George Takei on Heroes

John has his Battlestar Galactica to geek out to, I have my Heroes. This show isnt really movie news related, but it talks about a couple guys who have been in movies, and damn its just such a GOOD show. And it just keeps getting better! George Takei has been introduced as the father of one of the primary characters of the show, Hiro.
Coming Soon.net has a short interview with George Takei:
“Heroes” has been getting a lot of talk lately because of its great cast and Golden Globe nomination this year. The news keeps getting better. The distinguished and talented actor, George Takei, who played Sulu on the classic “Star Trek,” has come aboard this season as Hiro’s father, Kaito. His character portrays a very powerful industrialist with multi-faceted sides to his personality. Now, viewers have another good reason to turn on their TV sets to see the ever popular show on Monday nights.Takei became familiar with “Heroes” after receiving e-mails from fans telling him about the series and the Japanese character, Hiro, who is played by Masi Oka. Soon afterward, Takei was contacted by his agent with the news that there had been considerable interest in him auditioning for the part of Hiro’s father. It was an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. One of the requirements was that the actor had to translate the script and perform his audition in Japanese. Although born in California, he learned Japanese at an early age.
The addition of George Takei has been so well executed. I knew he was being introduced on the show, but when it actually happened I didnt see it coming. That happens a lot on this show, but in a good way.
Hiro makes many popculture references throughout the show from XMen comics to Star Trek episodes. Takei ties together this geekdom. Masi Oka (Hiro) was truly a geek before even being on this show, and must be a treat for him as well to work with Takei.
In the recent episode (not a spoiler) the limo Takei is escorted in has a license plate that reads NCC-1701 which Trek fans know is the call letters for the Original Series Enterprise. And in the teaser trailer for next week someone actually calls him Sulu.
Also, one of the new characters introduced is played my Christopher Eccleston (Dr Who, 28 Days Later)

I started watching because I think Ali Larter is smokin’.
When news of Christopher Eccleston joined up (as a bad guy?) it gave me more incentive. I still watch Dr.Who…but ‘Heroes’ is great stuff. Little surprised, Rodney, that you didn’t mention Stan “The Man” Lee will have a brief role as a bus driver on the Feb. 19h ep.
This show is like an awesome-crap show. Where-as Battlestar is more of a crap-awesome show. Its like gourmet trash. At least, that’s what I think.
Oliver, please pass around and share some of that shit you are smoking.
Why certainly, *passes*.
Oliver, as much as you are entitled to your opinion, its like having an opinion about my wife. Anything you say about my favourite show is going to be greeted like a slight against me. Especially THAT show.
John feels the same about BSG.
Don’t be surprised when guys dressed all in black with thick New York Italian accents show up at your door to have a “talk”
Darren, I didnt comment on it because I was unaware that was happenning. I am careful what I read about Heroes for fear of spoilers, so I might have missed it.
Masi Oka was an effects artist for ILM before he found his way to this role. He is my favourite character on the show. All that geekiness he just swims in is real. This guy idolizes people like Stan Lee and Takei. And now he gets to have them on HIS show.
What a dream come true.
So Rodney, how long have you owned Mr. Eccleston? just curious.
Nord
Nord, I dont get what you are implying at all.
I never claimed to have “owned” anyone.
The first few episodes of Heroes were pretty dull but then
*SPOILER*
Claire wakes up with her chest cracked open on the medical examiners after they assume she’s died.
*END SPOILER*
THAT was when I started paying real attention. After that it genuinly becomes must watch TV.
“Also, one of the new characters introduced is played my Christopher Eccleston (Dr Who, 28 Days Later)”
Yes you did Rodney.
Though, I think the show is really quite intriguing, I find that the acting is high school drama level at best.
For example:
Ali Larter (with her disconnected storyline) trying to portray two completely different characters using the same facial expression over and over.
Peter Petrelli looks like Little Nicky half the time, but with half the acting chops.
The guy who plays Sylar is just plain bad – nuff said.
I have tried to start watching this show but its on at the same time as 24, and I cant stop watching that show. Ill pick up the dvds when it comes out though.
I don’t know, I watched every episode of “Heroes” so far and I really want to love it, but somehow it hasn’t really hooked me (yet).
Some actors are pretty bad in my opinion, Ali Larters kid for example or that Indian dude and some of the powers are also pretty idiotic.
Having a good and an evil side, what a super-power is that? Or bending space and time, that seems much too powerful. I still prefer the “shooting laser beams” or “flying” kind of super-power. I will keep watching but I hope the series stops teasing us soon and shows us some actual mutant vs mutant action. Because thats want I want to see in a series like that.
Oh, and am I the only one who thinks the music and the narration just plain sucks? That Hindu-Sing-Sang is so annoying and the voice-over just unneccessary.
Mozzerino…oh man, I totally forgot about the narration. That’s the absolute worst. I’ve taken to just hitting mute when that guy starts talking…
Rodney I’m with you – I was pretty excited the last two weeks seeing George Takei on the show.
I love this show it’s so much fun even if some of the acting is a little below par.
I am stumped. I re-watched the trailer for next week, and that trailer did not even have George Takei in it, so who calls him Sulu?
“Having a good and an evil side, what a super-power is that?”
Its an awesome superpower when the evil side is the one with the powers. Its called a story. Some shows have those.
And bending space and time IS too powerful. Thats the point. A person with a good soul has that power and he truely tries not to abuse it. He is always aware of that.
Clearly this isnt enough spandex and xmen for you, so you think its a bad show. The powers are not idiotic. They just are. These people didnt get to choose their powers. So what if there is no FX super brawl of powerful “mutants” Why does it always have to be that?
The show is a wonderful story and it keeps me interested without people spitting beams from their head, or getting into cataclysmic battle royales every week.
Its genius.
Don’t patronize m Rodney.
What exactly is genius about this show? Where is the wonderful story? Must have missed it somehow, everything so far has been pretty average and by the numbers.
You know what would really suprise me? If Petrelli actually would cause an explosion and destroy New York. That would create an immensly interesting scenario. But we all know that’s not going to happen.
The Cheerleader and her real parents – thing so far also lacks any kind of surprise. When is the storyline going to get interesting? Not to mention that the revelation of Sylar was a dissapointment to say the least.
But my main problem is the characterization. I just don’t think any of the characters in the show are interesting, there’s nobody I really root for. Hiro maybe, but he is just too nice and too idealistic.
The story is that these are real people with real unexpected powers and how they deal with this. Some have a mission, some have no power and are exploiting it, some are just focused on trying to cope with it, some are hiding it altogether. These are people and this is their story.
You still lean to the idea that its not “interesting” unless something cataclysmic happens and they have to throw down. Not every superhero story has to have costumed crusaders using their powers against each other. This is the real world and how it would be if people suddenly started cropping up with powers.
