The Worst Movie Posters of All Time

Bad-Posters

A good trailer does NOT mean a good movie… nor a bad trailer a bad movie (just go watch the original Star Wars Trailer... oh good grief). That’s even more true for movie Posters. We all love seeing a kick ass movie poster… but that doesn’t mean the movie will be any good… it just means they had a good poster designer. And a bad poster doesn’t mean a bad movie (althought sometimes….).

So I came across this “Worst 10 movie posters” list over at Filmcynic (via Joblo) that I thought was pretty good (or pretty bad as the case may be).

The movie they list as the worst ever is Superman 3, and I whole heartedly have to agree with them. It is the poster that signaled the destruction of a successful franchise. Just look at that thing… it turns the stomach just to think about it. Who came up with that??? Worst of all… what executive saw it and said “Yeah… that’s our poster!!”.

Another one I’d have to add in here is the poster for Serenity. I loved that movie to death… but the poster looks like something some fan hacked together in Photoshop in about 3 minutes. Just horrible.

So how about you guys? What, in your opinion, are some of the absolute worst movie posters you’ve ever seen?

Wow. I really like the Serenity poster you have up there! Shows you what I know. However, I really hate the dvd cover for Serenity, and that’s the poster that was in the Uk for the film.

Ps. Why do I have to type a word in the bottom box before I post this?

    tarmac,

    i believe it’s for spammers.

i can’t think of a movie poster that’s really bad, although the one that john posted for superman 3 is awful.

    YIKES at that Supes poster.

I do wish though that more posters would be artsy rather than some photoshopped shit. I hate the movies, but the Star Wars prequels have some beautiful posters, especially Episode 1. I hate the movie, but I have that poster. It’s a gorgeous piece of artwork.

I just watched that Star Wars trailer for the first time and thought it was actually pretty good. It is ironic though that the first sentence in the trailer directly conflicts with the first sentence in the movie.

“Somewhere in space this may all be happening right now.”
    vs.
“A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.”

Recently, while seeing the poster for ‘NEXT’ up on a billboard in London – the first thing that came to mind was ‘worst poster ever.’ Much like the Serenity one (although the one we had in the UK was much better) it just screams GCSE (or whatever exams you take at 16 in Canada) art student.

  6. CJ says:

The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer poster isn’t that good, in my opinion.

  7. JaySmack says:

Spider-Man 1. Just Peter and his girl. How exciting –yawn. They must have taken the VERY first concept piece the Art dept handed them.

  8. JaySmack says:

Sorry, I meant Spider-Man 2. Wait, now that I think about it the first one wasn’t all that inspired either.

  9. Kristina says:

I like the first one of him climbing up the building and looking right at you. I had to draw that thing for an art class. It was a bitch:)

  10. Kristina says:

The poster for that new Robin Williams movie with Mandy Moore in it is pretty bad. And the poster for Norbit gives me bad dreams.

  11. WEll, having a look over at the site, I wished they would have put up an original Alice one sheet instead of the DVD cover. The writer talks about Woody Allen…has the writer even SEEN any ads for ANY Woody Allen picture? They all been pretty simple, and except for Sleeper, Play It Again Sam and Purple Rose…all have been bland.

Jaysmack, I think Sacrifice, as it is called as Spidey Wallpaper, is the best of the Spidey 2 artwork since it has Spidey, MJ/Dunst and Ock Ock in the corner of Spidey’s eye. Strange, though, that the art box of Spidey 2.1…is actually the best art of the first two films. Speaking of which, I’m a little miffed that there were no official posters for Sandman or Venom. I’m not alone hre- there was even a fan made Venom poster that crused around the internet two months ago.

What are the worst? Well, Superman III is a top choice- oddly, Superman 4: Quest For Peace was BETTER in ad art. I’d also nominate:

    1) “The Scout” a little seen film with Brendan Fraser & Albert Brooks.

    2) “Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child” NOT the original art, but the ‘replacement’ art because the first art was deemed too un PC at the time.

    3) “Freddy’s Dead”, or Nightmare 6, to be technical. Considering the time for how strikingly great art-like the ads for Nightmares 3-5 were, this was a step down.

    4) “Lair Of The White Worm”. I LOVE this, and I HAVE IT in my possession. However, as much as I may gawk at Amanda Donahoe, there is that swirly red-yellow backdrop which has the credit block really tough to read. See? I love it so much I am its own worst critic.

    5) “Nightbreed” While it would have been nice to see Clive Barker’s film before it was tampered with, the studio’s promotion of the film is unexcusable. I’m a little shocked that site (filmcynic) forgot about it. How did Fox promote ‘Nightbreed’? Well, the album work for thescore was only typeface. The poster? A hand me down from Fox’s ‘Bad Dreams’.

    6) “Quiz Show”. There’s just something about…having someone’sback to you that isn’t mysterious or involving. I don’t mean a character who has his/her back to you (the audience) but glancing back; I mean his/her back is to you.

    7) “Jaws The Revenge”. Like it said in the trailers. This Time It’s Personal.

    8) “Ringmaster” -as if people actually wanted a Jerry Springer movie.

    9) “Little Man” -Less said about that, the better.

All the one sheet posters from various suspense and horror films that riff off “Scream”. I’m tired of them. Yt they still
