Gerard Butler to Star in Watchmen

Right now, if you mention Gerard Butler and Zack Snyder together, your mouth start drooling at the anticipation for 300 (coming out this week). But it looks like the pair could be reunited again for another highly anticipated project. Watchmen.

Watchmen has been an interesting story to watch over the last year or so. It’s been on again/off again for a while and just recently finally seemed to get settled. But the other interesting aspect is the reaction of the fans of Watchmen. Obviously lots of them are excited as hell to see this thing brought to the big screen. But at the same time, I’ve heard from a LOT of Watchmen fans that they don’t want to see it. They don’t feel a contemporary film can do the story justice. They’re afraid that the nuances of the story won’t appeal enough to a broad audience and thus the studios will change it too much in oder to get that bigger audience.

Well, all I can say is that if 300 knocks it out of the park like many are expecting it will… all those fears could be laid to rest with Zach Snyder at the helm… and now word is Zack is going to be brining along his 300 lead performer, Gerard Butler with him for the ride. The good folks over at MovieHole give us this:

Snyder has already slotted in Butler to the movie – based on the graphic novel about some ragtag former crime-fighters who are drawn back into action by the murder of a former teammate, The Comedian, which turns out to be the leading edge of a much wider, more disturbing conspiracy – but is tight lipped on what role he’d be playing.

There is already a lot of speculation that he might play Ozymandias. Personally I don’t see it myself, but you never know.

So what do you think? Do you think Watchmen can really and properly be adapted to a big screen version?

  1. Is it just me or has Gerard Butler been seriously overlooked as “The Sexiest Man Alive”? Any chance they’ll let him wear the leather Speedo from 300 in Watchman?

I am unfamilar with the original material but if G.B. is in it, I’m for it, 100%.

  2. I’m one of those Watchmen Fans that just can’t see an adaptation to film working. The story is just too…big? I can’t really put it into words. Now, I can see it as a mini-series, a la Band of Brothers, on HBO. That way they could even include the little stories at the end of each chapter as mini-films at the end.

Only a series could do it justice – a movie will be tough.

  3. I think Watchmen can be done…but it will be difficult. It is a much more complex story than 300 with more critical characters. But I have hopes it can be done. It will be important to stick close to the story to have the right impact…not some adaptation version.

  4. I just read a description of Watchmen on Wikipedia. Now, I’m not familiar with this, but it sort of sounds like that M Night Shamhammer movie Unbreakble mixed with The Incredibles. Is that accurate?

  5. With his newly honed buffness, I reckon Gerry Butler’s gotta be a pretty good bet for Jon Osterman, to be then followed by his god-like transformation into… Dr Manhattan.

And while we’re on the subject –

Cast DOUG HUTCHISON as RORSCHACH in the WATCHMEN movie!

  6. Watchmen can make a kick-butt movie adaptation, but general audiences could reject the look of the characters’ psuedo-Golden Age origins. The costumes/origins could make for a cheesy factor and cause the movie to bomb, which would break this fangirl’s heart.

  7. Ahh gotcha.

I see why it would help more in general, but I still think people will have reservations because of the vastly different style. They might just think “Of Snyder can do Miller style hyper-visual action, but can’t handle the subtle nuances of Moore’s writing”

Or some shit like that :)

  8. Hey there Ryan,

I think you misunderstood me a little. The reason it may make people feel better about it is because (if 300 is pulled off really well) it speaks to how well Snyder is able to take printed graphic Novel material and adapt it to the big screen. That’s all I meant.

    Cheers!

  9. I think the Watchmen CAN be done as a film.

That said I don’t think if 300 does well that it’ll make ANYONE more confident that the Watchmen can be. They’re vastly different kinds of stories and the Watchmen is a much much much deeper and more nuanced story than anything Frank Miller has ever done.

It’s like saying that the super hero comic book movies opened the door for things like Ghost World or History of Violence.
