11th Hour

leodicap.jpegLeo has put up his own money and is spearheading a documentary called 11th Hour. The film will be released domestically this fall. We get the story from the caves of Yahoo:

The title of “11th Hour” refers to the last moment when change is possible, and the film features interviews with more than 50 scientists, thinkers and world leaders, including former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, scientist Stephen Hawking, former CIA chief R. James Woolsey, and sustainable design experts William McDonough and Bruce Mau.

In addition to co-producing and narrating the film, DiCaprio wrote the script with its directors, Leila Conners Peterson and Nadia Conners.

In an age where no one will listen to your argument unless it is on TV – this is necessary. It is a film that seems to be “An Inconvenient Truth 2″ but I welcome it. The scientific community is smart and should rule the earth, but they are meek. Actors like Di Caprio do well to be a voice for them; they needed it. The scientific community is going bonkers about global warming and they want to be heard.

Stephen Hawking is in this movie. This man is so smart it is sickening. When he suggests something – It is wise to consider his words. I hope to one day meet him, and steal his brain – so I may eat it and gain his knowledge.

Another person I hope that is in the documentary is David Suzuki . He is a Canadian hero and I hope he is in this film. Suzuki for those of you who don’t know Is a Canadian of Japanese descent, that was forced by the Canadian government into a WW2 concentration camp in his youth. Under the encouragement of his father he excelled at his studies with a special focus given to public speaking. He has popularized science in Canada for decades and puts out educational videos for schools. In one such video he gets drunk to show the effects of alcohol!

I am excited to see this film by DiCaprio. I believe global warming is a severe threat and that human pollution is poisoning the earth for all species. In a world where we have to share space with other life; this is unacceptable and arrogant. I am glad that this film and others are spreading the message, I do think that it is too little too late. In the next 200 years I will be surprised if humans still exist at all. Good thing I am a nihilist, otherwise I don’t know how I would sleep at night.

I wonder how much they’ve budgeted for carbon credits for the cast and production crew.

  2. Kristina says:

Even when he’s happy, Leo looks like he’s smelling a fart.

  3. virgilfiori says:

yeah…….. yet another crappy liberal anti conservative boggle of misinforming lies. sigh.

    Science is not political.

  5. Vimes says:

If these movie stars, politicians, and famous scientists really believed that global warming was as serious a threat as they pretend to think it is, they would stop flying around in private jets and start hand planting crops in their backyard. When Al Gore decides to stop using up 12 times the energy the average American household uses with his humongous mansion, then I’ll start being scared about global warming.

  6. virgilfiori says:

science is political if the facts are skewed. al ( dork ) gore recently admitted that he embelished parts of his film for more of a dramatic effect.

  7. Terry Letourneau says:

Oh man I wish I saw David Suzuki drunk LOL. Suzuki is not only a Canadian hero but a world hero in my opinion. I am 100% with you Doug. Environmental issues are very important to me (and the rest of the world) and need to be addressed ASAP. I am looking forward to this documentary.

I am happy to see this subjected being picked up by more filmmakes, hopefully An Inconvinient Truth has started a trend. I think it’s very counterproductive to pick apart the people making the doctumentary instead of the facts.

So Gore has a mansion, I bet it has a compost in the back yard, I’m sure there are energy saving lightbulbs in the place. If we all had to dress bad and live in small house and never travel in order to save the enviroment then no one would ever get on board.

It is about changing the small, every day things we do, because those are the things that add up.

  9. doug nagy says:

A movie may not have correct facts.
A person with a political agenda may stretch the truth or hide facts.
Al Gore is political – he was Vice President under Sir Bill Clinton.
    But Science is not political.

The large majority of scientists agree that global warming has begun -that is a fact. If things do not change the situation will get worse.

The majority said there is no scientific consensus. That is a fact. They have been saying that for decades, pretty much since Global Warming became the catchcry of the 80s because Global Cooling was shown to have too many holes in its theories, but that doesn’t sell newspapers and it doesn’t give politicians power.

There are claims and evidence that global warming is occuring, that global cooling is occuring, that it is natural and that it is man made.

But the concensus is that there is no concensus.

sorry doug. this is just a sore topic with me. i dont know how it is in canada but here in america it is shoved down our throats every day as if it is only our fault, blah blah blah. and i have to disagre. i think science is political. you have scientists saying both sides of the story all of the time . look at the theory of evolution. to say that science has never been a political topic is insane. by the way since i have the attention of a board admin. give a shout out to john and ask him to look up on the spaceballs tv show status.

” ah i see your schwartz is as big as mine. now lets see how you handle it”

  12. Doug Nagy says:

You are misunderstanding what I am saying.
Science itself is not political – end of story.

People may use issues related to science in a political contect.
I believe this is what you are suggesting.
But science is science, and we do not add politics to the definition of science.

Behind the political posturing and fighting is scientific research on the subject. Regardless of what your politicians tell you – you need to see what the scientific community as a whole is saying.

In the post Regan era of the TV star president – we need to do our own research. Politicians should never be trusted, they simply want re-election, and to keep party control.

I apologize that the global warming issue is being rammed down your throat. Treat these people like Jehovas Witnesses – you may not agree with them, but their heart is in the right place.

I was simply making a point and maybe I was not clear.

Science is not Political but people can use scientific findings certainly to aid a political argument.

Religion is not potlitical but that is also used to aid political arguments.

Science, Religion and Politics are separate fields. They need to stay that way. Whenever they are mixed in combination they are bastardized. I am simply making sure the language is clear.

    Doug:

I’m a graduate student in geosciences and hope to earn a doctorate in atmospheric sciences…if my wife doesn’t leave me first. I agree with a lot of what you said. Yes there are parts of the environment that we humans are absolutely destroying.

The main environmental problems facing the earth is overpopulation, not global warming. There is NOTHING in Earth’s warming paterns that unprecidented or unusual.

The celebs love global warming because you get to be against SUVs and snow blowers. But to be against overpopulation, you come of as cruel to people.

  14. doug nagy says:

    I agree with you.

Overpopulation is the root evil. We are too successful as a species.

I am pro – population control. We should actively be shrinking the human population – but no country wants to lose numbers, and no politician is going to enforce how many children people can have.

The best thing we could do for the environment is cut our pupulation in half (or more).

Personally I think drastic measures need to be taken for the good of the world and the human species.

Desmond Morris has very interesting stuff about the behavioural implications of overpopulation. It drives us bonkers.

  15. Ted Kord Lives says:

    Doug:

I soooo agree with your position. The population of California is now at 38 million.

I can see the symptoms of real environmental within an hours drive of my home town. I recently got to watch the farm I grew up on, and all the raw land surrounding it, turned into a housing tract. Our local aquifer is being depleted. And the Salton Sea, an important stopping point for migratory birds is dying due a deficit of water.

I believe that the generally recognized carrying capacity for the United States is between 180 and 220 million depending on the ecologist you talk to. We’re up to 300 million, and that’s probably going to rise to a half billion in my lifetime if comprehensive immigration reform passes.

I have to problem with environmentalism…except for this fixation on global warming. My Meteorology/climatology professors have pointed out repeatedly that the Earth is either warming or cooling. Tempertures never just remain at one optimum temperature.

And truth be told, if the planet’s population continues to go up, we’re going to need the coming warmer climate to grow enough food to feed everyone.
