Bond VS Penguin – Who Will Win The Box Office This Weekend?

This one is tough to call. Casino Royale may be the most anticipated action film of the year. But on the other hand we’ve learned that it’s almost never wise to bet against a family film. So… who will draw the biggest audience this weekend?

  1. Sunday Estimates: Too Close to call. It’s a photo finish on monday, if the studios don’t stack the books in one way or another to be able to put #1 Movie in American on their TV and newspaper ads.

  2. So far, my prediction is pretty spot on. Box office mojo has CR at number one on Friday with almost 15 million, while HF is at number two, not far behind with almost 12 million.

  3. I’m not sure about how to vote for this. On one hand, cartoon flicks make MAD money these days, but every time I turn on the TV, I see Daniel Craig’s fugly mug and no dancing penguins. Where are the commercials hyping this? Does the studio WANT to make money? A lot of movies that have come out and bombed I was totally unaware of because I haven’t seen ONE commercial for them. I didn’t know that Christian Bale movie was out because I haven’t seen him or his co-stars on Leno or Letterman. Didn’t know that Sarah Michelle Gellar box of shit was out yet, either. On the same subject(sorta), went to Wal-Mart today and was shocked to see a King Kong 3-disc DVD sitting on the shelf. I literally had no clue the thing was out already. Not one tv ad for the damn thing. Studios don’t pimp their shit correctly, and then whine when their projects fail. I have no interest in seeing Casino Royale this weekend, but I’ll give the studio credit: I damn sure know it’s opening tomorrow. Can’t say the same for Happy Feet.

Pros for Casino Royale-good buzz, the James Bond name alone brings in fans, big action flick in a somewhat dry market

Cons for CR-No name stars, dissatisfaction over Daniel Craig casting

Pros for Happy Feet-It’s a fucking family cartoon with cute fucking animals

Cons for HF-When the fuck is it released? Tomorrow? Oh……

Casino Royale wins by a narrow margin
    CR-45 million
    HF-38 million

  4. One thing against “Happy Feet” winning may be the option of other family movies this weekend. Bond will have no competition for the older male demographic who haven’t had a decent release in months. (hehehe)

  5. Someone just emailed me a trash email saying i should leave these boards for defending such a crap film and that Robin Williams is a drunk washed up loser who sucks at the box-office. I would politely respond to such eloquent comments that there are three different Robin Williams you need to acknowledge: 1. The family movie Robin, 2. The bearded dramatic Robin, and 3. The non-bearded adult Robin (which we see most often).

If you consider them separate brands, the number one has a pretty nice record since the early 1990’s (this is a selective list of course – feel free to point out the missing few!):

    – Hook – 26 Million dollars (119 total)
    – Aladdin – 38 Million dollars (217 total)
    – Mrs. Doubtfire – 20 Million dollars (219 total)
    – Jumanji – 23 Million dollars (101 total)
    – Flubber – 36 Million dollars (93 total)
    – Robots – 36 Million dollars (128M total)
    – RV – 16 Million dollars (71M total)
    – Happy Feet (looking good!)
    – Night at the Museum (looking even better!)

  6. Let’s not get emotional here. We all know that Casino Royale will be the better movie, and probably it will be much more remembered and respected in the decades to come. Happy Feet opening at Number one does not mean it’s a superior film, but that more people in the society want to see it over the week-end. Broader appeal, bigger cast (Casino’s most recognizeable star is Judi Dench), more theaters, shorter in length which means more showings per day, PG-Rated, etc.

Do not take it personal, we all know Bond is more deserving. But let’s not live in denial, Robin Williams even opened a stinker like Robots at 35M opening week-end and that was in a mid-february period.

  7. I think the Bond fans will push this one over those damn penguins…DAMN THOSE PENGUINS AND THIER HAPPY FEET…especially with the reviews and the fact that Daniel Craig as Bond has really revitalized the character, not to mention that its a new level of gritty Bond.

I think maybe I could have used the word Bond a bit more in that overly long and pretty pointless sentence.

    I’ll try harder next time!

  8. Bond is gonna do awsome im sure of it. This is the first bond ive ever wanted to watch and i believe others feel the same this one will bring in a lot of new fans.

  9. Happy Feet will dominate. Didn’t the summer boxoffice results prove anything to you?

When there’s only 1 good kids movie coming out, it crushes everything in it’s path. Look how good Santa Clause 3 is doing and it’s been universally panned as rubbish.

p.s. I don’t have kids, so I’ll be glad if Bond is not as crowded as it could be… :)

  10. Hey John – Thanks for putting so much attention on this very exciting showdown (i cannot recall many instances when two huge films like this came out on the exact same date). I got really sucked in the whole Casino Royale hype too and it’s really hard for me to vote for Happy Feet here but leaving emotions aside, the penguins will win.

Two very up-to-date Box-office forecast sites also agree:

Good luck with Bond everyone! Talk to you on Monday night when the “too-close-to-call” results are finally sorted out by EDI.
