Rob Cohen to direct The Mummy Three

rob.jpgSo The Mummy 3 is coming, slowly but surely and now it will be driven by The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen. The people over at moviehole.net gave us this

:According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cohen will direct, Stephen Sommers (director of the first two films) will produce, and Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are writing the script – or rather, have written the script.

Though the trade says “the plot details of the script….are being kept under wraps”, earlier rumours suggest it tells the story of Alex O’Connell, the son of Rick O’Connell (played by Brendan Fraser in the first two), who himself now has to do battle with a Mummy.

I’ve written a few articles now on the Mummy Three, you can see them here and here.

I do not think that Cohen will add much to this movie, he may help out a bit with pacing but it seems just completely past it’s prime. Unless The Mummy Three is a shockingly spectacular movie and word of mouth get out big time…. I think this will be the kind of movie that most people will see willingly only when it is the in flight movie ad they want to ignore the person beside them.

There is, of course the chance that this film will fair alright. It will depend largely on the timing of the release, and the series definitely has it’s fans, that will probably get it through the first few weekends. But do most people want to see a third installation? When Rachel Weisz isn’t sure she wants take part? Doesn’t seem too likely.

I love Brendan Fraser and he’s great in whatever role he is given but he is just not enough to come out for in this movie.

I think that after opening weekend for The Mummy Three the box office will be like a desert.

  1. If Rachael Weisz isn’t in the movie, then it isn’t a Mummy movie in my way of thinking. She’s the BEST!

I love the first two movies and can’t believe she’s not there. What a shame!

  2. whats the difference between sommers and choen?

cohen may make bad films but there is nothing in his filmography anywhere near as bad as van helsing…which is probably at number 2 on my worst films of all time list….

  3. Rob Cohen …I, uh, liked “Dragon : The Bruce Lee Story”, even if a third of the bio-pic was total bullshit that panders to the conspiracy theories. But I liked the film. The fight scenes were nice and I loved the Randy Edelman score.

See? I can say something positive about the director.

Would he be okay with the Mummy franchise? Well, he has helmed a fantasy type film before (Dragonheart) …and he would need to rebound from that stench from last year (Stealth). Just as long as he goes in a different direction than Sommers, who seemed to do four things in Van Helsing and the Mummy films which I despised:

*Over-using special effects in areas which defy the story logic and/or set rules within story context.

    *Repeated FX gags ad nauseum

*Characters who are self aware/hard to take seriously, thus not taking a threat seriously.

    * Wasting acting talent/not getting the best performances out of the actors/not using actors fully etc.

Side note: No one gave Rob Bowman a call, eh?

  4. I think Cohen’s sesibilities would fit right into the Mummy franchise.
    Pointless, popcorn, fluff.

Dont get me wrong, I liked the first Mummuy and the 2nd was fun but…

Alfie, if you want to know who I look at the way you look at Michael Bay… well, here he is. The difference is, I can watch a Rob Cohen movie and still have fun. He makes mindless drivel, but I still enjoy it for the 2 hours I’m in the theatre.

    So, yeah…
Cohen would be OK for the Mummy franchise.

  5. “It’s a proven money-maker that shouldn’t be held hostage to Rachael Weisz’s constant kvetching, which she’s been doing since 2002. Obviously she’s holding out for more money and will hold her breath til she gets it.”

Spare me the whole holding out for more money bit because for one she should, Brendan did not make those films successful alone and she deserves to be paid just as well as he is. And second, The Mummy Returns was not very good to begin with and you can’t blame Rachel Weisz for being hesitant in coming back for a 3rd film. With what i read about the new movie, i will not blame her at all for not coming back.

There is a time when you have to know when to walk away and i think this is the time to do it.

  6. They may not be great films, but Fast and furious, xxx etc… are all very watchable imo, they dont have much rerun value – but I enjoyed them at the time.

Mummy films have all been enjoyable to watch, but the thought of a third dosent bring me any feeling.

Maybe its because I’m a little older, and they are kids films tbh.

Wont see in to the cinema ( hes says quitely …. i did see Scorpian king there >.> ), but I’d watch it on Cable.

  7. “Shockingly Spectacular Movie” and “Rob Cohen” do not belong in the same sentence.
Normally I like to go into my opinions and explain myself so I’m not a horn-blowing ranter – however, Rob deserves it on every turn. He flawlessly releases glossed over, brain-dead films that defy logic by somehow getting made. And for some insane reason, people attend these films made by the same guy who launched the Fast and the Furious, XXX, Stealth, brought the stupid dog back to life in Daylight and dumb-humped my brain into a coma with “The Skulls” – thinking that somehow, this time, it will be entertaining. UGH.
    Just kill me.

  8. How many hundreds of millions has this franchise brought in to date? 6 hundred mil worldwide or so. Personally I think Rob’s the right guy to do it, he has similar sensibilities to Sommers, though the Mummy felt more credible than Fast and the Furious.
Revamping the franchise is a good idea. Sommers (one of my favorite movie-makers) made a great franchise. Some folks complain about Sommer’s script writing and call the Mummy movies “stupid” but I have to wonder, what the hell their problem with the story was? What elements did they want to see which were missing? None. How could it have been made “smarter?” They can’t say. Instead they bitch about “how it was handled.” A hard “R” film would have been a straight horror movie and clearly the studios wanted broader appeal than that -hence a different approach. Sommers struck a perfect balance of horror and humor -not easy to do and his critics wouldn’t have been able to do it at all! I loved both the Mummy films. It’s a proven money-maker that shouldn’t be held hostage to Rachael Weisz’s constant kvetching, which she’s been doing since 2002. Obviously she’s holding out for more money and will hold her breath til she gets it. Time to restart the series with a new lead and avoid all that. Hopefully a strong enough script will be turned in that Rob won’t mess up…too badly.

  9. stephen sommers never recovered from van helsing huh

the mummy movies have been ok movies…rob cohen should do alright, it’d be a shame if he made the first bad mummy movie

oh well at least we’ll get an elaborate digital end credit sequence
