Massive Tech Problems On The Movie Blog

Hey there guys… just a heads up.

A whole whack of people have been letting me know that for some reason the comments aren’t working for them, and they all describe the same problem. On top of that, the page has only been loading like 70% of the time, and often people are getting a “Service Temporarily Unavailable” message and are needing to refresh once or twice to get the page to load.

Our hosting company (GoDaddy) tells us it’s because of the amount of traffic… but I don’t buy that since our traffic hasn’t significantly gone up in the last 2 months… when things were perfectly fine. I’ve tried to get this problem dealt with… but GoDaddy refuses to do anything.

So next week… for the 5th time in our history… we’re going to be changing hosting companies and leaving GoDaddy for good. Too bad, cause up to this point I’ve been pretty happy with their service.

So thanks for all the email and heads up folks! We’ll get working on fixing all those problems you’ve been having as soon as I get home from LA. Cheers!

  1. Just to say the traffic might of increased by a lot but if GoDaddy could not handle the bandwith and the page didn’t load no visitor tracking tool would know if there is more visitors.

When I read the headline I thought you were going back to the old design again…

  2. GoDaddy does OK by me — pretty good tech support. But I’ve read all kinds of posts where they just sort of blame problems on things that simply dont exist (like increased traffic) and don’t take a look at their own infrastructure upgrades.

  3. Hey John, why not try DreamHost? I’m using it right now, and i love it. It grows by a little bit every week in its space and bandwidth, which might help.

Just a suggestion for your hosting shopping.

  4. LOL… ok, I hear ya. But I run a number of websites, all off of one dedicated server and it’s worth the $200-300 bucks month to me for not having to deal with competing with other folks for CPU, virtually unlimited bandwidth and no one telling me I’m putting too much of a strain on the server. :-)

  5. Hey John – Why don’t you put feelers out there and have hosting companies fight among themselves to have your business? Get the top three bids and then read opinions of those three hosting companies.
You can make an educated decision after that.

  6. Ahhhh… Prophecy the internet Troll continues his trolling. And he’s a liar. I’ve talked to GoDaddy about the specific problem… they told me what it is… but they won’t fix it unless I do a huge upgrade.

Go ahead Prophecy. Tell your Tokyo friend to shut my site down. Or go tell your high ranking Warner Bros. friend to have me sued. Then go tell Snuffleupagus and your other imaginary friends to do stuff to.

You really are a sad, pathetic, lying, troll of a loser who has nothing better to do with your time than entertain the rest of us with your Monica Lewinsky like stupidity.

  7. This is the 1st time I’ve been able to comment in almost a month. I was having withdrawals of TMB. Shaking and sweating on the floor and shit. Thanx for response John, you’re the best.

  8. John, I am using powweb.com. So far, I am very pleased with their services. I am paying $21 every 3 months for Powweb to host my site. Services include Web, E-mail, and MySQL. As with the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for”, this is especially true in the tech field.

  9. I wasn’t able to comment in the last couple weeks until recently (obviously), and getting the “Service Temporarily Unavailable” message. Thought it was this damn dial-up. Yes, I live in the boonies in Canada…and NOT in an igloo :P.

  10. Been there, done that. Not with GoDaddy, but others. Step it up to Rackspace. They rock. Believe me. Starting day one with Rackspace, you simply no longer worry about it.

  11. I’m with Joe all the day. I’ve been running my sites off a dedicated server for the last six or seven months and I’ve had zero problems whatsoever. Highly recommended.

  12. Godaddy is terrible, John. They’re a good “start up” company, but once you’ve grown enough, it’s time to move. I’m not sure how much money you’re making off the site, but you should consider a dedicated server with a mid-level host. As the saying goes, “You get what you paid for.”

P.S. I am a webmaster, and always hosts my sites with Godaddy when I’m starting them out. If they become a hit, I move them immediately to a new host. More expensive, but it’s worth it. Godaddy’s biggest problem is that they oversell, so even if you pay for Premium Service or higher, you still end up stuck with other sites.

  13. Yeah I have noticed an increase in “Service Temporarily Unavailable” pages coming up instead of the site over the past few days. And I HAVE been having to refresh the page. But for the most part it’s not that big of a problem.
