man of Steel.

  12. Herby says:

Actually, I’m far more interested in seeing “The Mayor of Castro Street.”

I remember the Harvey Milk murder, and it’s about time someone made this film.

  13. Kristina says:

Delay it ’til 2015 so Kate Bosworth can have plenty of time to take acting lessons and look old enough to play Lois fucking Lane as a woman and not as the jilted prom queen. God, Superman Returns was worse than Taco Bell diarrhea.

  14. Jeff Razey says:

Kristina, why so fucking angry? Taco Bell diarrehea? Jilted Prom Queen? DAAAAMMMMM….

Superman Returns started like “Alone in the Dark” by Uwe Boll – with writen dialoge to explain what the heck they were going to do with the movie; now correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t GOOD movies supose to show …um… a FUCKING MOVIE, not text for some lame ass plot?

    - Krazie835, totally agree with your comment about the “Kiss” to wipe her memmory (lame as that was too) WHAT WAS HE THINKING??? CAN ANYONE EXPLAN THIS TO ME?? If this indeed was ment to follow the one of the last movies with Chris Reeve, then what the hell was going on? BIGGEST LET DOWN IN A MOVIE EVER!!!!

Get Chris Nolan to direct it

(ya, I’m angry too…Superman Returns = Taco Bell Diarrehea)

  15. Kristina says:

I’m not necessarily angry, but that movie was crapola. I’m tired of getting hyped only to get let down. I’m just irritated, I guess. I went into that movie expecting SUPERMAN, and I got a Days of Our Lives/Maury paternity test show. Fuck that.

  16. diskjokk says:

    John,

Interesting comments about your idea of calling in Clint Eastwood to direct the next Superman movie.

I think i’d be interested in seeing that. Eastwood is definitely one of the best directors in the business today.

However, I wonder if Clint Eastwood could handle all of the special effects an action packed Superman film would require?

I’d like to see a different director for Supes 2. I think Singer should move on to other projects.

  17. darkbhudda says:

Unfortunately Superman is such a big property that I can’t forsee any movies being brilliant. Too many people with too much invested in the project interfering with any singular directorial vision. Though it means they can save the movie from being a complete disaster, it also means they stop it from being a complete triumph.

“I would call in Clint Eastwood at this point, Superman needs an injection of macho.”
The same director who brought us The Bridges of Madison County?

  18. Dark Buhudda, Clint Eastwood is also the same director who gave us Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales, Letters From Iwo Jima, Play Misty For Me, Heartbreak Ridge and White Hunter Black Heart.

    So there.
But—he’d be better signed to helm a version of Jonah Hex than Supeyman.

As for Singer and Soupyman, if he wants to move on to other things- even get back to the Logan’s Run remake- I would not give one hoot if he did walk away from Soupyman.

2010? Hmmm…well, at least Miss Bosworth cat put something on her bones. If she she don’t look out, she could win the part of a biopic on the Karen Carpenter…when the late singer was laid out in the coffin…

  19. Bradley says:

GAHHHHH my stocks on hsx.com for superman 2 just totaly crashed, I lost about a million dollars GAHHHH

  20. Mozzerino says:

There’s no denying it, SR did have MAJOR problems:
Mainly an illogical script, a cartoonish villain and roughly 30 minutes overlength. Not to mention Kate Bosworth.
Yet, there are parts of “Superman Returns” that nearly brought tears to my eyes. The opening credits, the fantastic soundtrack, the amazing shuttle rescue, that stuff was purely Superman.
And Brandon Routh did good I think. A few years down the line he will have matured a bit, which will only make him better.
“Superman Returns” did get the essence of Superman right. The lonelines he feels, the sense of not fitting in, but having to continue a legacy. Also the overall Christ/Our saviour metaphor worked very well.
Let’s face it, in it’s essence Superman is nothing but a alien Jesus in a cape and a better haircut.

There is plenty of potential for “The Man of Steel” to be the best Superman film ever. The makers will have learned their lesson from the first one and will hopefully get a tighter script with more action, then everybody should be happy.

  21. FunkyMunkey says:

Mozzerino, I agree with your comments about geting the essence of Superman right (those opening credits gave me shivers, and superman’s beating at the hands of Luther’s thugs worked really well). I have to say that, overall, I really like the film.

But having the kid was a very strange choice because the whole “superkiss” thing at the end of Supes 2 was… well, stupid. Continuing this thread with no explanation as to if she remembers, etc. spoils the film a bit. Why the hell didn’t he just ignore that part?

Anyway, I think a nwe director would be good idea.
