Bryan Singer To Direct Wolverine? Don’t Count On It

There has been a lot of buzz floating around (for good reason) that Bryan Singer is the director of choice for the new Wolverine movie. To most X-Men fans this is like Jenna Jameson showing up on your door step proclaiming that she’s tired of all those rich sexy guys and now wants a man with more “substance” (which is a nice way of saying loser) like you. You get the picture.

No one would like to see Bryan Singer direct Wolverine (or have Jenna show up on my doorstep) more than me. But the reality is, that no matter how much Huge Jackman wants Singer… no matter how much Fox wants Singer… and no matter how interested Singer is in doing it… the fact of the matter is that the schedules just don’t line up in the least. The following is from Coming Soon:

With Hugh hoping to start production of Wolverine first few months of 2008 that would put Bryan in the middle of pre-production of Superman. So unless the Baz Luhrmann project is finished early, which won’t happen, or if Superman or Wolverine start production at a different time, it is safe to say that Bryan Singer will not direct Wolverine.

Fox isn’t about to put Wolverine off for another year, and Singer isn’t about to ditch his baby (Superman). So that’s that. Put those hopes and dreams to rest boys and girls. Singer isn’t directing Wolverine. But then again… this is Hollywood and stranger things have happened I suppose.

  1. Now for X-Men 4 what is it going to be about? I say anyone who can make a good 3 part story line and end the X-Men Franchise for good using Apocolypse and he has enough history to make plenty of good story lines that would take a part 4,5,and 6.

  2. I think superman was a good film but not a great film because like someone said it didn’t not connect with superman 2 but if you guys look at the Donner’s cut it would be more closely connected with that one, but still we are talking superman, to me stopping a robbery was like watching superman 1 I would like to see him fight two villians at once (Brainiac, Bazzoro) he’s superman if he can’t handle that they need to stop here.

  3. I really would love for Bryan to come a direct this. He did such a great job of the first two, and i was gutted to hear that he wasnt doing X3. He really put thought into the characters, and that what made X-Men such a brillaint film. But maybe if he didnt do this film, he may return to do another X-Men film. Lots of rumors around of other spin offs and also X4.. so, fingers crossed

  4. It would be nice to have Singer direct but he is tied up with Superman. I didn’t think that Superman Returns was a great film I thought it was a good picture but no where near great it had to many problems. The film had things that contradicted the first two movies which really were stupid. I mean wouldn’t Louis think she was raped by Superman if he gave her the kiss of forgetfulness? Although it was nice seeing the man of steel in a movie again but they really need to give more lines.

  5. I personally think X-Men 3 was better than the other two, and I hate Ratner so that should tell you what I think about Singer’s directing in all his super hero films. Yes the guy directed one of the greatest film of all time(The Usual Suspect), but in my opinion he hasn’t come close with any of this other films. I want a Wolverine film with a vision, with comic book geekyness oozing from its pores.

I WOULD LOVE FOR THE WACHINSKI BRO’S TO TACKLE HIS TYPE OF SUBJECT.

  6. I thought perhaps they might get Brett Ratner after he’s done messing around with the stinking rich Chris Tucker…hey, don’t gimmie that sad sack look…if Ratner can bring a halfway decent X-Men film in under a year, who is to say he can’t pull it off with Wolverine?

  7. I dont want Singer to direct the Wolverine movie.

I’ve read Hugh Saying he didnt want this to appear to be X-Men 4. He didnt want it to have the same visual signature as the X-Men movies. I completely agree with that, but if Singer directs it will look the same. Singer is a very talented director and I’m anxiously awaiting his Superman Returns sequel but I want some new blood for Wolverine.
I have no idea who that may be but I just dont want Singer to take this on.

I know everyone will probably jump down my throat for this but I loved the look of the Texas Chainsaw remake. Gritty and real but with a certain style to it. I kind of envisioned Wolverine having a similar look and feel. The director’s name was Marcus Nispel. He also directed Pathfinder that’s coming out soon. I like his style.

My point is that I want this to feel like a different movie not just a continuation of the X-Men franchise.

  8. Jeez, Superman did not almost fail. And it was good. Just because you guys can’t appreciate a true film and have to have it loaded with senseless action doesn’t mean Supes was bad. Sure, more would’ve been awesome, but the movie was great. X-men was crap (2 was much better)
    Campea’s right =)

I don’t know about this analogy, John.

“all those rich sexy guys” = the Superman movie that almost failed? Didn’t X-Men outgross it with a smaller budget?

  10. I like Singer but he is not the end all be all of comic book movies. He has his ups, X-men one and two, and his downs, Superman the not so original movie. So having some other talented director taking a crack at wolverine wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

It’s to bad Singer is on the Superman sequel…I would like to have seen someone else take a crack at it. Give it a different spin taking it as far away from Superman the not so original movie, as far as you can get.

But I guess Singer is on his path or vision and I hope it has some originality in it. Singer if you read this, give Donner the rest he deserves, and try something original in the Superman sequel please.

  11. It would be nice to see Singer direct Wolverine, but it’s definitely not the end of the world. There are pleanty of tallented directors out there and I’m sure FOX will grab a good one.
