Jack Black NOT Green Lantern!

Of all the superhero movie news we have been reporting lately, it seems the Green Lantern franchise seems to be the most overlooked iconic character of all. Mostly because news hit last July that Jack Black had been slated to play Hal Jordan. This would be the second time Black played a guy named Hal. But it looks like the Watchers have spoken and Jack Black is losing his Power Ring.

IESB.net Reports:

A dreadful script this site reviewed a few months back totally reinvented the beloved Green Lantern superhero into a bumbling idiot who, with his “Fear Factor-like” tactics, receives the power ring and the battery (lantern) to become the Green Lantern.

I for one am ECSTATIC that they are going in a different direction with this character. Aside from the major trinity of DC Comics (Batman, Superman and WonderWoman) Green Lantern lists among my favourite characters.

But to see Jack Black go all School of Rock with this would just be embarassing. I thought maybe we would see a serious side to Jack Black considering the character, but it was confirmed that they were going for “zany”. I said it in July and I will say it again. Making this movie slapstick and goofy will accomplish one thing. A crappy movie.

It just improved 1000% with this one peice of news.

If you would like to see Jack Black comment on it himself, you can go to this link and click PLAY.

After seeing this video, Id sooner see him play Wonder Woman than Green Lantern.

Now if they want to do PlasticMan and cant afford Jim Carey, call Black.

  1. an idea for a Green Lantern script is to set the time back in the seventies and apopt an more Denny O’Neil Green Lantern. It would be different than most super hero movies which are set in present day settings. Think of the sound track which could have new and old music mix. Just an idea. Oh and Jack Black no thanks but he could bank roll the film.

  2. I meant no ill will Rod. But while the Plastic Man comics were rather light in tone, (aside from when the character was first created) I have to say that Jim Carrey has played The Mask and The Riddler. I can’t see him doing another character based on a comic book. I just can’t.

and as for Jack Black, he would fit the same mold as Lantern. Then again, considering Plas’ costume…

  3. All I can say is… THANK GOD!

This would have resulted in a “Batman & Robin” size fiasco.
It would have been a joke. A parody of itself.

Serious in tone is the only way to go. The GL corps are the protectors of the universe for cripes sake, not a travelling comedy act.

I, too, am rooting for Hal Jordan. Not because of the color of his skin, but because he’s the one I grew up reading.

  4. Darren, all those actors are known for their goofy antics on screen. What makes you opinion better than mine?

Plasticman was the goofball, always cracking jokes and being silly. I dont see how Carrey or Black wouldnt be good for it, but Stiller is?

Stiller would be a good choice, but for the exact same reasons that the others would as well.

  5. This is good news. But Rod, you are so…wrong thinking Black good for Plastic Man, or Jim Carrey for that matter. Ben Stiller?Okay, now that’s okay.

But if ever Warners does an adap of the limited comics series “Breathtaker”, then call Black. He’s The Man.

    :)

  6. What’s wrong with Anthony Anderson? His performance on The Shield earned him much acclaim from critics who had previously dismissed him as a light comedy actor, resulting in him returning to The Shield during the show’s fifth season for several episodes.

  7. Why does GL have to be white? What if they revolve the movie around John Stewart? Its not like DC “changed” the character for TV. The John Stewart character is very much a part of the GL history. Its not a TV gimmick.

  8. Hey i know im a little late but i grew up in a home where i was denyed the privlige of watching such movies as american pie and dude wheres my car? my mom was strict… and im 17

Its funny because when all my firends watched the first one in 1999 they
kep saying i laugh like stiffler and i was like wtf whos stiffler also i aparently act and look like him or so im told but my hairs a bit darker

    1. this is agreeable and i fully understand what your saying man as to the other guy what the hell??? go jump in a lake
you have probaly never had that kind of life

  9. Oh. My. God. I didnt even realize that Black was up for the role. I would have cried. THANK GOD the are scrubbing this ‘version’. I like all Comic Book stuff. My two ABSOLUTE favorites are Green Lantern and The Flash. I loooooong for the day one of these films is made (and made well…)

With GL you have so many “versions” to choose from too… Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, even Guy Gardner… Hell, you could make Kilowog or Salikk or even G’nort the main character. JUST DO NOT MAKE IT “ZANY” and “SLAPSTICKY” (is that even a word? who cares…)

Thank the stars and the heavens and aunt flo that this got scrapped. Nowadays with comic book films, it seems like they either want to make it “Dark and Gritty” or “Lighthearted and slapsticky”. Thats fine if the actual book is dark or slapstick.

I understand and agree that you need to “mainstream” the book for more than just us comic book dorks, but all of the good movies have kept the spirit of that particluar book in tact. At LEAST treat each with RESPECT. Once you lose that, the movie will always suck. Was the Hulk great? IMHO…no. BUT!! You could see the respect that was given, even if you didnt agree with the final ‘vision’ of the film. There was no respect with the 2 Schumacher Batman films, Catwoman, etc and look at those crapo results.

    Oye… (man i is a dork)… enough from me…
