Alex Proyas Directing Silver Surfer?

Surfer-RiseThere are a lot of good things to say about Alex Proyas as a director (ok, I wasn’t totally thrilled with I, Robot… but that seemed like one hell of a tough film to pull off). The man who did films like “The Crow” and “Dark City” is apparently being lined up by the studio to direct the forthcoming “Silver Surfer” film.

The good folks over at slashfilm give us this:

Marvel producer Avi Arad revealed the following tidbit in article about super hero filmmaking in Australia: Arad would not name the films he planned to shoot in Australia, but he did reveal he was attempting to hire an Australian director for one of the movies. He declined to say the director’s name, but there has been speculation Australian director Alex Proyas was being wooed to direct the film adaptation of another Arad project, ‘Silver Surfer’.

It should also be mentioned that Alex Proyas is listed as “Announced” and “In talks” on the IMDB with regards to directing the Surfer.

Personally, I don’t like this move at all. I like Proyas, but a Silver Surfer movie?!?! I think he shouldn’t take it. Fantastic Four 2 was so lame, and the Surfer character was a disappointment of Jar Jar proportions (he’s the Silver Surfer… he never talked…. and not one single solitary fight scene. What the hell were they thinking?).

I’d much rather see Proyas take on something else… but if not… he’ll at least make the Silver Surfer a hell of a lot more interesting than FF2 did.

  1. Meh, Proyas has become a sell-out since I Robot. The guy is very talented, I love The Crow and Dark City, but he needs to make his own movies, not do mediocre commercial blockbusters.

  2. Proyas is the man. I-Robot, not that great, but it could have been worse and it was actually decent under the talented Alex. Regardless, The Crow and Dark City has his place assured as a great diretor. If he does this I hope he takes it to a whole new level above I-Robot quality. And if he doesn’t do this please direct something soon!!

  3. So I guess it will be an origin story and they will show Galactus. Sounds good with Proyas attached, but probably not true. We’ll see.

Now, please no more raping of the FF name, Fox.

  4. I think a SS movie could be good, New writer and another director might turn this into a fine film. But i think it would make more sense that Proyas would direct Thor or Captain America, or maybe Marvel came to their senses and Goyer won’t direct Magneto. Seriously, the guy is a great writer but no a good director

  5. I actually thought surfer was kick arse in that awful movie and he had great presence as if you really didnt want to find out how powerful he was. still a awful awful film though must admit better then spidey

  6. Uh, Gio…The Silver Surfer DID talk in ‘FF2’…but had about as many lines as Arnie in the first Terminator.

As for Proyas, it is an interesting choice, but there is one major hurdle to get over, and that is the FF films in all thier well intended plot-holed family friendly goofiness…if you know what I mean.

  7. I’d watch Proyas direct a piece of bread.
If they have to do a Surfer-movie, they should at least get an interesting director. Who would you prefer? Tim Story? Shawn Levy?
My wettest geek dream would be a Surfer-Movie directed by James Cameron. Just imagine what he would do with it.

  8. I m all for this, i love the crow and i thought Dark city was great, i-robot i enjoyed but was nothing special but i was still impressed how he handled it, i think proyos can make silver surfer cool again, love to see all his intergalictic battles and maybe even galactus himself if its an orgin story. Silver surfer has some fantastic setting i just hope its not set on earth but if proyos does do it i ll be pumped for this
