Golden Compass Preview Online

Once again we get a clip shared through the wonders of eager fans attending the San Diego Comic Con, and this time its a 5 minute preview of the Golden Compass.
I have to say I am very eager to see this film. After I finish reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I want to run out and pick up this book. I know that reading the book will make the film seem like so much was left out or done wrong, but I just can’t read a book about a movie I have already seen. My mind races to fit the written word with my memory of the film and it ruins it all for me.
But this looks amazing so far!

I LOVE Nicole Kidman, but she is looking creepy as hell lately, and not just in this film. Lay off the Botox, babe.
And this movie looks a bit too…I’m trying to find the right word….heavy? adult? for the kiddie crowd. I can see little ones falling asleep on this thing or kicking the chairs in the theater with those damn light-up shoes. I don’t know. It looks interesting, but I’m not completely sold yet.
It does look very good ie the environment. The polar bear kinda plays like an extended Coca-Cola commercial though.
Agree with Kristina on the heaviness of the mood and Kidman’s look too!
I am reading The Golden Compass right now on the recommendation of a friend. I’m nearly done, and have LOVED all of it. Rodney, I highly recommend it and I’m really excited for the movie.
It’s not a heavy read, but it deals with some heavy themes. It’s a nice balance of childlike playfullness with some serious events so I hope they can balance this in the film version.
I’m with Kristina on this (not about Nicole Kidman), but i hope the film doesn’t buckle under the weight of having characters talk about the plot in every scene. We don’t need another David Lynch’s ‘Dune’.
Still, it’s the big Christmas film. I’m sure i’ll give it a go.
The “His Dark Materials” trilogy is one of my favorite book series, up there with LOTR. The Golden Compass is the only book that ever made me cry (when they force Lyra and Pan apart…sob!). It looks like they did a pretty good job translating it to film and the Daemons look pretty good. I’m a librarian and I recommend this book to everyone who asks. The few who do read it thank me profusely.
One major departure from the books is the concept of the Magisterium. In the books, they fight against God and the Angels. That would not have gone over quite well with Christians I guess. So they replaced God with a vague authority figure. That may work in this film but the sequels have the witches fighting the angels. I don’t know what they will replace angels with.
Video won’t play for me, but the posters for the movie are awesome.
Seen it, seen it. Looks AMAZING. Kidman is unbelievably good, from the video.
Question: What’s with the spitting? And the old man with Groucho Marx ‘stache, isn’t he the guy from Ghost Rider?
@Naught
That’s him, Sam Elliot.
This will be a very heavy movie. Being a big fan of the series and loving the books, if you read them you would understand that the books are extremely heavy into more adult issues then any child should ever dream of. I think the book was more aimed at a young adult (16-24) age group, so this will be far from a kids novel but most likely a very good one. And I agree with nicole kidman, looking a little creepy nowadays
Eva Green looks good in this of course she always looks good in everything she is in =).
@Krazie, I second that. Eva can look wooden sometimes but hotdamn she is sexy. I love her voice, her accents.
@Kristina
I knew it! lol I love it when I figure out actors from one movie to the other. In fact, I figured out one actor that have a role both in Troy and 300.. I know I’m weird.
after hearing many people and reviews, I am intreged about this movie. I don’t think I am going to take my son to see it. It is written by a british athiest to get childern to turn there veiws against God. Phillip Pullman has a very strong objective to bash christianity and promote atheism
Snowangelet, I feel that Pullman’s religious views might obviously influence his works, but even when this was simply a book, no one thought he wrote this to promote athiesm.
Harry Potter doesn’t believe in God either, and is in fact a wizard. Do you think that Rowling was “promoting” witchcraft and the occult or was it simply part of the mythos?
