Grindhouse Getting Split in 2 for UK Release

Posted by on 18. 04. 2007in News Chat

It’s shocking how fast the question of “how big of a hit will Grindhouse be?” changed to “Will Grindhouse make as much as Snakes on a Plane?”. Don’t laugh… I honestly don’t think it’s going to make as much as Snakes…. OUCH!

Anyway, as many of you already know, the plan has always been to split the Grinhouse into 2 separate films to be released in a number of foreign markets. However, due to the huge disappointment (the film has bomed big time) in it’s North American results, it looks like they’re splitting the movie up in EVERY other market now… including the UK… in an attempt to make back some of the massive wads of money their losing. You can’t really blame them too much. If I was losing as much as they are, I’d be looking for different ways to try to make some of it back.

That’s right… our international friends across the pond are going to have to go see Planet Terror and Death Proof on 2 separate occasions, because they won’t be playing together (If I might suggest just taking in Planet Terror and giving a pass to Death Proof… unless you’re having trouble sleeping, in which case Death Proof might be just for you).

But still, as disappointed as I was in Death Proof, the whole experience of Grindhouse was a really fun one, and having 2 features back to back was a fantastic idea. I lament for our international friends who can’t experience the film they way we did.

  1. Ross says:

Excuse my language but this is F*CKING B**LSHIT! I was SO looking forward to the WHOLE COMPELTE GRINDHOUSE experience and because of stupid people that can’t be bothered to watch a 3+ hours movie OTHERS have to SUFFER for it.

  2. Phil Gee says:

“You can’t really blame them too much.”

Yes we can John, watch us. I agree 100% with Ross. I am all for new ways to change and funk up the movie going experience which is why i was so excited to see Grindhouse. For once, we’d have a movie that’s worth £15 in ticket and snack costs because it’s two in one with amazing trailers that are better than the actual films.

Is this because Miramax believes that nobody outside of America and Canada can appreciate or understand what Grindhouse movies are? I can assure you that we do. Grindhouse was an experiment and i can understand that it will never be repeated after this; that’s sensible. But the fact that the rest of the planet don’t even get to experience it once is such bullcrap. Y’know Miramax, sometimes movies do better overseas than they do in your precious United States. Just a thought…

I highly doubt i’ll be seeing them individually. It was the ‘experience’ that i wanted. Sorry everyone, i’m really not a ranter at heart but i’m pissed about this.

  3. John Campea says:

    Hey Ross and Phil,

i don’t like it either, but sorry guys, but what are the Weinteins supposed to do? No one is going to the movie as it is (I personaly don’t think splitting it in 2 will help… but I can’t hold it against the guys for feeling the need to try SOMETHING. They’re losing their shirts on this.

If it was yours or mine money on the line, and we were losing everyting… we’d try this too… or at least something. Just a thought.

  4. Phil Gee says:

Yeah i guess they have to try what they think is right. All i’m saying is that there are a lot of Tarantino & Rodriguez fans in this country that have been looking forward to this and they’re initial reaction is going to be that they’ve been ripped off.

  5. SamF says:

The whole appeal of the film, sprry films, is pretty much gone for me now. I know it’s bombed but with stunts like this I think I might boycott this one and wait ’til the double bill dvd comes out in a bargain bin… i doubt it’ll be long as ripping people off over here will undoubtedly put off the only kind of people who were going to go watch it anyway (ie the film geeks)… as two parts these films really just don’t appeal anywhere near as much

  6. Pineapplehead says:

    This is fucking annoying!

It will completely change the experience from what it was supposed to be.

The only interesting thing will be which film grosses more.

  7. Kristina says:

Another reason why it rocks to be an American!

  8. Kristina says:

If it’s getting split, what happens to the fake trailers in between?

  9. FM says:

It will be interesting to find out where you got this information from John as you didnt quote any source or it’s all just hearsay?

  10. B.I.T.H. says:

Well I’ll wait to watch them on DVD then, it was the double feature that I was going to the cinema for.

  11. thegoodfella says:

    Agreed, this is absolute bullshit.

It doesn’t really makes much sense – I’ve already seen quite a lot of publicity here for Grindhouse, so surely that’s a lot of advertising money down the drain…

  12. Martin, UK says:

To Hell with them, then. They’re not getting my money. I love the film-makers but I’ll pirate this shit before I give them my money after this debacle. This goes against the whole goddamn idea of the film! Where the hell are Tarantino and Rodriguez while this is going on?

  13. wispy says:

laughing while they dance in money

  14. Mr Stay Puft says:

I’m with Kristina – USA! USA! USA!

As much as didn’t like Death Proof, I enjoyed the whole experience. Such is life.

  15. Domeister says:

For me, the American public is not to blame. It is the Weinsteins for releasing it in the middle of spring, right during Easter weekend. It is not the right time. This movie should have been released back closer to Halloween or the fall, when people are in the mood. Look at the Weinstein’s track record. They have not been the smartest when it comes to releasing movies, except when they were with Miramax, and probably someone else made those decisions. Movies under the Weinstein company name have not done that well, except for the Scary Movie franchise.

They are idiots when it comes to marketing and deserve all the revenue loss.

  16. Marina says:

I’m obviously in the minority of those who actually enjoyed “Death Proof” more than “Planet Terror” but the truth is, the experience was the real reason to shell out the money for a ticket. It’s too bad that the Weinstein’s are resorting to a split in an effort to make some money back but the reports from earlier this week said that they tested the split movies at US theaters and they actually made even less money.

I’m with the rest of the group, the interesting thing will be to see which movie makes the most money and I’m willing to bet that the clear winner will be “Planet Terror” even though it’s not the best of the two.

  17. funktard says:

Fuck I could have done without Death Proof. I didn’t even like that ones ending man. I would have left with a better taste in my mouth if it was just Planet Terror, Machete, and Thanksgiving.

  18. funktard says:

I agree that it is complete bullshit that the y are splitting it up into 2 films that being said.

  19. JaySmack says:

I think Marina’s comment will prove to be prophetic. Everyone knows this is supposed to be one movie, not two. By splitting it it’s not GrindHouse anymore, it’s simply Planet Terror and Death Proof.

Anybody see either one of those grossing 60 mil on their own?

  20. Kristina says:

    Hell no.

  21. krazie835 says:

I really doubt that its the Easter holiday that Killed Grindhouse because Sin City if i remember correctly was released April 1st and it made about $70 Million at the boxoffice. I am sure exactly how much it made but it did make more than its original budget I believe so I doubt its was Easter Holiday that caused the whole movie to fail at the boxoffice. One reason as to why Grindhouse failed was that the general audience just didn’t find it intresting at all. Another could be that people simply didn’t want to spend several hours in a cinema watching two movies because they didn’t say how long both films were going to be perhapes some people thought it was going to be two very long movies.

  22. Jarek says:

I’m going to have to see it again before it disappears from theaters. Honestly, I think there’s no hope for Grindhouse. It was a completely failed experiment and there’s very little hope of reviving/fixing it.

I totally agree with Krazie that the general public just doesn’t care about this movie in the slightest.

  23. Mr. Blonde says:

    Horrible news…

  24. RMags says:

i dont get it…i loved death proof. i think it is a great original movie. planet terror is kinda crappy.

  25. DEATH PROOF WASNT THAT BAD
planet terror was amazing but had the same gag throughout the whole movie
    death proof had different jokes

  26. WHAT ABOUT THE TRAILERS?

  27. Ben says:

Nooooo! I am one pissed of Australian, I’ve been looking forward to this for months, f*ck!

  28. Ross says:

Yes I can see there side of it and yes if it was my money on the line I would want to try something to at least make some of the moeny back BUT they should recognize as Phil Gee pointed out that there are a lot of Tarantino and Rodriguez fans out there who this will and has let down massively. I have this at my NUMBER 1 most anticipated movie, probably EVER (for seeing a film in the theatres that is) and now THIS has happened. I still will go and see the both of them, does anyone know if they will be released on the same date?

  29. RMags says:

doesnt it make sense though that they split the movies in foreign countries, grindhouse only existed in america…nowhere else had grindhouse theaters so they wont get the concept.

  30. Gruff says:

I’m not sure who’s been checking rotten tomatoes recently, but the review of grindhouse is pretty good…

  31. Chris says:

Man, that sucks, I’m in the UK and both films together with the trailers was the whole experience, Why not just do them both together. Don’t they remember “The Shawshank Redemption” or “Fight Club” these movies did crap at the box office but are now both the most sold and rented DVD’s to date. They should at least give the double-bill a shot.
