Early 300 Reviews

By John Campea - February 23, 2007 - 11:10 America/Montreal

After The Transformers, there is no single film I’ve been looking forward to more this year than 300. All I’m going to say is that you should be excited… be very very excited! Right now some early reviews are coming in. As of this moment, 300 is sitting with a 100% on Rotttentomatoes. Take that with the grain of salt that when I checked there were only 8 reviews up… but amongst them are some big ones.

Here is what is being said by some of the critics in their 300 reviews:

“A blustery, bombastic, visually arresting account of the Battle of Thermopylae as channeled through the rabid imagination of graphic novelist Frank Miller.”

Todd McCarthy – Variety

“Frank Miller’s graphic novel about an ancient Greek battle comes to vivid life.”

Kirk Honeycutt – Hollywood Reporter

“Snyder perfectly captures the look and feel of Miller’s original work with a movie that’s fun, exciting and sick without ever losing sight of the story or characters.”

Edward Douglas – ComingSoon.net

“Director Zack Snyder adapts Frank Miller’s graphic novel with passion and creativity, proving that classical storytelling will never go out of style.”

Todd Gilchrist – IGN Movies

All I’m going to say at this point is that the hype is justified. 100% justified. 300 opens wide in just a couple of weeks.

This movie looks badass

  2. Jay says:

In the words of the immortal Vanilla Ice,

    “Word to your mother”

Not that I care what critics think or anything because I was eagerly anticipating this film before a single frame was shot.
But now that I’ve actually seen some of the visuals and some of the finished product I KNOW this movie is going to be brutally awesome.

    Sadly,
Alfie thinks THIS movie is going to be stupid too.
Frank Miller Himself said the movie looks fantastic and is exactly how he pictured it in his head when he was writitng it, but Alfie thinks it will be stupid.
Ah well… what does the creator know?
(Relax. I’m not saying you should like it just because Miller does. I’m just making an observation)

Anyway, to each their own, because I cant wait for this to come out.

  3. Ross says:

I have heard A LOT of positive things about this film but the review I read in Empire Magazine surprised me, it wasn’t that positive of a review. Check out the overview they gave it:

“Visually stunning, thoroughly belligerent and as shallow as a pygmy’s paddling pool, this is a whole heap of style tinged with just a smidgen of substance. — *** 3 Stars

Now THAT was a downer to read…

  4. Viddy says:

And Jay’s eternal crush on Alfie continues…….

  5. tedward says:

“All I’m going to say at this point is that the hype is justified. 100% justified.”

So John, you’ve already seen it? You bastard!!!

  6. Marina says:

When I read the initial reviews coming out of the BFF, I was surprised at the talk of boos. Again, this was ONE screening but still. In all honesty, I’d see this even if the reviews were bad. Visually at least, it looks too good to pass up so it’s nice to see that there’s more to it than just good looks.

  7. Viddy says:

The movie looks awesome as hell, I can’t wait to see it myself. Will it live up to the hype? I think it will.

  8. Jay says:

Are you talking about the Berlin Film Festival?

I read reports of clapping during the movie and standing ovations at the end.

  9. ISO100 says:

Sneak preview in Toronto on Moday Campea. You gonna be there? Cuz I know I am…

    Woo!!

  10. Ian Smith says:

Empire have got it wrong. Heck they give 300 three stars and then the weak, self-indulgent, joke-free “Hot Fuzz” (it’s no Shaun of the Dead) four stars??!!!!

I had little interest in 300 but got a ticket for a free preview. In some ways Empire have got it right in that there isn’t a lot of story or characterisation here (although more than I expected to be honest), but visually and sonically it totally blew me away. One of the most amazing films I’ve seen in a long time.

If you read the Empire review it has a lot of good things to say, it’s just the star rating is a bit low. I think they got it wrong. Hopefully you will too!

  11. Eaglewing says:

Lately, as much as I love movies, I find it harder and harder to endure the dreadful ‘theatre experience’ to see one. However, I will definately be there for 300. My number one anticipated movie of the year.

  12. alfie says:

jay jay jay……must we continue our merry dance on this film to….

    Yeah you are correct.

I think this film looks fucking ridiculous….

The trailers are hilarious…. ..all that hammy acting ..the fucking lead guy screaming every line “this is SPARTA..we are SPARTANS”…SPARTA SPARTA SPARTA”

but I do love millers work – and I fucking loved snyders dawn of the dead so I am willing to give this film the slightest bit of benefit of the doubt but the trailer to me looked fucking jawdroppingly stupid.

I haven’t seen the film but looks at what empire says..they are pretty much saying it is style of substance – look at the trailer…you are dealing with a hyper stylised film so of course the visuals are going to overwhelm and drown out a lot of the narrative and storytelling….this is a film about the visuals so if the trailer blew you away you are more than likely going to love the film…..I think it almost looks monty pythonish in its stupidity

  13. during my lunch hour i went to suncoast movie store and bought a leonidas action figure. he’s gonna rule my shelves!!!

  14. Jay says:

    No,
I dont want to get into it over this one too.

I’m still pretty tired from the Transformers debate.

    Regardless,
You are right about one thing, this movie is about the visuals.
The story is a simple one. It’s an impressionistic take on a simple story. People defending their right to be free and not under someone else’s rule. And the story is being told to a group of warriors by another warrior so that explains the hyper-reality of it. I think it all makes perfect sense for the manner in which the story takes place. I love the look and I love what I’ve seen of the actors take on the characters. Cant wait, it should be a heck of a ride.

  15. Jay says:

I usually dont pay any attention to reviews.
I may read a few but they have no effect on me.
I judge the films for myself, I dont let others do it for me.

  16. Alex says:

    IGN gave it a 5 out 5

  17. chris says:

this looks better than sin city in my opinion, cool concept, cool action, cool lines (”our arrows will block out the sun….then we will fight in the shade,” sweet) and fuckin rated R lord of the rings battles, what more can you want.

    peace…

  18. Kaneda979 says:

    2 WEEKS FROM TODAY! YYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!:D

  19. Kaneda979 says:

Oh, they’re is some awsome clips from the film on IGN.com. 9 total if ya’ll wanna check’em out. The movie has awsome dialog, so cool action scenes in there too. GOD I CAN’T WAIT FOR HITS MOVIE!

  20. alfie says:

ign gave it a good review??

well if the site that has been the exclusive rights to post footage for it says its good then it must be!! ;P

in all honesty visually the film appeals but that nitwit shouting all over it ruined it for me…as did the “alt” rock soundtrack….

Nothing ruins a period film for me more than having modern music…..

  21. Vincent says:

300 was amazing. Just saw it this past week and I have to say that every frame of film was like a painting from the brush of Frank Miller. Great costumes, amazing action, great effects and it even has good acting. Only set back for most theatres is that it will be rated 18A.
I can tell you this is one film you have to see on the biggest screen possible. When it does come out on DVD you will definitely be buying it.
    Count the days.

  22. Kristina says:

I’m scared that my hopes are getting TOO high. The positive reviews are a great sign, but I don’t want to get swept away by the hype and be let down. I hope it rocks my socks, though.

  23. SPADE says:

this movie reminded me of GOd of War if any of you have played this game that one and Prince of Persia so in my oppinion i think this movie is going to be one of the /Best this year !! cuz really i havent seen a good movie in a really long time ..some exceptions ..

  24. Nick says:

I don’t think I have ever been more excited to see a movie before it came out in my life, just a few days away….

  25. KY says:

    The show rocks !!!!!!!!

  26. RealHistory says:

Let’s make one thing clear. The movie looks awesome. The visuals are amazing. But let’s make another thing clear. This is a pretty good attempt by Frank Miller to convince historically challenged dim wits into thinking that this was actual history. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is absolutely no concrete evidence that any of this or any other Greek victory over Persians ever happened. Most of it was cooked up by white supramist Germans in the early 1900’s. Actually Spartans were a barbarian race and ardent homosexuals and Pedophiles to boot. That’s right Pedophiles. What do you think they did to the seven year old boys they took to boot camp? Teach them only to fight? Yeah right. No surprises why they cared about each other so much. So after watching the movie I wouldn’t walk around calling my self a Spartan.

  27. Sean says:

Just saw it!!! If you can, see this in theaters. I saw it on an IMAX screen and it blew me away. One word: Awesome. I will most certainly be reserving a spot on my shelf for it. Initially, I was trepidatious as I am a huge lover of history, and was hoping that they wouldn’t make it too over the top. However, using the history as a framework, and THEN taking it over the top works almost magically. I too was so hopeful that I was afraid my expectations were too high. To say that this movie lived up to them would be a gigantic understatement. In short, SEE THIS MOVIE.

  28. Sean says:

Oh, by the way realhistory, apparently you fall into the category of historical dimwit. Mainly, because if you bother to pick up any book or documentary concerning Spartans or great battles that changed the world, you will note that everyone of them mention this battle. Also, the Greeks defeated the Persian Navy at the battle of Salamis and the remaining infantry at the battle of Plataea. While it is true that they were homosexuals (They felt men were much more likely to die alongside there lovers, there is no proof whatsoever that they were pedophiles. This is not German white supremacy propaganda. These events are historical fact. While certainly embellished (in truth, estimates have it at 300 Spartans, and around 8000 other Greeks, against a Persian army numbering at about 250,000), This is not some conspiracy. Maybe you should read up on history yourself, jackass.

  29. Sean says:

Oh, I almost forgot. Let us not forget the Ionian Revolt which led to the battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. But, I guess that’s just another conspiracy theory.

  30. Christopher Ekpo says:

I saw this movie last night………….. TROY aint got shit on this movie. “300″ is the best war movie I have seen in my LIFE. This movie is going to win every category. I am seeing this movie again tonight. If you are a competitor by nature, this movie will amp you up because you will have no choice but to live by “SPARTAN LAW”.

  31. Matt says:

Besides the fact that Herodotus wrote about the events at Thermopylae long before “white supremacist Germans” existed, not to mention before Germans period truly existed as a people. Explain to me how these events are a conspiracy theory? Or perhaps you also believe that Alexander never conquered Persia either. You’re retarded.

  32. Sam says:

Saw 300 last night and I think it lived up to the hype. The action and cinematics were 1st rate. The heroic speeches were in the style you would expect from a broadway drama (which I also happen to like). While I am a history buff and there is several misconceptions in the movie, I do think they caught the spirit of this great battle – from the action that must of taken place, to the morale of the Spartans and to the martial prowness that took place in the battle.

For those who enjoyed the battle sequences in Troy – this movie has got it beat and really rose the bar for this type of film. I will probably see it again while it is in theaters and plan on buying the DVD once it comes out.

In another note on this film, the soundtrack was perfect. Music in the theater is supposed to move you emotionally in the direction that the movie is going, the soundtrack here does that. If, 300 wins any awards at upcoming shows, I expect best soundtrack to be amongst them.

Anyway, the hype is honest. Yes, there is a couple cheesy theaterical moments in the movie, but I don’t say this to be critical. It adds to the flavor of the movie and takes what was one of the best military battles in history and puts you in front row center. I put it this way, Troy bumped Gladiator out of my personal top 10, 300 here just bumped Troy.

RealHistory you are a jackass lol.
Go watch BrokeBack Mountain you brown diaper you.
I caught the early showing of 300 on the 8th and usually when i have high expectations of a movie im usually not that impressed when i finally see it.
Not this movie though. It was everything i expected to be and more.
I saw it once with my buddies and now im taking my wife to see it.
Its going to be the best movie of the year.

  34. Tracye says:

    Just saw the movie!!!!

My local radio am drive jocks hyped the movie so much! They even spoke with Gerald Butler (King) and David Wenham (Dilios) on their show this week. Then I saw Rodrigo Santoro on Good Morning America this week. After that, I just had to see it.

This type of film is not my usual, but was very curious. And I must say…It was compelling and excellent. I came home to research all I could on this epic battle.

And it is a great feat as I was one of only a handful of females in the theater. BTW, I was impressed with portrayal the only female character. She was by no means a victim even though she was violated.

Excellent film and I hopw that HOLLYWOOD recognizes this.
