Departed wins Best Picture

The critics are calling it now. These movies have been receiving so much acclaim its not a surprise that the critics are pegging them for the winner, but Departed seems to be at the front of the pack for Oscar night after winning Best Picture in Chicago.

Yahoo News says:

The capital of the Midwest has spoken:
Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” nabbed best picture, director and adapted screenplay honors from the Chicago Film Critics Assn. Thursday.

Helen Mirren (“The Queen”) and Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”) also continued their royal flush of lead actor awards from critics groups nationwide.

So with the Oscars just around the corner, what movie do YOU think will take top billing?

This movie starts out in the 60’s…then suddenly they have cell phones! Did I miss something or did they make a big boo boo?

  2. So remakes, and movies based on books, tv shows, radio shows? Those should all be disqualified for any awards too?

Its a little naive to say that just because its a remake of another film that its actors cannot be recognized for how well they did their jobs.

  3. Departed should win Oscars, Golden Globes, and anything else that might actually matter.
United 93 is not a movie. It’s a propoganda film to tug at the heartstrings of people who don’t need to relive this just yet. Put it out in 20 years.
Pan’s Labyrinth is a tough one. Possible unintelligible to the idiot film moving going public (hey let’s go watch tha piece of terrible teerrible trash and possibly the worst movie of all time Pirates of the Carribean 2 anoth watch) but it can be in the top 5 and who knows can possibly take some praise away from The Departed. Martin Scorsese must win an Oscar for this movie. It should be the law.

Also cared about Letters fro Iwo Jima 9Clint’s “good” movie and he’s already beat out scorsese once or at least he’s the type of actor/director that always makes life rough for scorsese (Redford/Ordinary People,, Kostner/Dances with Wolves and I think Mel Gibson/Braveheart all 1st time directors all beat Martin)

Childrran of Ma-didn’t see it but who knows-it’s getting good press. And god help me if anything associated with Dreamgirls beats out anything associated with Departed. I don’t agree with Musicals in the same category and especially not Dreamgirls-a one song musical at best.

  4. mmm, tricky title for your post.
Also WINNING BEST PICTURE on diferent festivals this year:

    Santa Fe Film Festival
    “Pans Labyrinth”
    New York Film Critics Circle
    “United 93”
    San Francisco Film Critics Circle
    “Children of man”
Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards
    “Letters from Iwo Jima”

And there are so many fdiferent ilms that been receiving so much acclaim more or the same as The Departed, if you really made your home work, there’s not a clear favorite for this year Oscars.

  5. Infernal Affairs is hardly the first Asian film to be remade for the North American market. There will be more.

Lord of the Rings was remade from a cartoon which was based on a book by some guy named Tolkien. Who remembers the animated LoTR?? Should we discard them as unworthy of honourable awards because it wasn’t “original”?

Departed is an incredible film. And it is being recognized as such, regardless as to who did it first in what nation.

  6. This movie simply don’t deserve this honors!

It is just a copy of 2002’s “Mou gaan dou” (Infernal Affairs: English title). The same screenplay. The same characters. In some scenes even the same camera shots are used…
Deptarted is a remake with american actors… nothing more; and who remembers Internal Affairs?
