Doug Nagy Reviews Shrek 3

I was not that big of a Shrek fan going into Shrek 3. I have no children and hate most childrens programming, but I am not averse to a good fairty tale or cartoon. I find fables to be delightful and a marvelous way to entertain and educate children at the same time. Aesop is a man that could keep a 6 year old entertained and a king educated with the same fable; this is the power of a great story. Shrek 3 is not such a story.

The best thing about this film was the look of it. The amimation was just downright awesome. It is a delight to see how much further into excellence the special effects wizards delve year after year. Entertainment is so much better than real life, some people are now abandoning the real world all together and playing videogames in place of living. This is the down side to special effect excellence, in the near future no one will leave the houe. Everyone will play Halo 3 all day long and get touched in the swimsuit area by their robot sex helpers.

Special effects aside, this movie was not very enjoyable. The story was alright, the characters annoyed me more than anything. A death scene that was supposed to be a joke seemed awkward for the kids in the theatre. The movie kept plodding along which was good, I just never really cared what happened. The story was predictable which does not always bother me, but nothing interesting happened along the way.

As an observer one thing stood out to me. The theatre was packed with kids and I hardly heard them laughing at all. If the kids do not think the movie is funny – something has gone horribly wrong. I thought the jokes were lame and apparently so did the 10 and under crowd. I am hard pressed to think of another kids movie where the reaction of the crown was so dead. If you have kids and want to take them to a funny movie, you better wait this one out.

This is the second blockbuster dissapointment of the summer for me. I would not reccomend this movie unless your child is rabid about Shrek. No Go or Routh I would give this movie a No. With such a cast of talent you think they would be able to bring some laughs out of even the worst of scripts, but that is not the case. With news of another 3 films on the march I hope they make 4 more enjoyable than this one.

International friends what are your thought on the film?

I have no interest in seeing this other than the fact that the transformers trailer is attached, and i already saw that!!

    so no interest, none!

  2. louman2 says:

After Shrek 3 and Spider man 3 reactions, could this be the summer of disappointments? That means the entire Summer is just one sequel and movie after another that are just ‘alright’ to bad. What do you think, Doug?

  3. Ross says:

On a scale of one to ten Doug?

  4. jojo says:

for the first time ever i agree Doug.

    shrek 3 was the suck.

Potc3 will deliver in entertainment and story.

  5. @spence says:

F**Kin right we will be playing Halo 3 all day long……

  6. Kristina says:

The big three movies this month are shaping up to be busts. My Spidey Sense is telling me that Pirates will be an epic clusterfuck. If you thought Spidey 3 was crowded, oh just you wait……

  7. Paul Martinez says:

I thought shrek 3 was hilarious. It wasn’t quite as funny as spidey 3 though, but seriously, shrek was good, im not sure what Doug was expecting.

  8. Robert(wolf) says:

This is why Transformers is going to fly under and blow us away in the fucking faces! We are getting the same stuff moreless all this summer, expect Transformers, which is going to be different.

  9. Mr Stay Puft says:

The movie was dull and uninspired – a direct contrast to the original. My 5-year-old told me his favorite part was the Transformers trailer.

  10. doug nagy says:

I am glad we can finally agree on something JoJo, it was worth the wait.

I’ll tell you my thoughts August 31 when the movie opens in my country

  13. Geoff says:

The movie was not very good. I wish the showing I saw had the Transformers trailer. The best I can say is that the story moved along much better than Spiderman 3 did. I liked Spiderman 3 better overall though.

  14. Cole says:

“With such a cast of talent you think they would be able to bring some laughs”

Who exactly in that cast of talent could bring laughs in a non-animated movie? Mike Myers is good but c’mon. Cameron Diaz isn’t one known for side splitting laughter. Antonio Bandarez? And even the incredible Eddie Murphy hasn’t gotten me to laugh for almost 2 decades.

  15. Rommey Romes says:

Have to disagree, I thought this was good enough, I don’t know if you should expect a great story for a animated film let alone a third installment. Most animated sequals are comming out straight to dvd. That being said Im excited to see further installments of Shrek, and on scale of 1-10 I give it a 7 on a go or no go I say go.

  16. DarkKinger says:

    STRIKE TWO!!!

Seriously, WTF?! Not that I watched Shrek 3, or had any remote interest, but this makes the second time a third movie failed to live up to the first two movies in the franchise this month.

Hopefully Pirates 3 will be the good luck charm…

    or else~!

  17. Daniel says:

I saw it yesterday and I was dissapointed. I give it a C+ (It gets the pluse for the Trnasformers trailer)

  19. louman2 says:

Do you guys ever update this stupid site?

I mean, for freak sakes, you’ve got 3 people working here. And John and Doug don’t have day jobs, so why are there no updates? Go get to work

  20. Hosero says:

What I expected, I did’nt see it but I could tell it was gonna be bad. Will pirates redeem itself after an awful second film? I am saying no way, its gonna be another total crapfest with the best goddamn special effects you’ve ever seen. That is until the giant goddamn robots show up.

  21. Clone_tk422 says:

Is there still going to be a round table today?

  22. will says:

it was just as i expected. not bad i thought.

but attached to my Thursday night at 10 showing, there was a transformers trailer thats not online, one with mostly all new footage except for the first 30 seconds or so of the trailer. great freaking stuff

  23. Thomas says:

The most accurate thing was said by Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post (on Spiderman 3, actually, but applies to Shrek, too): Fans with memories of “Batman Forever,” “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “Blade: Trinity” might also conclude that the number three is to comic franchises what 13th floors are to hotels.” Indeed … where has the fantasy gone??

  24. medavidson says:

Maybe — could it be — you (gentle reader) have aged a few years — got a few more movies under your belt — that you now see that, for the most part, summer movies ALWAYS suck unless you’re at a certain level of movie watching (I wanted to say ‘maturity’ but, well … flame on, my guess). Trust me, after you’ve seen the 30th iteration of “the big summer movie” and been disappointed 25 out of 30 times, you stop questioning why they suck all the time.

It seems odd that you’re actually surprised Shrek 3 is a golden turd. Ten years from now, you’ll smack yourself in the forehead and wonder why you thought it was going to be anything other than pure shit before it came out.

    Hugs.

  25. Jarek says:

Shrek 3 was funny after the plot was set up. As I said before in another review, I felt they tried too hard to be funny in the beginning.

The jokes got better as the movie went on. The voice acting was good, no complaints.

The end credits were really really weak compared to the other films…I was expecting a karaoke love-fest and got crawling babies. Lame.

Overall, I give it a “GO”.

  26. miles says:

    i hated it.

it was pointless, uninspired and frankly a little bit pathetic. i thought it was just a cash grab with the lazy attempts at story and humor.

  27. I could see the writers laughing at their own jokes in this stupid display of trite fairytale carbon copy. It was boring and un-inventive. Will not see Shrek 4. Bleck.

  28. This is by far the funniest of all the ‘Shrek’ fanchise movies.

It can’t compete with the first Shrek movie which was still the most awesome… but as far as laughing out loud til your guts hurt goes, the movie Shrek the Third is the champ.

You’ve gotta see this movie.. trust me, It’s got jokes to spare even for the next century.. I know I’m exaggerating..
but I kid you not, Shrek The Third will be worth the…
