George Lucas Talks Star Wars TV Projects

With the Indiana Jones 4 project ALLEGEDLY starting production in the next couple of months (sorry, I still can’t allow myself to believe it… heart broken too many times), George Lucas has been doing some talking about the upcoming Star Wars TV projects. And to me (the single biggest Star Wars fan and geek in the universe) they sound lame.

ComingSoon reports the following:

TheForce.net received word from the Directors Guild of America where George Lucas was a guest speaker. The “Star Wars” creator talked about Lucasfilm’s upcoming projects. Here’s a clip:

He’s very excited about the animated 3D Clone Wars TV series. He is trying to recreate the ambiance of a SW film in cartoon form – “there won’t be anything on TV like it” – it’ll be “smart ass comedy with contemporary humor.” It won’t be dealing with the Skywalker story. The emphasis is on freedom to portray anything they feel like; for instance some episodes are just about clonetroopers, another features as the main character Kit Fisto. He’s going to make 100 episodes, doesn’t have a network yet.

The live action series is still a few years away, no character decisions have been cast in stone. He did say that each show will be a different character.

IESB.net also got a chance to talk to Lucas and he revealed more about the animated show:

He tells us about a new character we will see in the upcoming animated series that takes place during the Clone wars. Her name is Osoka (this is a phonetic spelling, after all, with Lucas and his spelling magic it will probably be Osaakua or something like that), she is a young Padawan learner, it’s her first assignment and she’s very young. she’s a little Togruta, the same species as Shaak Ti from Episodes II and III.

The Clone Wars animated show was pretty decent, but none of what I read above gives me any kind of hope for the projects. One shot stories instead of an episodic storyline? Another little damn kid a padawan???? Haven’t we tried that already? Oh yeah… and it FAILED! Why go back to that?.

I don’t know… maybe it’s just me. Do you guys thing this stuff has a shot?

  1. true ramenjunkie, im pretty pissed cuz i wanted to get into heroes but everytime i watch it i have no fuckin clue of whats goin on. give me a show with an overall theme and have individual stories happen within that theme. i dont want to have to see an episode from 2 weeks ago to know whats happeding today.

    peace…

  2. Why does a series HAVE to have a continuous plot. Frankly I’d love more shows that don’t have a continuous plot. I’ve more or less stopped watching TV because

I hate scheduling my life around when shows air…
    Networks keep moving shows…
If I miss one episode I end up lost…

Now, maybe some sort of subtle underplot that is continuous but doesn’t always occur nor is ever the main focus of the storyline like say, Veronic Mars (one of the few shows I try to watch these days) might be ok.

  3. I don’t get way Lucas keeps going back to the prequels, maybe he feels safe there, like he doesn’t want to take any risks with after the prequels.

  4. Lucas will almost CERTAINLY disappoint me no matter what he decides to do. After reading many of the Star Wars novels out there I think it may be time for him to let someone else try a SW project and maybe give the fans who grew up with it something they want.

  5. ….or at least give me a series about the rise of the empire….vador and his men taking over the galaxy…come on, there are a ton of potential great star wars stories out there….the game star wars battlefront 2 told a great story about a clone unit that worked directly under vador from the time when vadar attacked the jedi temple….think lucas…think!

    peace….

  6. come on lucas, enough with this kiddie crap. clone wars was the best thing to come from the prequels. give me a new stars wars with an older pissed of luke skywalker trying to bring back the jedi and facing opposition from the government and hidden sith. the guy who made clone wars made samurai jack and that was full of mature ass-kicking shit.

the prequel story universe (the clone wars) isn’t that interesting. you failed in making the prequels so give it up. shit, i’m not even a nerd and lucas is really pissin me off.

    peace…

  7. Anthology series are a tough sell – and tougher to retain viewership week to week. Not to mention if he *gets* a network, 100 shows is a dumb move. No network, not even a cable network, will commit to that.

Lucas should propose 13-22 eps to start and then if ratings are good and the network is hungry for more, THEN make more. Does Lucas think he is above the criteria given to other TV producers?

  8. Why is it that George refuses to tell or show the story we all want to see? I want so badly to see Darth Vader hunting down Jedi and remnants of the republic. Alas, I guess Ill never see it though.

  9. Im all up for a TV series. New characters, same world. But it has to be an ongoing storyline. There are some GREAT writers out there that just make watching TV worth it. They need to get some of these guys on board and make a Star Wars show.

Different character every episode? Sounds a little more like Outter Limits or Tales from the Cantina to me. I can’t see myself staying interested despite being a Star Wars show.
